Sterlings have slightly narrower necks (think J vs P) than a Stingray, the pickup has ceramic magnets compared with Alnico in the Stingray, they've also got a neat series, parallel, coil tap switch, with the coil tap working with a phantom coil to give humbucking while sounding like a single coil. I A/B'd a Stingray against a Sterling for more than an hour before buying the Stingray... they're both awesome, but the fatness of the stingray won it for me.

The "fix" you've employed is only going to cause additional problems down the line. Strap your bass on, and sit down with it sitting on your right leg. The headstock should be at shoulder level. Stand up... the bass should not move. The headstock should still be at shoulder level.

I honestly think you would struggle to argue that something like "Used Stingray 5, two pickups" is in any way a misdescription. From the limited information in this thread, it would seem that the bass was patently not an official HH SR5. I don't think there's any valid basis on which to return it if he bought it in person. If he bought it over the phone or on the internet, there's 7 working days (IIRC) cooling off period.

Paul Chambers' bassline on 'So What' was as right for the track as it's possible to get, but it would be daft to play it note for note as it was improvised. Andy Rourke's bassline on 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' was absolutely correct for the track, but it was a composed part and is absolutely integral to the song. Change the line in any significant way and the whole thing falls apart (assuming you're not rearranging the whole thing).

I'd say there was next to no chance that this is an original, factory installed pickup. Aftermarket modifications to Musicman basses substantially devalue them, particularly if it's a modification that involved a router. Of course, if this is a custom bass built that way by Musicman, it's about right. Genuine custom Musicmans do exist, but they're not common (it's a service the company have never really offered). They also tend to be custom finishes rather than extra pickups.

This might merit a whole new thread, but to what lengths do those of you in tribute bands go to perfect your basslines? Do you transcribe from a single source, say, the best known studio version... or do you go further and hunt out numerous live recordings and make a more studied analysis of how the original artists tackled the tunes?

What I think would be a good idea for someone first learning how to read, is to buy some music books of bands that have fairly simple basslines, nothing too funky or clever (think U2 or Oasis), cover the Tab with masking tape (if it has bass tab) and take it from there. Far more interesting than some of the crappy exercises you get in study books.

Zemaitis bass: No idea how much it's worth, probably several tens of thousands of pounds.
