It's a bit later than that, around 1987 to 1990. £1,200 is a bit on the spendy side.

As long as the custom decal doesn't say Fender, fine.

Urgent-ish. The real deal? Fender USA Musicmaster. MONDAY 5th MARCH.

Looks original... I can't for the life of me think of a reason that anyone would put in the effort to make a counterfeit Musicmaster. -
For me its Night Passage , superb album.
Yes. This. It has a Star Wars cantina band vibe about it.

Because there are more of them out there.
I think he was siding with the Mat.
Yep. The Spectrum series were budget basses but they were well built. Mine cost £75 (used) in 1989 and, to me at the time, felt like a better bass than the Squier range (which were around £180 new). They had obviously saved money on finishing (painted neck), but the components felt solid and it sounded okay. Like a lot of instruments I've owned I sold it not because I didn't like it, but because I needed something else more (a guitar amp). Experience has taught me that nostalgia isn't all it's cracked up to be when it comes to basses, so I'm hesitant to say they're great, but they certainly aren't bad instruments. If I saw one in a guitar shop, I'd certainly pick it up to try it. I probably wouldn't look twice at the Squier Affinity.
Mani, a question if you don`t mind. What happened to the Gison SG you were playing on "this old town" with Weller on the Johnathan Ross show in 07 ish? Never seen you use it again.
Is it this one? http://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/16905/lot/335/
I think part of it is because the Fender name has become synomynous with the four string variety and people hold those traditional values close to their hearts. Breaking away from that preconception of what a bass 'should' look like could lose them some of their market share if they pushed it too hard and fast.
Yep, Fender have made fleeting attempts to introduce more "modern" basses, like the Fender Performer: The problem is that nobody buys them.

I remember these... I went to a guy's house to look at a "Fender Mustang" to find he had a POS Sunn Mustang with "Fender" letrasetted over the scratched out Sunn logo. Looking back I should have keyed his car for wasting my time. Yeah they were the ultra-cheap little brother of the Squier range. They had an interesting take on metallic colours if I remember correctly, with a tinsel effect rather than the usual car-type metallic paint. Ugh.
TBH you'd be better off nabbing the 20th anniversary Squier on sale on this forum! Not much more money and it's a better bass (IMO etc).
Affinity series P vs Westone made in Japan by Matsumoku...
I think this is definately a Fender. I have seen these before but they are a pretty rare beast. Seem to remember a Ventures reissue was like this but might be mistaken. Definately 80s. If you really want to make sure then have the seller remove the neck and see whats in the pocket and on the back of the neck base. If theres nothing there then its a fake my friend. If its genuine then you are probably in the money. As I said pretty rare to say the least. Well worth pursuing IMHO. Good luck
Not all Fenders have a neck stamp.

My first bass was a Westone Spectrum DX in red back in 1989. They're not bad basses. Nothing special, but good as a starter instrument.
I have just had some work done on my MIJ / MIM Fender Precision, & one of the jobs was having a 70's logo put on. My friend who did the work for me had to sand the headstock due to a shadow of the previous logo that was still visible. The new logo was put on & clearcoated but now, the face of the headstock is a bit lighter than the back & sides of the MIM neck. Is there any way of darkening the face of the headstock without sanding it & tinting it again, i.e sunlight, sunbed ,etc.
A UV lamp directed at the headstock face should theoretically do the trick. No idea how long it would take.

I had one for a while. An OLP baritone tuned E-E an octave below a guitar. It sounded great when played in a band with another bassist, pretty much as Robert Smith is doing above. But it didn't cut it as a bass on its own.
major record companies aren't taking risks with bands like they used to. To get with a major record label as a band you need to have already achieved a good level of success.
They never did take risks.
Guess you would have to track back to when miming to songs on TV became the norm. 1980s?, it certainly wasn't that recently anyway...

Did anyone actually find out what their outstanding contribution to music is in the end or not then?
They were central to that whole Britpop thing. Whether you liked it or not, it had an enormous impact on mainstream pop music in the mid 90s. Far more than Grunge or Madchester had. (and I apologise for the use of lame genre names)
Well it's becoming a mystery because i've seen this exact type of headstock on basses in some Vintage and rare shop in Denmark St (the one that looks like someones old front room stuffed with classic instruments). I know, because i commented to the guy that my head looked just like this with this "long number" underneath, but no serial number, he said thats the patent number, the serial no will be at the base of the neck or inside the body somewhere. I've always known it was a bit different but thought nothing of it, it plays like a dream. I bought it around 1988-90.
I'm by no means an expert, but the serial number was on the neck plate until late 1976, when it was moved to the front of the headstock. Various pre-1976 decals did have patent numbers under the Fender logo: There's a few possibilities here. 1. Your bass, or at least the neck, is a 1980s 62 reissue. 2. Your bass is some other kind of Fender P (1978 even) with an aftermarket replacement decal. 3. Your bass is not a Fender, but has had an aftermarket decal applied. Any chance you could post a photo of the neck butt? Edit: I just had a look at the photo you linked in the last post... The "patent numbers" on your bass appear to be: 236,930 3,236,930 3,260,148 These aren't correct when compared with the 1961-65 logos. Also the typeface of "PRECISION BASS" (not to mention its positioning) is significantly different. I know Fender got the decal for the 1980s reissues slightly wrong, but I'm tending towards options 2 or 3. Probably 3.
Given the limited info to hand, there's even a remote possibility the neck's a fake - maybe an old Antoria or something redrilled for Fender tuners.
I think it's unlikely, given the level of correct detail... Why go to the bother of furnishing it with a correct neck code if you're going to couple it with an unconvincing body?
Ok guys. Its a 76 jazz neck with a random body... Is it worth 750? I've another contact selling a 76 for 1200 and it is genuine... Better spending my cash on that? Thanks!
It depends on a few things. What hardware does the body have? It may have just had the body replaced following an accident. You could always pair it with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1975-Fender-Jazz-Bass-Body-Vintage-/270917972520?pt=Guitar&hash=item3f13f83228
HEY BUD , THANKS. NO, I DONT THINK THERE WAS AN EXTRA HOLE UNDER NECK PLATE. COULD THE BODY BE A NON-FENDER?
It's a bitsa of some sort... probably a non-Fender body.
