  1. Definitely agree, and floating thumb is definitely healthy technique in terms of right-hand fingering on the top three strings. A rest is very helpful if you're needing to hammer away on the E for any length of time though, although I find certain pickup tops are a bit too far away from the string, e.g. Precision
  2. I think one of the best cheap thumbrest solutions is those adhesive rubber feet, like you get on the bottom of pedals. I got a load of black 3M rectangular ones for a few quid and use one on my stingray in the position of a jazz bass neck pickup. Does the job, stays in place and, if you want to take it off, you can remove any glue residue with a little rubbing alcohol. Doesn't look too bad either, especially on a black scratchplate. You can also get clear ones for other colours.
  3. I have one of these and it's a hugely underrated, absolutely massive-sounding bass distortion. Important to note that this is what Karnivool's Jon Stockman uses live for Simple Boy, so that'll give you an idea of what it's capable of... GLWTS!
  4. Classic and Cool Guitars had a black dot bound S8 Jazz Bass a while ago, so it is definitely a thing - https://classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/portfolio/s8-black-jazz/. I've not seen many of them though, so perhaps pretty rare.
  5. Really interesting comparison actually. I know it's in the sound, but that pre-eb looks so much cooler despite the relatively subtle cosmetic differences... Everything just seems to line up a little better
  6. Yeah, the Cog pedals are great! The Punisher one is a pretty basic Knightfall 66, from around when he first started making them. Has the diode selection and also a charge pump to run at 18v. I usually have this always on on channel A, low gain on MOSFET (left side), then use channel B for higher gain with germanium. The Signor Gattino is the TK-421-X (Rat) with LM308 op amp, generally the same as the stock one except it has an HPF on the distortion, so you can get some interesting sounds if you combine it with the LPF on the clean. I love the W&C TFR too. Tried pretty much every other tall font clone out there, including the EHX Green Russian, and nothing's beaten it in terms of the power and low end it puts out. Sounds absolutely massive stacked through the gattino!
  7. The current setup and highly unlikely to change anytime soon, just works perfectly. Only addition will be an envelope filter at some point, which will either go above and after the Whammy, or in place of the XXL. A lot of deliberation on which one though, considering my first choice is rarely available and is hugely overpriced when it is, yet sells within minutes...
  8. Perhaps it's just me, but it always feels like a red flag when I see a recessed body-end truss rod nut.
  9. Aguilar OBP-1 would be the ideal one I would suggest. It's what's in their DB-924/DB-925 external preamps and those sound perfect with Jazz Basses. Very similar to the Sadowsky pre, just a touch nicer sounding and more transparent to my ears.
  10. Correct, also the custom and deluxe telecasters which were brought in December 72/January 73 I believe, but not the standard teles
  11. Think they generally used Northern American hard ash, also used for baseball bats...
  12. My 75 Jazz is 12.35lbs...I've seen the odd late 70s bass get into the 13lb realm!
  13. This guy imports a load of Fender Japan guitars, quite a few specials https://www.whitstableguitars.co.uk/. No basses listed but he could probably get hold of them.
  14. Interesting move to lacquer over the decal - are you aware that the 62 AVRI Jazz Basses have the waterslide decal sat on top of the lacquer and they didn't clear coat over them? This is period-correct as Fender didn't start lacquering over them until the late 60s, and it's why the edges of the decal were clearly visible! Regardless, lovely job and looks great, good work!
  15. Love this! If only it was in the UK I would be very interested, but that import tax will be crazy 😩...GLWTS!
  16. Probably Maui Blue from the international colour range?
  17. Although definitely rarer, it was possible to get a custom colour JB without a matching headstock. My Fiesta Red 65 has a tort plate and non-painted headstock from factory, and I know Martin Petersen from the Bass Gallery has/had one with identical spec. I've also seen quite a few other examples pop up at reputable vintage Fender retailers. On the PB with matching headstock front, I'm sure Norm's Rare Guitars had one on their YouTube channel a while ago...
  18. So the truss rod works fine then? That was the main thing that was putting me off...Think you still would've beat me to it though! It's real looker 😍 Very jealous! I'm properly on the lookout for a CAR, LPB or Dakota Red 65 or 66 at the moment...Congrats on the purchase!
  19. A bit cheaper on their website https://www.guncottonguitars.com/basses#/1966-fender-precision-bass. Still overpriced though, considering sunburst 66 jazz basses tend to be going for 8-9k from most other price-hiking UK dealers
  20. The control plate reminds me of a Musicman Sabre. It's definitely not stylish or pretty to mine eye regardless of the finish...
  21. For me, Aeroplane is the perfect RHCP tune - catchy "radio-friendly" pop tune and great chorus, but with lovely slap on the verse and a cool bass solo. I still love everything pre-Californication but One Hot Minute is standout for me, I think because I've always really liked Jane's Addiction and Dave Navarro adds a bit of that to the Chilis' sound
  22. It's here! https://ultimatebasses.ca/used Found that while searching ultra amber NS2s! I really want this bass, it's gorgeous 😍 What can I sell? πŸ€”...
  23. Looks very much like it! I'm not a P man but this makes me consider converting...Absolute beaut! GLWTS
  24. I'm assuming the 925 doesn't have a voltage pump to convert 9v power to 18v? The 924 runs at 18v with the 2x9v batteries, so if the 925's running at 9v then there's going to be a headroom difference which may account for the 924's clear/richer tone?
