2.
I've known the singer Wayne ( Marcus ) for a few years, and he's a lovely bloke, and we've played together a few times. *snip* And he's asked me to go with them to Jamaica.
I think you probably already know how to play reggae better than anyone else on this forum...
 3. Sterlings have slightly narrower necks (think J vs P) than a Stingray, the pickup has ceramic magnets compared with Alnico in the Stingray, they've also got a neat series, parallel, coil tap switch, with the coil tap working with a phantom coil to give humbucking while sounding like a single coil. I A/B'd a Stingray against a Sterling for more than an hour before buying the Stingray... they're both awesome, but the fatness of the stingray won it for me.
 4.
Now that is useful info. Is it always off beat, ie, 2 & 4 ?
No... I wouldn't think too much about the theory, just learn the tunes.
 5.
You sure your not thinking of Hymuno kym (sp?) I haven't watched the vid in the OP but there is a girl dressing in similar gear doing similar stuff but very rarely shows her face on youtube.
Yep, the girl in the OP is most definitely not this hottie...
 6.
I may have a chance to tour with my mate's reggae band, in JAMAICA. So I've gotta learn some reggae. How ??
Just busk it... nobody will notice.
 7.
I had tried shortening the strap but no matter how short I went, the lowest frets were just too far away for me to play them without crooking my wrist (or growing much longer arms!) and experiencing the pain.
It sounds like you're holding the bass wrong. The "fix" you've employed is only going to cause additional problems down the line. Strap your bass on, and sit down with it sitting on your right leg. The headstock should be at shoulder level. Stand up... the bass should not move. The headstock should still be at shoulder level.
 8.
Some responses are far too serious!
Some are also more about personalities than they are about the bass. I wouldn't pay them too much heed.
 9.
Yeah, I like the Hatful version too....and the 12inch New York remix is quite good...! I detuned the guitar to learn it..... Think I'll have a go at 'Barbarism Begins at Home'.....quite a funky bassline! Any other top Smith's basslines which people could recommend?
Barbarism is a great tune... again played with the bass tuned to F#, B, E, A. Most of the Smiths basslines are good... Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now is fun to play.
 10.
The 'single' version....... The version on hatful of hollow is more 'swinging' I think the hardest part was the chorus - the pause and then the slide up.....took me a couple of days to get it right, probably drove the neighbours round the bend....
I prefer the Hatful version, but I think I'm in a minority... Did you tune up to F#? Helps a lot.
 11.
forgot to say thanks for the help.........thanks for the help guys, it went swimmingly!
Which version did you play?
 12.
Slightly more seriously: when you look at that site, does it tell you you have anything in your basket? I just glanced up and noticed it had put 3 things in my basket, without me clicking on anything. It was only £5000 worth of kit - I could just tell the wife it was an impulse buy.
I had 99 cables, each priced at more than £1,300... out of stock, unfortunately.
 13.
If you arent happy Id take it back. Im guessing the buyer knew before he bought it that it wasnt original? Or it was described as modded?
You're covered by the Sales of Goods Act on second hand goods, but I don't think there is any obligation on the part of a shop to detail modifications. I honestly think you would struggle to argue that something like "Used Stingray 5, two pickups" is in any way a misdescription. From the limited information in this thread, it would seem that the bass was patently not an official HH SR5. I don't think there's any valid basis on which to return it if he bought it in person. If he bought it over the phone or on the internet, there's 7 working days (IIRC) cooling off period.
 14.
Some good points there. The only other one I'd add is that the bass player(band member or session player) played what was right for the track.
There's also some room for maneuver in this option. Paul Chambers' bassline on 'So What' was as right for the track as it's possible to get, but it would be daft to play it note for note as it was improvised. Andy Rourke's bassline on 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' was absolutely correct for the track, but it was a composed part and is absolutely integral to the song. Change the line in any significant way and the whole thing falls apart (assuming you're not rearranging the whole thing).
 15.
Thanks I would love the person who might have owned the bass to be a member to tell me as its been mis sold if it is a mod
It's only been mis-sold if it was advertised as a factory original.
 16.
na somewhere else in a shop lol £1200 seems a bit steep hey but sounds great
£1200 is, in my opinion and given the evidence, way over the odds. I'd say there was next to no chance that this is an original, factory installed pickup. Aftermarket modifications to Musicman basses substantially devalue them, particularly if it's a modification that involved a router. Of course, if this is a custom bass built that way by Musicman, it's about right. Genuine custom Musicmans do exist, but they're not common (it's a service the company have never really offered). They also tend to be custom finishes rather than extra pickups.
 17.
I agree, but in some ways it annoys me, like when radio stopped doing creep live and moaned about how boring it was doing it over and over again, well most of us in our work have to do the same thing each day for years, its their right to choose not to, if they can still make a living doing other things, but you hope that some sort of humility is displayed towards the punters who made them big and love certain tunes
To be fair, they had been playing it for six years, and it was probably getting a bit boring paying royalties to Albert Hammond... It didn't half get a reaction when they played it again at South Park, Oxford in 2001.
 18.
Fun is overated. I think it should be something you have when you are doing something satisfying and of value and not just an end in itself.
Yep, that's how I'd define fun.
 19.
I both agree and disagree. To actively seek mediocrity is disappointing and ultimately unfulfilling. However, how will you ever be known as a "good bassist" if all you do is perform carbon-copies of other bassist's lines? Surely there is more to it than that?
Being 'known' is over-rated. Having fun is where it's at.
 20.
You'd get blamed for that as well?
My back hurts just looking at John's basses...
 21.
- Take Layla as an example. If following a well known example of a song accurately is desirable, did Clapton get it wrong by re- arranging it for the unplugged set ?
Yes... yes he did.
 22. This might merit a whole new thread, but to what lengths do those of you in tribute bands go to perfect your basslines? Do you transcribe from a single source, say, the best known studio version... or do you go further and hunt out numerous live recordings and make a more studied analysis of how the original artists tackled the tunes?
 23.
I'm going through the same thing at the moment so I can sympathise. I used Chuck Rainey's Complete Electric Bass Player (book 1: method) but it sounds similar to the Josquin des Pres with all the one-note rhythm for pages and pages.
I had the Chuck Rainey book... it's not bad, but I think the way the same tunes are repeatedly transcribed to different keys isn't overly helpful as it allows you to guess the next note rather than forcing you to read it. What I think would be a good idea for someone first learning how to read, is to buy some music books of bands that have fairly simple basslines, nothing too funky or clever (think U2 or Oasis), cover the Tab with masking tape (if it has bass tab) and take it from there. Far more interesting than some of the crappy exercises you get in study books.
 24. Zemaitis bass: No idea how much it's worth, probably several tens of thousands of pounds.
 25.
Nicely spliced together there Loyd...But i didnt say i could play Good Times better than the original... Different yes... Im not talking changing the bass line but adding or taking away parts...
Good Times is one of those tunes I would leave "as is". It's such an iconic, composed bassline that to alter it would just feel plain wrong.
