And 14 pages later........
I say lock the thread!...I was very harsh earlier and I regret it and apologise :-s There are clearly fundamental differences in opinion on the matter though, and it's likely to go round in circles. I don't think either "side" in this debate will ever really empathise with the other or come round to their point of view! ...

I'm not completely sure how different it would be with the buyer applying a F****r decal, rather than the builder. Considering the majority of Mark's orders are custom builds anyway and not advertised on the site, they would surely be under the radar?...
And I think somebody kicked off a controversial subject, with their own agenda.
Definitely this. Especially annoying when somebody pretends they had the interests of the builder in mind all along, when in reality they've been stirring s**t for no conceivable reason.
What point am I missing exactly? Please clarify.
I would say the main point, by focusing on that detail. It's about the quality and sound of the instrument. Mark's blatantly not trying to make standard or cheap copies of old Fenders, just quality, hand-made instruments that allow people to have the sound and feel of a vintage bass, without risking losing something with value equivalent to a small house every time they take it to a gig!...The fact that the Fender decal is on the head stock is neither here nor there, and to the vast majority of people it won't mean a thing. It definitely contributes to the look but it's the sound of these things that matters, and that's one of the main reasons why people here are buying them! And sorry everyone else, I'm leaving it there! Discreet and WoT, your basses are beautiful, and I am incredibly envious!
Apart from the Fender decal on the headstock!
You're missing the point.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not particularly bothered
Why bring it up then?
-
I'm confused... (it doesn't take much, I realise!). Is that a Fender, relicked by Limelight or a Limelight J bass with a snidey Fender decal? If it is the latter, isn't that a tiny bit naughty?
It's the latter, but definitely not "Snidey". He's not trying to make anyone believe that it's actually a Fender bass.

Just to update on this, had a great experience at The Bass Gallery this week. Took my Jazz in for a setup, and my Stingray for an electronics fix. The guys (Martin and John) couldn't have been more helpful! They did a fantastic job on both, for a great price, and we had a long chat about all things bass! Amazingly, despite having lived in London for six years now (and in Camden borough for one and a half) I had never heard much about, nor was particularly aware of the existence of The Bass Gallery! Will go there all the time now though, and all the beautiful basses! Good lord...Like a kid in a sweetshop!
If such a thing can play any part in cutting down (especially illegal) rosewood logging, then it's fine by me!
In the context of the sentence, definitely no (terrible) pun intended here!
-
I think this looks great, and like that it's available in other colours. I wonder how it feels, and more importantly whether and how it contributes to tone?... If such a thing can play any part in cutting down (especially illegal) rosewood logging, then it's fine by me!

Could it just be that tortoiseshell doesn't go with anything!?... :hides Seriously though, give me white parchment or black over tortie any day!
-
P.s. You can probably partially blame Justin Chancellor of Tool (and his legion of gear-copying fans) for knocking up the prices on these!
Exactly... you're paying for the name, the trendy make. Don't get me wrong, they're great basses and have that swoopy tone thing happening but at the end of the day, you're still faced with dishing out Em on the plank just get something that works and hit the 'shed...
Not sure I 100% agree with you there visog, having played a few MK2s I must say that they are really noticeably high quality. You can feel the quality and resonance of the wood, and the tone acoustically. The eq is also ridiculously versatile (I'd describe as slightly more than a "swoopy tone thing happening" myself tbh! ). Personally reckon they're a lot nicer looking, better sounding and more versatile than any Fodera I've played, and those go for this kind of price!... Regardless of all this though, I wouldn't pay £3600 for it, it is a bit too expensive for a second hand bass. Knock about £1k off it though, and the bass would already be at my house!
-
If you think that's pricey, you should see Pino Palladino's old midi Wal at the Gallery!... http://www.thebassgallery.com/BassProductListingTemplate.cfm?Brand=Pino%20Palladino&type=Bass%20Guitar&Cat_ID=1
Ah I didn;t realise you'd already asked him about it.... Thinking about it, as he buys the necks in I doubt anyone is making dot and bound necks?
He may have a problem getting the "lollipop" tuners too, to complete the look. They seem pretty rare...
I have to bring attention to the slide around 4m12s. And that's with flats on it.
That is a very sexy slide, like a growling panther I am definitely going for one of Mark's creations!...

An EHX Micro POG would do this perfectly. If you're on a budget maybe a Mooer Pitch Box?
The more I look at this thread the harder it becomes to not get the credit card out and order the 62 P bass I want in Lake Placid Blue RW and Tort guard with chrome hardware... 1, 2, 3, 4... breathe
Fortunately Mark doesn't accept credit card, otherwise I'd have that burgundy mist jazz bass in my mitts right now, and be paying it off! ;-)...When he's back from hols he's hopefully going to start work on one of these for me http://www.frettedamericana.com/product/1966-fender-jazz-bass-2 :-)
At the time of that live video that was Dingwall Combustion 5 into B7K for all tone shaping into an Axe FX II with a tube DI model and some EQ, he switched to using the B7K as just a preamp after that tour and when they went back to using real cabs. The tone on that video is the DI feed from his rig with a small blend of the Go Pro mic.
You've probably seen it, but this gives a very good indication of how Nolly gets his tone. Not sure if he was using the Cali76 at the time of that live video, but it makes a big difference to my ears. http://youtu.be/lMxbP1V3WBo

Robert De Leo (Stone Temple Pilots) uses one here. Sounds nice and pretty heavy, when you can hear it!...

I've got a Blower Box too, and it is awesome! Using it alongside my COG TK-421 for multiple RAT gain stages at present, though three things to note:

It is an aggressive and full on pedal. You can get overdrive from it at lower gain, but it's still a cutting clanky, gnarley sound!
It's not currently available over here, so you'd need to buy from the US
It looks funny (in my opinion). Never really heard Voivod, but if you're not a fan of slightly over-the-top, cartoon like etching you'll probably want to put some tape over it:
I've had a Rat Tail before though, and I thought my COG TK-421 was better than that, but the Blower Box totally shits on it (the Rat Tail).
I run one Knightfall as my base tone and then switch to another on higher gain
I swear by mine for an always on slight-overdrive sound. It's dynamic in the same way as the SFT I used to have, clean when playing soft, but a really nice, natural, tube-like grit when you dig in. Doesn't colour the tone at all either, very different to the VT/SFT "Ampeg Mids" sound and character I find, which would probably make it quite useful as an addition to your palette of tones! The Knightfall also sounds great high-gain too, which is where the 66's dual channels and clipping options really help.

If he can make me one of these, I think I'll be getting one! -
I played a Tribute M-2000 at the Bass Gallery last month and it was awesome. Compared it to a few other basses, including EB Stingrays, and it sounded as good (if not better!) and was as well put together for half the £££!
