1. I was in a short-lived Smiths tribute band... we had Ken McClusky from the Bluebells on vocals. Very short-lived (one gig for charity!)
 2.
This winds me up no end. Fair enough if the neck had user related problems then yes, you should buy a new neck. This neck has a ridiculous sideways bow which just shouldnt happen.
I'm not sure we can tell whether this is a user related problem. Nurze posted photos of the bass two years ago on the EBMM forum, which shows a twisted neck (before he was aware of it). I imagine it had the twist when he bought it from its previous owner:
 3.
I'm going to take this advice and come back later. Thank you. i'm going t contact the local importer tomorrow :-)
Looking at your posts on the EBMM forum, it looks like you bought the bass around 6 or 7 years ago... would that be right?
 4. Why would it put you off? It's a second hand instrument. Guess how much the manufacturer of my second hand car cared when it broke down...
 5.
Used, but it was fine then. It started to "bend" in the last year. Impossible to fight, and there's nothing I could do ...
Sorry to say it, but this isn't EBMM's problem. When it comes to buying new instruments, your contract is with the shop... his contract is with the international distributor... their contract is with the manufacturer. If a fault develops with a new instrument, you can claim from the shop you bought it under consumer protection laws. In the UK this would be the Sale of Goods Act 1979. If a fault develops within the first six years of ownership (and it's not damage caused by you), the shop you bought it from is obliged to put things right (repair, replacement or refund, case by case obviously). It doesn't sound like you're in the UK, but there are similar laws in the EU. If you buy second hand in a private sale, I'm afraid it's caveat emptor. I would personally take EBMM's offer to sell you a new neck. Just curious, what's the serial number?
 6.
All fingers off would give a slightly sharp D and at 33cm in length that would make it a soprano (in which case the bottom note is C). It looks like the Rottenburgh (4200 series) design so it's either maple or boxwood (conceivable pearwood but looks too light). The photos pitch the colour of the wood somewhere in between so I'd say maple which has aged a bit. Steve
Yes, I would agree. It's probably worth around £50, assuming it's in good condition. Fortunately, there's no moving parts in a descant recorder and they don't go out of whack like other woodwind instruments that need repadding. Are there any cracks in the wood? One concern is that you haven't pictured it with its case. Is there one?
 7.
Im really not getting this. I cant see why the fuss. If your a gigging band and you can pull people in then you will get paid, if you cant you dont do it. The advert seems pretty much up front to me. Im not arguing with anyone, i just cant see what the fuss is all about.
The venue's capacity is 120. There are five slots. If you managed to fill the entire venue with your "fans", that's a maximum of £600 to divide among your band members. Not bad for an evening's work... But who the hell is going to manage to convince 120 people to pay £6 each to watch you play for 20 minutes on a Thursday night? If you can do that, put on your own gigs. The reality is that the venue will be half full at best, with each band having managed to persuade maybe ten people to come. Nobody will get paid apart from the promoter and the bar owner. Even if you manage to get 30 people in, you're relying on the promoter remembering to ask everyone who comes in who they came to see and on their subsequent honesty.
 8.
Loads of crazy cheap Rays about now I have noticed, any more reductions will see a few USA ones in the £500-£600 bracket which I have never seen before, there are some in the FS section right now for £625-700. A corking flamed neck early 90's went unsold on ebay for £800 a few days ago which a year ago would of been £900+ in our for sale section with no ebay fees! Someone bagged a Ray 5 for £532 on ebay a few days ago! Is this just a sign of the times and only a few weeks until christmas or will all the Warwick jokes be coming to the EBMM owners soon?
I don't really see it as too different from the long-term trend. Rays have been consistently selling for around £600 for years. I sold mine (trans gold, mint condition) for £550 about five years ago, after it had sat in the classifieds with little interest for a couple of weeks.
 9.
Hey guys, This may be a bit of a dumb question and i apologise in advance if so but i was looking at Fender P basses and just wanted to know what the difference is between a rosewood and a maple board (ive only ever played with rosewoods) Cheers Seb
All Fender guitars and basses originally had maple boards. One day, so the story goes*, Leo Fender saw someone playing one of his guitars on TV and noticed how the fingerboard darkens where the lacquer wears off through heavy use. He didn't like it so brought in the option of rosewood boards. *Probably apocryphal... Fender brought them in as a response to distributors requests, which may or may not have had something to do with the way that maple ages.
 10.
And what are C and D necks!?
There's some diagrams on the following pages that should explain the various terms used for neck contours: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/news/index.php/?display_article=422 http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/BackContours.aspx http://www.strat-talk.com/forum/stratocaster-discussion-forum/116744-v-neck-vs-c-neck.html
 11.
It could be a new American Standard in a walnut finish that I've seen in Soundslive. Quite an impressive look, but not my thing.
Did it have the tinted neck?
 12. It's essentially a non-export 62 reissue with a fancy finish. I've toyed with the idea of putting black ashtrays on it, but I'd want F stamped bridge tray... which you can't get. Mmm... Chocolate.
 13. They're not overly common... CIJ walnut Jazz. They came in both gloss and satin finishes, the satin version appears to be rarer. This is mine: I've never quite gotten round to take photos of it, so that's Basschat member Starless' floor, who imported it from Japan.
 14.
i dont have a clue whats up with it, but yeah i have posted it in there already but im going to take some better pictures and repost it
It's easy to test with a new 9V battery. If I was in the market for another Hohner Jack (I'm not currently after one, but I had one around 20 years ago and liked it at the time), I'd be happy to buy one that I really liked the look of/sound of for around £180 - £220. I wouldn't offer you that (or anything) for your bass with the information we have so far. I can't tell anything about your bass's condition from your photo and all I can get from your post is that it may or may not be broken. And from hovering over the photo I can see that I'm the only person who has clicked on it. Not a great sign, to be frank. Good quality photos, confirmation that the active electronics work and that the missing knob is only a cosmetic detail and you might get a bite. Even then, I'd be surprised if anyone would buy it unseen/unplayed.
 15. £200 in mint condition, I'm afraid. They're not the most fashionable bass at the moment. Are you trying to sell yours? You say yours needs the active electronics replaced and a new knob... do you mean it needs a new potentiometer? Is the preamp faulty? Try it with a new battery and check that the active circuit is working. Take better photos and post them in the for sale forum.
 16. I can't imagine anyone paying £450 for a Jack... they're nice basses, but not that nice. £200 is a fair price for one in good condition.
 17.
A Mexican Fender P is about £425 - surely there's no way a UK dealer can sell an American P for a couple of hundred less than that?
No, but he did say "cheaper than some MIM models by a couple hundered pounds from some places" i.e. it's cheaper than a MIM Geddy Lee Jazz at $1,399.99 RRP
 18. RRP on an American Standard is $1,599.99 RRP on an American Special is $1,269.99. Looking at the specs for the American Special, it looks to be a similar idea to the HIghway 1 series.
 19.
yeah but this is Meshell ndegeocello.. maybe not the best example
Why not? You can clearly see that she isn't having to over-stretch in lower positions. In interviews she's said that the only physical difficulty she has with standard scale instruments is that she can't tune it in playing position. No, the OP's girl friend will never sound like Meshell, but that's not the point.
 20. This is good, if strat oriented... http://www.strat-central.com/70sstrats/index.htm
 21.
Hi all, I appreciate this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string question', but I'm looking for a rough idea as to how much the following bass would cost please. An all original 1979 Fender Jazz in good condition but with all the usual signs of wear. Off white, turning yellow, bound and dotted neck. Original paint and frets. Thoughts? Thanks Jamie
It might have a code on the heel of the neck that goes something like: 02011093 The way to decipher that is as follows: 02 01 10 9 3 02 = Jazz bass 01 = Neck type (rosewood) It will be 03 if it's maple 10 = tenth week of the year 9 = 1979 3 = third day of the week
 22. I wouldn't necessarily say it would need to be short scale. Check out Meshell Ndegeocello in this clip (she's playing bass from 3:00 into it). She's 5'0" tall.
 23. Makes me want to go play Grand Turismo 5
 24. Harley Benton is Thomann's house branding of guitars made by various far east manufacturers. The headstock on this one looks a lot like those on SX basses... I can't imagine that this is that much of a coincidence.
