Yes! How long has that been gone?? Life is short. Edit: Just Googled it. It's been closed for EIGHT YEARS.
Bugger - gigged there in the late seventies. Shame.

I have just gone through the singers nightmare. Almost a year of not being able to sing more than one or two songs without my voice cracking up and disappearing if I kept going. MY solution was to give up all dairy products. I will never rip on a singer for using the "sore throat excuse" AGAIN. EVER!

Years ago in the era of rocking with curly leads, the front line of the band decided to "flash it up a bit" and all jump forward off the stage at the same time during a song. Us guitarists both had nice long straight leads, but the bass player had a short curly lead.... Flat on his back on the floor after the lead jerked him up wayyyy short. How we giggled.... Happily both bass and amplifier survived. Bass player was never the same after that though.

He`s dead isnt he? OOPS! For some reason I thought this was a "living drummers" list..... And yep the list is about as useful as most of them are!

Great! Well done you! One thing: Before you start swanning around the world with him, make sure there is at least enough £$£$ to cover you. Got a similar offer years ago and discovered the standard pay was a lot less than I was making in my little local band. Like, a LOT less. I am sure the deal will be "right" but it never hurts to ask and be sure up front.

My 2c I play in a rather loud 60s band. We routinely run with a pair of 12" RCF tops and a powered mixer, piano and guitars through the PA, plus a kick mic and an overhead for the drummer. I run a Little Mark III and an efficient 600watt 4ohm 2x10. Very easy to get buried if I dont have my bass through a sub. On the other hand I own two powered subs, one is a 15" 500 watt studiospares jobbie that weighs a ton and the other is a Voce Systems 12" 600 watter. I have only ever used both subs when we played a 1800 seater Xmas ball at an indoor bowls venue & that was with my own 1000 watt Dynachord powered mixer and speakers in tandem with the existing 1000 watter! Sometimes you really dont need that much in the sub area, really. P.S. Anyone in the Huntingdon/Cambridge UK area looking for a sub, I am thinking about maybe selling one or both of mine cheaply.
Brilliant input!
Sorry but I am with Blue on this one, but there again there are a LOT of rawk type players that dont do it for me. Same with the slappety-bippety types. Its a damn BASS, guys!

Here are the chords, but I'm on Capo 4...
A trombone player friend of mine can switch between bass and treble clef, and transpose into any key on the fly.
Ah but can he do it on piano or guitar? (grinz) -

Learn your fretboard properly. Learn the notes for all the modes of all the scales. There are only 12 notes, after all. And it's all patterns, guys. Google "The Nashville Numbers System". Yo will never worry about transposing on the fly gain. -
Why are music stands not acceptable in guitar bands?
ivansc replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
A friend of mine made tiny clip-on-your-mic-stand sized music stands and kindly gave me one. Takes an A5 sheet and has a two ring binder mechanism. Unobtrusive and bloody excellent. Extremely easy to make as well. -
This is the primary reason that cover bands' setlists are so bland and why we all complain everyone is playing the same tunes. Finding a group of musicians who can pick good tunes that the audience like is very very hard. I'm not afraid to try anything but I usually say if a tune hasn't gone down well after three outings it's time to bin it. I guess the big problem is band members who refuse to even try suggestions. It's only a bunch of notes and a few words. Learn them, play them a few times - keep/bin as required. It's not rocket science, people are too narrow minded. .
Pay a DJ to sort out a good floor filling set for you. They usually seem to manage alright.

I suppose because I grew up in the pre-tab/Tab/TAB world, I have never seen the point in it. A lot harder to learn and apply than standard notation for me. I have to stop and think about which string I am supposed to be hitting and THEN which fret. Almost think writing out the letters for each note would be easier to follow quickly. Can you guys seriously sight read tab?

First 3 notes of chopsticks. P.S. Can I remind contestants that we are talking THREE notes here. Not the whole intro to every Chuck Berry song ever.

My 2005 Fender American `62 reissue Precision bass is not as nice as the fond memories I have of my original `62 Precision that I bought in `63. That said, it is a very nice instrument and improves with playing.
I have, on more than one occasion, been described as "The best bass player I've ever played with". This was, in every occasion, said by the worst musicians I've ever played with.
Yup. I have always been the low rung on the ladder in any band I have worked in whenever possible - best way to learn is play with people who are better than you.

George Gruhn's store on lower broad in Nashville is always worth a visit. Also if you want to see a really BIG used equipment store, check this place out! https://www.facebook.com/MrMarksUsedMusicEquipmentStore/ Tell Mark Ivan sent you - he is a buddy from way back. -
^ tis the future.
(gin) I used to run a tiny 300 watt Peavey 1x15 combo onstage and face it sideways across the stage so the band could hear it but little escaped out front. Guitar player used TWO twins, leant back on the metal support thingies and angled directly at HIM, one either side of his vocal wedge. With side fills carrying nothing but the drums and backline we had a great onstage sound and almost no spill. Sound guys loved us, monitors AND foh. This was back in 1985-ish. Venues mostly ran to a max 4000 people though, so I don't know where the size/spill crossover point is!.

In real life, our drummer recently retired from a career as a senior manager at a large construction company. On gigs he has turned up without: Sticks, cymbals (that one cost him £100 fine for speeding going home to get them) shoes, TROUSERS (twice) among other things. He has phoned us on his mobile saying he cant find a gig he has played several times before - as we watched his car drive past us outside the venue. Even though he had the address AND satnav. The list goes on. BUT he is a lovely chap and a great drummer....

Been told many times that I am "easily recognisable" as a player. Drummer say I am the solidest bass player he has ever worked with. Recent dep keyboard player said he "loved all those cool little melodies you have going on down there". And since I used to break strings all the time but no longer do I guess I am more laid back than I used to be! Who the heck knows? Trying no tto let it all go to my head, as ALL these comments have been made pretty recently. Maybe now I am in my seventies I am finally getting it right!

Mark's Diaries: The journey of becoming a pro player
ivansc replied to markmcclelland's topic in General Discussion
5 days and no update - Could it be that our Mark is too busy working to post? Fingers crossed mate. -
Bumped into him in Centennial Park Nashville back in the eighties. Only this time he was wearing a paisley pattern powder blue matching shirt and bermuda shorts! What a character & a real nice guy. And yes, funny as hell. Beck then I suspect he spent as much time in Nashville as he did in Memphis. And let us not forget Carla, is no slouch either.
