1.
I am really torn at the moment after putting a 62RI neck on my standard US jazz and falling in love with it all again. I have almost convinced myself that my Marcus Miller may need moving on. However I adore the neck on my Marcus, and I know it is a long shot but wondered if anyone wanted to trade or even buy the Marcus body. Sale of the body would basically mean that I would have the money to go towards a 75RI body from stratosphere in the states. If you have a body and want to go active then this might be for you. The bass is almost 12 months old and is in excellent condition as you would expect. Perhaps a Geddy owner who wants to go active may be interested?
How much would you want for it?
 2. I tried downloading Audacity recently and couldn't do it. The website directed me to what I assume is a new version that you have to pay for. Fortunately I had an old version on another computer. Most USB audio interfaces come packaged with Cubase LE or something similar.
 3.
Thanks guys - strange that I've gone full circle with the basses. Been struggling to find a bass that sounded good with the band, and the jack fits the bill...
Back in the dim and distant past, I had a Hohner Jack Custom, and yep... it was a fantastic bass. I think I pm'd you about the Jazz...
 4. The other question that needs to be asked is why he waited two years to bill you, and if it is legal to do so.
 5. If the dehumidifier is on 24/7 and is 250W, you're talking: 0.25 kW * 24 hours * 365 days * 2 years = 4380 kWh So the amount used doesn't seem too outlandish. The question that needs to be asked is how he's converted the cost from kWh into a bill for you. Energy prices have not remained constant over the last two years, and the bill really should have been broken down to reflect this (unless he's been on a fixed tarriff for the last two years at that price, which seems unlikely). There are rules on the maximum resale price of electricity that are set by the Electricity Act 1989, as ammended by the Utilities Act 2000. You might want to contact Energywatch, who should be able to advise you on this.
 6.
Has he shown you the bill? £650 for 3711 units works out at 17p a unit. That's incredibly expensive even for a domestic tariff. My home tariff is around 9p per peak unit and my work pays 7p per minute for peak use. If you want to calculate usage for yourself it's quite easy add up total watts used so 400W for Mesa, 80 or 100 or whatever each for the powerballs, 750 for the power amp and I reckon factor in another 150W for sundries (brain, etc...) I'd assume your dehumidifer is around 250W (400+80+80+750+150+250)/1000 gives you the total in Kw/h # of hours * units * cost per unit tells you what you should be paying
The dehumidifier is on 24/7 remember.
 7.
Finding a 10,000 year old mammoth, and then killing it just to make a nut seems excessive.
While it might seem odd, mammoth ivory is actually fairly common, and quite 'cheap'. It costs around £50 for a kilo of material that would be suitable for making into nuts. Okay, not as cheap as bone or graphite, but not mega-expensive. There's no question here of scientifically important specimens being used for the vanity of the rich. Ritter won't be cutting up museum quality tusks (which would cost tens of thousands of pounds).
 8.
Just reading "...the nut is carved from 10,000-year-old mammoth ivory." Just puts me into a rage!
Why?
 9.
But what do I do?? follow the guitar?? or the drums?? My friend mentioned something about ''locking in with the drummer'' what the hell does that mean???
It essentially means 'playing in time' with the drummer. You're both playing the notes at the 'right time'. You get there by listening to and feeling what the drummer's playing as you're playing. Practicing with (and recording yourself with) a drum machine would be a good plan.
 10.
Strangely, just after I got the bass one of the wires broke off the battery compartment. Surprisingly it still works (I guess as you have found) but the level is *very* low. Much lower than I am experiencing. I just have a lower than everything else situation. I've been through quite a few basses over the years and I've seen a huge range in output level. Being passive or active has, somewhat counter-intuitively, been nothing to do with it.
I vaguely remember being surprised when I found out my old Stingray actually put out a very, very low signal without any battery in it.
 11.
I have a StingRay 3EQ bass - about three years old. It all seems to work as advertised except that the output seems very low. Both my G&L (Tribute) and a passive P-Bass blow it into the dirt output wise. I have to crank the input on my amp (An Ashdown ABM) up to almost max to get the needle over to 0dB at all. Is this right or is it broken? I've yet to get my hands on another one to compare.
It's broken. They're not exactly known for having low output.
 12.
Hi guys just wondering would a 5 string musicman stingray or sterling neck fit on a 5 string musicman SUB? just wondering because I really cant stand a painted neck! Cheers guys
I believe it would fit... the main issue would be in getting one. They do pop up from time to time on ebay. EBMM do not sell seperate necks.
 13.
Type52 wrap? That's a bit cryptic isn't it?
It's a specific alloy of steel... it relates to the proportion of nickel to iron. Something to do with 52% Nickel (not sure if that's as overall proportion or 52% of the amount of iron).
 14. It depends. Sometimes you see rests 'bridged' by beams as it can be easier to read groupings of notes if the beams are intact. Dotted quaver rests are fine. As long as appropriate note groupings are used, and they're spaced correctly within the bar, you should be fine.
 15.
I'd love to be able to play with a pick but it's a complete mystery to me how to do it. How the hell do you keep a slippery bit of plastic from falling out of your fingers??
Practice mainly, but there are picks out there that are less slippery than others. I don't use a pick for bass, but for guitar I use Wegen picks, which don't go anywhere thanks to their design... Expensive though.
 16.
Surely it would be easier just to supply the bar staff with the appropriate PPE for the job - earplugs.
Might make it tricky to take orders from customers.
 17.
I reckon a Boss FS-5 footswitch would do the job - but you'll have to read the DD-20 manual to see if it requires a latching or unlatching footswitch.
It should be an unlatched switch. The FS-5U is as sturdy as they come... and they stick together like lego.
 18.
Tower Of Power: Maybe It'll Rub Off (dont tell me he aint go no technique, it may not be pretty but he's lightening fast and super accurate)
+1 Rocco's lines sound simple... It's amazing how difficult they sound when other people play them.

 20.
I'd like to play some funk and form/join a funk-oriented band. I'm not that accustomed to funk bass, but I do love some Jamiroquai stuff. Can you guys recommend some more funk bands for me? I know Jamiroquai can be regarded as acid jazz back in the day or pop nowadays but whatever Also, I'd like some tips on what makes a good funk bass player, and advice about bassline construction: what scales do you guys use, etc.
Transcribe transcribe transcribe. Learn other people's basslines and play along with the records, try to figure out how the bass fits round the drums and how the beat is being subdivided. Take 'He's the Greatest Dancer' by Sister Sledge... listen to how the emphasis is not always on the downbeat, and hits various sixteenth note subdivisions.
 21.
I'm looking to learn some Jazz pieces to help improve my technique. I quite like Jaco and Weather Report. Can anyone recommend a good starting point? Thanks
Depends which part of your technique you want to improve, but 'Come On Come Over' is great for right hand technique.
 22. No idea why, but Sterling Ball never went for my vision of a single cut Stingray...
 23.
Great lists both. Best of luck with Rythmn Stick though. Our band want to do it, but just watching the vid of it gives me a nosebleed. Luckily the (girl) singer would be hard pushed to cover Ian Dury so I may be off the hook.
I can play it, but the challenge is in getting it to sound relaxed while trying to keep it well intonated on my cheapo fretless Yamaha.
 24. Some great tunes there. Here's a setlist I've been given to learn for a wedding gig in March... Sister Sledge - He's the greatest dancer David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes Pulp - Common People Blondie - One way or another Hall & Oats - Maneater Electric 6 - Gaybar Foreigner - Cold as Ice Ian Dury - Hit me with your rhythm stick The Kinks - All day and all of the night The Knack - My Sherona Rick James - Superfreak 10 cc - Dreadlock Holiday Michael Jackson - Billie Jean I'm pretty stoked with those tunes...
