1.
Is that a black bell plate, or just the angle? If it is, where did you get it? I'd like one of those!
It's black and came with the bass, which is a non-export 62 RI CIJ Fender in satin walnut (seems to be quite rare). A black aftermarket plate should be easy enough to find... eg. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Jazz-Bass-BLACK-CONTROL-PLATE-Fender-Jazz-Bass-/360386102704
 2.
The mystery photoshop genius just sent me this: I was thinking more like having the logo the same size as the other windows, and maybe as the middle one of the three.
It looks cool, but is it possible?
 3. You may struggle with the Furch (assuming you're intending to sell it). While Furch has a good name as a luthier, the market for acoustic basses is small to start with and there is very limited demand for premium, hand-built acoustic basses.

 6.
Apart from the Fender V are there any other instruments they haven't re-released? The Fender Elite series...?
Fender Performer?

 8.
The finish is not good and probably not original, the neck looks too clean in comparison to the body which raises questions, there is serious repair work to the neck and one of the pots and the bridge don't look original either.
Yep. I think the most likely explanation is that the neck has been refinished when the headstock repair was carried out.
 9.
Looking at selling my Precision so any advice/opinions from all fender experts would be greatly appreciated. I bought this a few years ago now off the forum. Pretty sure its a refin but obviously done some considerable time ago. It has also had a repair to the headstock which I have tried to photo as much as possible and actualy looks worse in the photos than in real life. This repair was again done some considerable time ago and has been stable for many years. The only other thing I know of is that one of the screws in the back of the machine heads is not oiginal. Currently strung with flatwounds the bass is not too heavy (just under 10lbs) sounds and feels like a really good 69 Precision. I know the market is pretty flat right now so dont really have an idea of value so would be very grateful for opinions from those with knowledge. Many thanks http://www.flickr.co...783417289/show/
The neck, aside from the headstock damage, looks exceptionally clean considering the state of the body. Was the neck refinished recently?
 10. Yep... Does that thing have a truss rod?
 11.
Not from me.
What does "I know that I must do what's right, sure as Kilamanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti" mean? Given that you can't see Kilamanjaro from the Serengeti, is he not sure that he must do what's right?
 12.
This 'start on alto and move onto soprano later' malarky is a bit frustrating. I have little enough time as it is without playing the wrong blooming instrument. But is it a case of 'more haste, less speed'? I have looked at hire and it seems that sopranos are more expensive to hire that tenors and altos. Bloody typical; the smallest costs the most. Story of my bloody life.
Yes, it's a case of less haste, more speed (or whatever). Start on alto and switch once you have the basics down... chances are you'll become a reasonable soprano player quicker than you would if you started on soprano. The alto isn't all that "wrong"... the fingering is the same (as written, you play a C exactly the same way, only it would sound like Eb rather than Bb)... the general technique is the same too. There's a certain amount of adjustment, but a decent alto player will be able to deal with this.
 13.
I never get intimidated by the 'its hard' arguments because people say that about fretless and, whilst there is a nugget of truth in there, all they are really saying is that there is another problem to solve. Thme solution is to solve the problem, not throw in the towel. Milliions of violinists play in tune without frets and millions of sax players play soprano in tune. Why couldn't I?
Soprano is usually left until the student has learnt to control their embouchure on alto. It's difficult enough to control the cheek muscles and your breath just to get a decent tone while learning your fingering without having to concentrate on intonation. Alto sax is hard. Soprano sax is like learning to ride a unicycle in a force ten gale while someone pokes you with a broomstick.
 14.
I think you can break it down into each aspect of an "act". Is the act as a whole authentic. Is the performance authentic. Is the recording authentic. Is the song authentic etc etc. If you pay to go and see someone sing and they're miming, that's not authentic, but if you know they're going to be miming, it is authentic. If you think you're listening to artist A singing on the CD but you're actually listening to artist B then the recording isn't authentic. People seem to be relating "authenticity in music" to "quality of music" - although it is subjective, I don't think many musicians would agree that Britney Spears produced a higher quality of music than Beethoven. However, in terms of authenticity, she doesn't pretend to write her own songs - what's not authentic about Britney Spears? (besides any cosmetic surgery) Or is "authenticity in music" the same as "artistic integrity"? In which case i'm not sure Britney Spears ever produced any "art" at all (in that picking a song off the shelf and singing it as instructed is not an artistic expression in my opinion).
The problem here is that the OP has been set an essay on "authenticity" in popular music. What he is most likely being tested on is his ability to review current academic thought on the topic. "Authenticity" is a term that is used in a number of senses in art philosophy, each of which have been studied (and published on) extensively. While this discussion is interesting, it's a bunch of amateurs arguing about stuff we don't really know that much about. The OP would do himself a disservice if he were to base his essay on the opinions in this thread. If he does, chances are he won't get that good a mark. A good place to start would be in the Chapter "Authenticity in Art" in the Oxford Handbook of Aesthetics. Fortunately, it's available online... http://denisdutton.c...uthenticity.htm
 15. To the OP... Have you been to the Uni library? What does "authenticity" mean? Is it a valid measure of worth? Are there different kinds of "authenticity"? Can something be "authentic" in one way and "inauthentic" in another? Are there types of "authenticity" that are defined by the artist and types that are defined by the listener? That should provide you with enough for an essay. Read this book... http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=AxfSyg5PZ6sC&pg=PA78&redir_esc=y
 16.
Well yes, pretty much all of Motown with a few exceptions like Marvin Gayes whats going on. The artist's had virtually no choice in what they were singing. Its not worthless, there are many people who play music to please themselves but very few of them gain a big following.
I'm just not sure your definition is valid... is this "inauthentic"?
 17.
in discussing the music. IMO the music is authentic when written by an artist/ band for the purpose of expressing themselves rather than writing it to make money or having it restricted/adapted to fit in with an outsiders view of what a single should be.
Is this therefore "inauthentic"? If so, "authenticity" is a worthless concept.
 18. I've been out of the loop in terms of retail prices for a while.... £1,400 for a standard US P???
 19.
According to Andertons music, Fender are discontinuing all guitars and basses from the '08 USA Standards to "make way for new lines". Just wondered if anyone has heard or read anything of what they're bringing out?
They do this every few years. Rename the range, make it ever so slightly different (a slightly different bridge, for instance) and charge you an extra £100 for the privilege.
 20.
Is this yours, or just a pic of one??
I refer you to Johnny 's post...
I've owned two - one in original finish and one refinished. I am quoted in the Barry Matthews book (sorry Howard!) and I also wrote an article about them for Bassist Magazine in the late 90's. The pictures posted here are of my original finish one, which was used in the article. Cool basses. Not sure they sounded any differenet but they looked great (though a bit cumbersome). Cheers Johnny
I posted them for the benefit of people who haven't heard of them.
 21.
Otherwise known as poplar. Always interesting to note the use of labels by wood suppliers to describe otherwise fairly non-descript woods!
Tulip wood is wood from the tulip tree, Lyriodendron tulipifera. It's sometimes called "poplar" but it's only distantly related to the tree that we (in the UK) most commonly call "poplar". While tulip wood is often called "poplar", not all poplar is "tulip wood".
