Buy a Precision, get a jazz neck off ebay and swap them. (Just checking... jazz and precision necks are interchangeable, aren't they?)
The term "chops" comes from horn players, as far as I know - it refers to their cheeks and so forth because of the muscles that you develop in your face as a horn player. The better your chops are, the better you play!
I thought it was related to 'woodshedding'... but then I may be misunderstanding the original meaning of 'woodshed'... you chop wood there, right?

Yet another "identify the bass" - Wonderstuff this time
dlloyd replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Bass Guitars
Went to see the Wonderstuff at the O2 Academy in Glasgow tonight - and very good too. However, what's the mystery black bass that Mark McCarthy is playing....
Looks like a Washburn headstock. -
And 'pickguard'. It's 'scratchplate'.
-
Speaking of jazz, I've decided I no longer like the term 'changes'... It's 'chords'.
Thought I'd found a bargain on the bay then :lol
Only happens if the seller is drunk and lists it in the crochet needles section
You're all incorrect! I will be very interested to see if anyone else knows what really happened on that recording!
Carol Kaye came in and redid the bass track after Geezer left, then didn't tell him?
Q:You've always experimented with effects. Can you name some of the units you've used in the past and what you 're using now ? GB: I don't use anything at all now except for a chorus pedal and a flanger, just in the Ozzy stuff. I used to have this Yamaha pedalboard, I think they only made a few of them. It was like an experimental thing - I don't think they ever went on sale. I used that particularly on the Born Again album. There was lots of stuff on that - all those weird, bloody things that everybody thought were keyboards! It was bass! I tend to sort of try something and then once I've done it I really don' t go back to it - like the wah wah on "NIB," for instance. Unless it works really well I won't bother with it. I just prefer playing straight bass.
Geezer has mentioned in other interviews he used a Tychobrahe 'wah'.

I'm a bit late here, but I'd say the Sterling range is really aimed at competing with G&L Tribute. Once used Sterlings start filtering through, I'd imagine we'd be talking £300 - £400 for a decent Musicman. I probably will get one.
any tips for writing the arrangements and finger patterns?
I would get a hold of a decent chord melody jazz guitar book. Some good info here... http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/archive/ind...hp/t-26958.html

SOLD: Sadowsky NYC Standard 4 - big singles - ash/maple/spalt
dlloyd replied to Marlat's topic in Basses For Sale
I am pretty much forced to sell this bass because I have purchased another bass that is considerably more expensive and I want to cover part of the cost. I am still tempted to keep this bass, but the sensible thing to do is sell it.
Don't see you too much round these parts... seriously nice bass, Mark... if only I had the disposables! -
I think its his attempt at the "Django" Reinhardt" style.... Garry
That's what I was responding to. What this guy's playing is fairly run of the mill chord melody guitar played on a bass. It doesn't sound (to me) at all like Gypsy Jazz, but that might be because I studied it for a couple of years. It does sound quite a bit like Chet Atkins style fingerpicking. Mind you, Chet was influenced by Django...
-
It's not a whole lot like anything Django did.

I'd buy Mark Latimour's Sadowsky (check out the for sale section)

Online shops with good returns/customer service
dlloyd replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
Online retailers (or mail order, etc.) are legally obliged to give you a seven day cancellation period on completion of the contract (ie. getting the item) in which you can return the item for a full refund. I can't remember if that's seven working days or just seven days. Google for 'Distance selling regulations'. -
I trust you've also had it sprayed metallic purple and replaced the pickup with something tasty like an Artec soapbar.
Pink Sparkle and a 2Tek bridge FTW!
-
Ageed - it just looks like graffitti to me and if people think it makes the bass worth more I take the opposite view. Having said that, I always kind of regret turning down a pre-CBS Precision offered by a bloke in a pub in Benwell for 150 quid on the basis some twit had carved the word 'Funk' in the heel of the neck.
Small world... I bought that very same bass. It was an absolute pig at first, but plays great now that I defretted it and swapped out the horrible old flatwounds for rotosounds. I'm thinking about routing it for a Kahler.
Why specifically Nordstrand coils? Hype?
I don't know if hype is the right word. I've certainly read good reviews of them and I like the look of them. Is there a reason I should avoid them?
-
For what it's worth, I would be going for something that looked a bit like this: with four strings, ebony board with no fret markers, black hardware, Nordstrand dual coils with a ramp in between. No idea at the moment about which preamp I'd use.
Don't worry about giving Sei HQ a call. They're all very approachable and won't mind answering your questions and giving advice. I wanted a Sei for years and years as well and they're definitely worth the money. Every time you even look at it, the bass will bring a smile to your face. Go to the website, work out which options you want and call Sei HQ
Cheers! I pretty much know exactly what I want, but after a great deal of thought, I'm going to sit on the idea for the time being. I probably could afford to order one a bit of financial juggling, but there's enough doubt to make me want to wait until I'm a little more certain.

I still have difficulties with the idea of 70s Fenders being vintage instruments... They're old, right enough, but in the 1980s you couldn't shift them... the perception being that they were awful instruments, not just compared to pre-CBS instruments, but also in comparison with new ones. When did they suddenly get 'good'?
-
I've come across it, but never had to use it other than in solfege classes (so not in the last 20 years). The German system was also fun, where Bb becomes B and B becomes H, and sharps and flats got their own names (Cis, Dis, Fis, Es, As, etc). Never needed to use it, just saw it in dual language clarinet study books.
-
Pick up in person for sure... and only if you really know what to look for. I don't see any holes for the finger rest or for the pickup and bridge covers.
-
Yeah I keep looking but they seem to be quite rare. I suppose people don't often undo random parts of bass bridges and put them up for sale. Seems reasonable when you look at it that way...
When I've seen them, it's been by chance, when I've been looking at buying a stingray. If I were you, I'd do a saved search, so Ebay emails you when someone puts a kit up for sale.
-
Ah. No. I don't have the springy bits, just the older-style bridge.
They stopped installing the springs in the mid 90s due to litigation risks (people were cutting their fingers on the springs). They can be retrofitted, and EB sold kits for a while, but they're not so easy to get nowadays. They appear on ebay from time to time.
