1. Having had the chance to compare both directly, I think there's absolutely no discernible difference! A lot of people think the change from the big unit's 24v psu to the small unit's 9v makes a difference to the tone, and that the big unit's "juicier" sounding...The big one is so much noisier though, I think that it's just this playing with people's heads! ;-) Worth noting that some units kept the 24v psu when they moved to the XO version, as it was necessary for operation, so I'm sure that Mr Matthews would've done the same for the BMS if it was really required!
2. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/224784-boss-dd-3-digital-delay/page__pid__2308396#entry2308396 PauBass never sold his DD-3, maybe make him an offer? And do more instrumental bits! ;-)
3. I know that's cheap, but a lot of people on TalkBass are saying they're a bit dark and muddy, which is what you're trying to avoid isn't it? I personally reckon you could get something loads better and more versatile for just a little more dough... Might be worth trying to get hold of an Akai Headrush v2 if you like BC/Russian Circles. Great digital and analog delays, tap tempo and a great functional looper!
4. From the YouTube vids it sounds like it might be a bit "murky" on bass...Brian Cook has one though so can't be too bad! He does use his Akai Headrush loads though.
5. topheteatwo, if you need a basic delay that'll work for bass you can't go wrong with a Boss DD-3 (think there's one in the For Sale section at the minute), or if you need tap tempo get a TC Flashback (has an ingenious tap tempo. When you hold the bypass button down and play notes in rhythm, it adjusts to the tempo!). Both can be had for a reasonable amount, and both will do the job well!
6. Thanks Dannybuoy :-) BOOM! I've ordered from Joe's, and it's on its way. Can't wait to try it on my solo set on Monday!...
7. If I didn't have my COG I'd definitely pick up an Alpha Dog! Brilliant rat clone with diode selection, which many prefer to the Fuzzrocious offering!...
8.
I have a Strymon Timeline and a Boss DD6 on my board at the mo. I'd never do without the Timeline now, it's incredible for ambient stuff, crazy sounds can come out of it beyond just the usual delays!
The Strymon stuff is just ridiculous, but not cheap!... I had a few (Boss DDs, Akai Headrush, TC Flashback) before I settled on the El Capistan. "Tape echo" would probably put most bassists off, but I cannot articulate exactly how beautiful, lush, warm and (most importantly!) clear it sounds! I've been in love with it ever since
9. I'm saying what I've got at the minute! http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h241/albakio/20131104_225429.jpg Some kind of pitch-shifter/octaver, fuzz (green muff type), distortion (rat type), vintage and modern sounding overdrives, some kind of filter, chorus/flanger, and finally delay/echo/reverb... All essential, to get the job done properly!
10.
I have a TB500 arriving today and the pedal should be here tomorrow!!
I was listening to Converge earlier, and that combo's got Nate Newton written all over it! You'll be deaf come Monday
11. Ah man, that Rat King's gonna make the ODB3 look like a joke pedal! :-D
12. With regards to the Rat King, latching or momentary only applies to the feedback loop btw, not turning the distortion on or off!
13.
I find it only works if it is the main, driving melody and rhythm of the track, at least for how i like to use delay.. (I.e trying to be The Edge on bass!!). Can't be a backgroud thing (unless you're going all ambient and post rock)
I'm not sure I agree with this...If you take Justin Chancellor as an example, there are a few times where he uses his DD-3 really well just to add texture to, but not necessarily "drive" a track (like Jambi, perhaps?). One of my favourite uses is Pets by Porno for Pyros, adds a bit of flair to the bass-line, but the bass isn't the driving melody or rhythm by any means. I think it's a nice effect to have and be inventive with, and not just use for The Edge-style dotted 8ths...
14. I use mine (Strymon El Cap) for the tap tempo dotted 8th notes, and infinite repeats if you hold down the "Tap" switch. Demonstrated quite badly here!
15.
Slammi looks interesting, but with the news that the new Digitech Bass Whammy is coming out soon, I'll stick with the design I'm used to...
Same here, new Bass Whammy all the way! Even though you can buy a "cradle" for the Slammi (which sort of defeats the point...) I don't imagine the quirky design will appeal to anyone with a pedalboard! Bass-players aside as well (sorry!), even the Whammy V can be had for only a little more and it's a lot more versatile!
that's exactly when I'd lose my balance and fall off stage
Definitely! After a few pints it'd be a nightmare!
16. Definitely got some of that GK grind too, or certainly a modern SS amp-type sound. You might find this interesting too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiTz51TPdo8
17. Dangerously close to pulling the trigger on one of these! Anyone used one before? You like it? Is there anything better for the price (or less!...)? Al
18.
The compressor is on loan from my bass teacher's husband, but I love it already.
This is surprising, I found the CS-3 pretty unusable on bass! I imagine you'd be able to find a CS-2 pretty easily over in the US, and I would well recommend picking one up. They work so much better! Here's what Juan Alderete has to say about his! http://pedalsandeffects.com/boss-cs-2-my-number-one-pedal/ Good luck with the talent show btw! Though with that dirt selection, you'll blow them away!
19.
To actually quote Tom - "This pedal will kill people" That's what I'm aiming for
Crikey, I'm not coming to one of your gigs! Seriously though, that sounds insane, with all of those stacking and line options! The HPF idea's cool as well, I hope I'm not going to have to send my Signor Gatto back to Tom again for further pimping! Defo get at least a pic of it up when it comes through!
20.
PS the TK will also have the LPF and HPF on mine too!
You've got a HPF on there!? That's quite interesting, what's the idea behind that? Mine just has the two LPFs, one for the distortion and the other for clean. I bet that Tarkin/TK combination will sound incredible! Have you got any special stacking options on there? It's quite a ridiculous thing with COG, I find myself getting very excited about other people's builds!
21. Totally agree! I think it's the fact that he puts serious time into testing, and it helps that he's a bass player too! I had him put a socket in for the op amp on my TK-421 so I can swap them around, but there's just something about the inherent tone that I love. I've had the clean blend and LPF put in, but find I'm actually using it more full on. It certainly holds the low end well enough! I've got a Darklighter on the other side, running at 18v. I originally intended for it to replace my mosfet Bassdrive, but I much prefer its tone. Not tried a Knightfall yet, but I'm sure I will at some point! ...
22. Bizarrely, despite having the same frequency range they do sound different! The Sadowsky definitely seems to colour the sound more, when I tried it out there certainly seemed to be a different treble sound (Aguilar was transient and glassy, the Sadowsky was more "grindy"), and the bass was definitely deeper in the Sadowsky which kind of made the scoop more pronounced (this works very well for some people however!). I actually have, always use, and love my Aguilar DB924! I've tried the Tone Hammer since and didn't really get on with it. Didn't like the sound of the mids or the AGS, and even with the same settings (mids cut) I couldn't get it to sound as good as the DB924. Honestly don't think you'll get the sound of the Sadowsky out of the Aguilar!
23. No worries! If it's the Marcus Miller sound you're after, you need the Sadowsky!
24. Again, these kind of have different applications! The Sadowsky and Aguilar are essentially outboard versions of active electronics, that would usually be found inside active bass guitars. The Sadowsky will make your bass sound like a Sadowsky bass, the Aguilar will make your bass sound like one equipped with their OBP preamp (i.e. Spector, Modulus, etc...). The Tone Hammer actually has the OBP-3 box inside when you open it up! The Sansamps however, as the name suggests, are intended to make your plain DI sound as though it's actually being played through an Ampeg stack! More of an amp simulator in that respect. They're definitely different beasts, so it really depends what you want from this type of pedal.
