Another vote for the DiMarzio Model P here, has serious balls and great tone. I took one out of my old Precision and sold it, replaced with a Wizard Trad as I wanted a more vintage tone. The Wizard sounded great, but wasn't anywhere near as exciting as the Model P! P.s Just to note though, that aside from the above '81 P (which I never should have sold!), my problem with previous P Basses ('73 and '69) was always the E string being louder than / overpowering the others, even with drastic pick up slant...Interesting that you should have the opposite problem!

You can still get great honk with the bridge pup in 60s position, Jaco did after all...I definitely get this with the Bareknuckle 60 HF in my 62 AVRI Jazz. The Wizard 84s are overwound and therefore a darker tone, described here by Hot Rod Pickups who took over from Wizard http://www.hot-rodpickups.com/jb-84-jazz-bass-pickup-565-p.asp

Really tempted by this! However, perplexed by the fact that there are seperate outputs for the drive and deep channels, and no way to blend them? Am I being stupid and is there a simple way around this?

[/quote] You generally get a clearer, fatter sound from them IME, though taps/clicks/other sympathetic sounds that playing generates tend to be emphasised somewhat...The classic test is to put the guitar through a reverb or echo pedal, and shout into the pickup(s). If you can clearly hear your voice in the trail or repeats, you've got microphonics going on!

Mine came with microphonic pickups which, by the sound of it, is the case with the one you've tried. Sounded great when I tried it out (and subsequently bought it!), but squealed like a banshee through a loud amp before I'd even added any additional gain...Stuck some Bare Knuckle PE pickups in it, and now it's just perfect! I'd never sell it.

Isn't the Tone Hammer pretty much just an OBP-3 in pedal format, but with sweepable mid control and an overdrive circuit? Maybe get one of those and see if you like how it sounds, without having to carve your bass up!?
