I think it's entirely unjustifiable today to spend £2,000 on an acoustic guitar. The sheer quality of some instruments at the £500 mark is incredible (check out Faith Naked series - absolutely beautiful!). There are low-key artists out there who play signature Farida guitars and basses, and they're far from Gibson money, but they sound great. And besides all that, the punters in the local pub still don't care about the minutia of tone, so setting aside issues of tone, why do we do it? Why do we laugh at some entry-level gear, when that could be what spawns a great career for a great musician?
I used to own an acoustic guitar that would cost more than £2,000 new. It was a hand-built Le Voi D hole gypsy jazz guitar. I sold it to buy a double bass that I thought I needed. The guitar I have now cost a fraction of that at around £400 (A Cigano GJ15). It looks very similar, makes a similar sort of noise, but I would have picked the Le Voi every time if I had to choose between the two. I doubt many guitarists even could tell the difference between them from a distance, but there was significant difference in quality of build and tonal quality that reflected in your playing.

Is Keef right, Sgt Peppers is a load of tosh?
I was under the impression in the early days Manzarek used some sort of combo organ, used his feet I believe
Ray talks about it here wrt Riders on the Storm... It depends... Refuge of the Roads, for instance, is packed full of short improvised, melodic bass breaks... but they are an integral part of the tune. Are they technically solos though? Probably not. The bass is playing a slightly different role than it more usually does. More like an improvised counterpoint.

Depends what you mean by "decent" and "low cost"! GAK have Seymour Duncan SSL5 strat pickups for £42 http://www.gak.co.uk/en/seymour-duncan-ssl-5-custom-staggered-for-strat/31885

A Gibson ES175CC, like this:

I had an Epiphone Broadway for a few years that was really nice. Proper jazz box sounds, especially when strung with flats. You should be able to pick one up for less than £400.
-
To be honest, as it is, I wouldn't expect a lot from it. Maybe £80 to £100? Possibly less... there's not a huge demand for home made guitars, no matter how nice the hardware is. The machine heads are Schaller M6s, I think, which go for something like £75 new (gold)... The bridge again is about £75 new... You might be able to get £80 in total from them. The pickups... I don't think I've ever seen second hand ones for sale... they're Kent Armstrong so should have some value. They were sold by WD music originally and I don't remember them being particularly expensive at the time. The finish on the body suggests it might have been bought off the shelf... are there any markings on it? In the neck pocket? I reckon it was probably assembled in the UK, given the pickups.
-
It's almost certainly home made.... might be worth popping the neck to see if either it or the body are branded. Hardware is very nice, but suffers from slightly dodgy placement... the humbucker is slightly misaligned as is are the machine heads. The pickups I remember from the back pages of Making Music magazine from the early 1990s... I think they're Kent Armstrong Rainbow pickups. Might be worth parting out?

Nice! What are the pedals?

Ernie Ball Musicman logo decal & repainted headstock
dlloyd replied to lawetlatla's topic in Bass Guitars
The logo on a stingray is screen printed, not a waterslide decal, IIRC. EBMM will not sell you another decal. They don't sell any aftermarket parts, unless you exchange an existing part. So they'll replace a neck if you send them the existing one, but only for an identical neck (i.e. they won't exchange an unpainted headstock for a painted one or vice-versa) -
I'm gradually building up my pedal board again. Slow process as I've just bought a house. This is how it looked a few years ago: Vox Wah == Boss CS3 Compressor == MXR Wylde overdrive == Marshall Shredmaster == Boss BF2 Flanger == EHX Small Clone Phaser == Boss DD5 Delay == Fender FDR1 deluxe reverb == Boss TU2 tuner == amp Most of those are gone, plans so far: Vox Wah - gone - want another wah but possibly not a Vox Boss CS3 Compressor - gone - probably not going to bother with another MXR Wylde overdrive - gone - probably go for something like a tubescreamer Shredmaster - still have Boss BF2 Flanger - gone - replaced with earlier MIJ BF2 EHX Small Clone - gone - to be replaced with Boss phaser Boss DD5 - gone - will buy another (love these) Boss FDR1 - gone - will buy another Boss TU2 - gone - bought another

I have an old Marshall Shredmaster that is great... had it for 24 years or something. For a while they were going for silly prices on ebay because everyone wanted that Radiohead Creep sound, but you can get them for about £50 now.
I've now decided to move on my 00/01 Telecaster and put it on ebay to opt for a different Telecaster and an Albert Lee HH Musicman...not sure which Tele model I fancy yet, but I feel like despite my old one being immaculate and great to play, I fancy a change,
Have you thought about the Musicman Axis Supersport? Tele-ish shape... I bought one from Dubjunkie here on Basschat when I was after a tele... wish I still had it. I find it reasonably easy but I had ear training/transcription lessons when I was at school. They involved a lot of clapping written rhythms, singing intervals in tonic sol fa (do re mi fa so la ti do, etc), getting you to be able to recognise rhythms and intervals and convert them to written music. There's no trick to it, you just have to learn it in a slow, methodical fashion and practice.
I've been playing around with string gauges recently and have settled on 11's on my Strats and LP. However, feeling brave I restrung the Tele with 12's and what a difference! The Tele sparkle is still ever present yet it's like it's just grown a pair, however after about 30 mins my fingers were beginning to get sore. Still, this happened when I moved up to 11's so I suppose I'll get used to it. Maybe a Strat next? Hmm, we'll see! Has anyone else played around with string gauges? I'd be interested in your thoughts.
I'm seriously thinking about getting another jazz guitar... I used 13s on my last one. No string bending, mind!

How do you convert piano bass to electric bass?
dlloyd replied to Mr Fretbuzz's topic in Theory and Technique
Hey guys I bought some Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly piano vocal and guitar books and I'm trying to convert the piano bass to electric bass as I can't find any specific bass books. I'm noticing a lot of double stops, chords and very low b , c and g on ledger lines below the bottom line. Is it best to just play just the lower note of the stops and chords and how do you deal with the very low notes. Easy on a 5 string but if you've got a four, play them as low as you can on the E string and move everything else up onto the D and G strings within say the first 7 frets? I'm trying to keep the notes there as I guess that's where they would have been played on an upright? Read somewhere that Larry Graham I think started playing bass to piano bass? Any advice about converting the lines to TAB appreciated. Thanks.
Transpose up an octave. You'll end up playing the same note as the piano would have done anyway. -
Thanks Dad. That seems to be just the job. I will buy that today. The sample sheet doesn`t seem to difficult for me to learn, and the bit i don`t know, i can try to work out using my ear, so maybe 2 stones killed, so to speak.
Remember that, as it's written for piano, the bassline will be written an octave lower than we would usually see.

Way, way late, but I'm intrigued by these: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/humbucker/medium-output/prails_shpr1/
I though that Double Bass and Bass Guitars are a transposing instrument and were one octive lower than is written?
Yep, so are guitars.
