1. The guys over the pond still rave about the Crest CA-9 , but alas , light it ain't . Not by a long shot The "lead sled" amps seem to find more favour over there that here , for some reason .
2.
Does Brian Johnson of AC/DC count? Unbelievably, he actually wanted to sing with us in the second set! He knew our singer was having a hard time with a throat infection and as we were playing typical pub blues stuff Brian knew the material... He was too polite to ask and we were too gobsmacked to suggest it! A lovely guy who always gets together with his family for a meal when he is back home, which is how he happened to be in the pub we were playing as it is round the corner from the Indian restaurant where he had just eaten! The night I nearly backed Brian Johnson...
Anything I see him on , he just strikes me as lovely bloke . No ego , just proper .
3.
I have had my fill of "Charity gigs" also the last one we did NOV last year took me all day to set up an 11 piece band drove 30 miles, tunnel fee then while there another duo used the pa as well as a chior and an army drum thing and backing music for dancers i was at the desk all day all evening then went on last to play for 2 hours, when everyone went we took down the pa drove back got home about 2.30am two things Pi@@ed me off the club was earning a fair bit at the bar and would not contribute , we had to pay for food and drinks, even soft drinks. end of the night packing away the gear we asked for two glasses of coke and was told the bar was shut.
That is unbelievable . Just a real p**s take .
4. I bought an SFX Micro Thumpinator , and the principle is the same . Wouldn't gig without it now .
5. Years ago , I gigged on the country circuit , and the guitarist had a Boogie 1x12 combo that had a 50 or 15 watt switch on the back . He never used the 50 watts , only the 15 watts , and it was plenty loud enough , and we were quite loud as a band on that circuit . He used to use any old chair at the venue to prop it up nearer ear level . Maybe this is what your guy needs to do - just prop it up . He'd probably be surprised at how little "wattage" or "SPL" or whatever measurement you want to trapse out , that he actually needs . Just a thought .
6. Just whip the E string down to a C for this one number , then tune it up again . Our lot play this , and that's what I do . You'll get quite quick at doing it after a while , and you can also fine tune on harmonics on the E string , that's now a C , and the G string . Try that and see how you go .
7. I don't know what your budget is , but I've yet to hear a 210 combo of any other brand , out perform the Eden Metro 210 . 2nd hand price - shop around , and it is bloody heavy .
8. Years ago in a Function band , before our main set of the night , we had accompany the Stage Manager's wife for the 'Kiddies Hour' music . Think 'Hilda Baker on an old Hammond' - that's what it was like . All the kids dancing to 'Knees up Mother Brown' etc , and the all time classic - 'The Birdies Song' . I've played that number maybe half a dozen times , and that's about 5 times too many . But , we got paid , it is sort of expected from a Holiday camp band (even one just in for the night , as we were) to play stuff like this if asked , and we got off with a few of the Red coats after . So a result all round
9. I saw this a while ago . Whilst some of their stuff is about right price wise , I recon that this is quite a bit over priced - nice , but about a few hundred too much .
10.
Akai should re-release / update these !
If they used exactly the same componants , and they sounded exactly the same , they'd still be a market for the original ones as some people would convince themselves that they were better .
11.
I know this is somewhat anethema on this forum but I'd like to have one go-to bass (or perhaps two of the same). I know that one bass won't cover every sonic situation but what I'd like to know is, those of you who use only one bass or one brand, how did you arrive at that conclusion?
I've got a few basses , but have gigged just the one , on every gig bar one , for getting on for 20 years . I've done shed loads of function band work with that bass , and it'll do anything - within reason . Any half decent bass will cover most situations . All you need is the know how to work it . With fingers , slap , thumb palm mute , pick , plucking position of the hand , and maybe the odd effect or two , you can cover most bases . And I'll even argue that you'll improve , and have more fun , by coaxing it all out of the one bass .
12. On reflection , a blinder - as per the other's comments last night , today , and the punter's reaction . Though alas , not for me . Made a couple of numpty mistakes , just through my mind wandering . This wasn't helped by the fact that I had very little room to move . On the plus side , I've gone back to my old heavy cab , and am prefering the sound . Only got to lift from my front door to the car , so the weight is not really an issue . So all in , a good'n , albeit a mixed bag .
13.
really good although Bill lacked enthusiasm somewhat
I think that this is a throw back to his Stones days , when his enthusiasm was saved for , how shall we say it : the after show performance
14.
I wondered that. I always put my combo on a table at a gig, I'm not keen on it playing just to my ankles and lower leg.
Yeah , but did you put the table on the Gramma ?
15. "Boogie on Reggae Woman" , by Stevie Wonder . Not done on a bass , but on a keyboard - always been a favourite of mine .
16. New venue tonight / yesterday . Another little village pub . Good gig , and they want us back . With the clocks going back , it's nice to be home early for a change .
17. Small little village pub , 2nd time for us . Had us set up at the other end , and still no room . Had to put my cab in a fireplace , propped up with wood underneath to stop it moving around . We played well , but we all agreed that it didn't feel right - some nights are just like that .
18.
Oh look a kettle lead. Surprised that one isn't in here yet.
TBF , I've always called them that , and so has every muso I've ever worked with .
19. When my daughter was little , she used to turn my Stingray over , point at the neck plate , and call it a doggie bone . I've no idea why . She's 9 now , and still remembers it . Even she can't fathom it out .
20. I've got to say Chris , this is going to be a bargin for someone . These older ones are great , and for me , this age , proper thru neck , and this particular colour , make this for me , the best S2 you can get . If I had a grand to spare , I'd be all over this , as I suspect would others . Have a free bump (all I can financially do I'm afraid) , for one of the best Status examples I've seen in ages . Just hope you don't regret selling . But hey , that's what happens one here isn't it . hehe Best of luck mate .
21. Hi guys . Bit of a long shot this , but here goes . Around this time last year , there was a green burst Vigier Passion on Ebay , that sold , then was relisted , but don't know if it sold the 2nd time . Does anybody remember it ? Or even own it ? I'm now looking to shift a few bits , and I've lost the guy's number , to see if he still has it (he was in Staffordshire , I think) . If anybody knows who has it , I really would like to maybe make an offer . Long shot , this , I realise . But you never know . Paul .
22. I remember Flea once saying that the album "One Hot Minute" , was all recorded on an Alembic . With maybe "Aeroplane" done on a Stingray . He was a tad sketchy on this , athough he was pretty sure . I think most bass sounds on record (apart from a handful) , will be impossible to instrument pinpoint .
23. Downham Market tonight , a new pub for us . Cracker of a gig . Only issue was the access for the toilet was through the band . One of the guitarists and I had to be on our toes for that . Used the Eden cab again tonight , and it sounded awesome . Seriously thinking about maybe getting shot of the light weight cabs , 'cause there's just something about that cab , for me - but it is a weighty beast . Though I only carry it from my front door to the car , so not such a massive issue . I'll make up my mind one day .
24. Local gig - Bury St Edmunds . Always a stonker , and tonight was no exception . Nice comments after from punters about the rhythm section , suprised anyone noticed Just a late one . Don't start till 10:15 , and finish at 1:15 - the only downer about this place . Otherwise , another cracking night .
25. Eden Navigator pre-amp Crest CA-9 power amp 2x Bergantino HS410 All driven hard by a Status Stealth I can but dream
