1. Much as I'd like to test this out properly I'm not sure the protection circuitry on my amp will kick in quickly enough! Though saying that I guess I could do it with a mains supply and a load of big resistors... This is one reason I only put Speakons on my cabs - removes the risk of using the wrong lead by accident or ignorance. Alex
 2.
 Did my Compacts ship today Alex? :brow:
They're departing tomorrow along with a few others! (Been out today so courier couldn't collect) Alex
 3. How many of us are there here then? (Including those that aren't technically in Brighton but still say they're from near Brighton when asked by a non-local) Maybe we should have a Brighton Bass Bash? What a happy and gay affair that would be! Alex
 4. BSSM is the only album I've learnt from start to finish. I'd only been playing a few months when I started to attempt it and talk about teaching you a lot! I always remember Mellowship Slinky seeming impossibly hard. An album full of bass gems! I'm really big into the chordal thing - works well with our bass/guitar/sax/drums line-up and gives the music a totally different vibe and colour. Am writing a song at the moment where I'm playing three note chords and then just picking out one note from each chord to outline a counterpoint melody as the chords change. Also gives you that hip hop trick of making you appreciate the bass when it goes back to its traditional function - take the bass away and it's so much heavier when it returns. Alex
 5. Is it sunny in your bit of Brighton then? It isn't here! Alex
 6.
What kind of 2x12 are you in the process of making?
A vertically aligned ported 2x12" with same external dimension as the Compact apart from an inch or so of extra height, port up the side rather than along the bottom as with my other cabs. Drivers positioned asymmetrically for better response. Similar sensitivity in the lows to the Compact (due to box size) but more sensitivity in midrange. Will be very loud indeed. Very very very loud. Not as fat and smooth as the Compact, more angry. Alex
 7.
these are looking increasingly like what i need... endorsing artist discount alex? I'm playing T in the Park this year!
If you can put together a solid business case then I'm open to persuasion! Which cab(s)? Alex
 8. Those ones have just departed with Fedex 24 so should be there tomorrow! Alex
 9. Mr Fedex is taking some Compacts away today. John's vintage-look ones are going tomorrow as I was two metal corners short (doh!) Anticipating the Big Ones departing at the end of the week, assuming shipping cartons meet the new schedule... Initially we're going to build one each of the Midget, Double Midget and Big Baby (though the latter will take quite a lot more testing so don't hold your breath for anything other than pictures). Midget & Double Midget should be available later this month and then the first full batch will start being built. Midget is already reserved for someone but jump in quick if you want the first Barefaced 2x12"! Alex
 10. My 12" drivers have arrived! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=508581 Alex
 11. Small loud amp and cab for £500 is doable if you keep an eye on the classifieds and are happy to go with a heavier amp. Alex
 12. Which moron wrote that article on tunemybass.com? Daisy chained cabs are in parallel, not series. Series requires completely different and rather weird looking cables. I seriously doubt the problem is with the cabs, there's nothing unusual about them which could result in a particularly challenging impedance curve (like some EA cabs). My guess is that there's something wrong with your Markbass - can you test it with another 4 ohm rig? I gather Markbass's reliability record is absolutely outstanding but they've sold a hell of a lot of LMIIs so they can't all be fault free! Alex
 13. Right, all the Compacts are ready to go, will box them this evening and they'll head out tomorrow for Wed/Thur arrival! Still waiting on shipping cartons for the Big Ones... Alex

 15.
If I can be persuaded they are better/more suitable, I might opt for a Barefaced Compact instead of a Schroe...hmmm!
"For an even lighter rig how about 1 or 2 Barefaced Compacts? These are 1x15 and weigh only about 30lbs and are very easy to carry. I had a Schroeder 1212L and sold it as soon as I had used a Compact for the first time. The Compact is probably not as apparently loud as the Schroeder, which is fairly mid prominent, but produce a more even response that goes down further and is very efficient. At 8 ohms you could drive a pair with any of the heads you mention and that would give you an ear bleedingly loud rig. At £425 delivered they are also probably cheaper than any of the cabs you list." 16. If that larger cab spawned the baby one then I'm starting to worry about a Terminator situation... "When bass cabs took over the Earth!" B-Movie? Alex
 17.
If I can be persuaded they are better/more suitable, I might opt for a Barefaced Compact instead of a Schroe...hmmm!
Would it be worth gambling the £10 return postage to find out if you can save yourself many times more? Alex
 18. Can you find out what woofer is in your 1580? Upgrading that would be relatively cheap and could make a huge difference. Also I see you're using a Mesa 400+ so it may be that you're running out of clean power in the lows, which adding a second cab would solve but changing the woofer wouldn't. Alex
 19.
Thanks folks. Actually can hear the bass pretty well at practice but goes a bit muddy at similar settings when louder. Guess just need to ease off the EQ. Even thinking about hiring rehearsal space to mess with settings at loud volume without the inconvenience of other musicians ;-) Never seem to get the time to before gigs. Good idea about wandering into the crowd though
The problem you're running into is a lack of low frequency power handling from your cabs, so as you turn up you hit a point where the distortion levels from the woofers rapidly increases, which makes the sound much more muddy and boomy. There are a few solutions: 1. Get the rest of the band to turn down. 2. Position your cab close to the walls to get beneficial boundary reinforcement (reflected lows combining in phase with direct output). 3. Turn down your bass EQ and accept having a less fat sound. 4. Get more speakers or speakers with more ability to move air (unfortunately the power handling rating on the cab does not tell you this). Alex
 20.
Whats on the front cover? I'll look out for it!
I don't know, it's only just out in the USA. The weird thing is the first I knew anything about it was when it got mentioned on talkbass! Alex
 21. Apparently not only are Barefaced in Bass Guitar Magazine, they're also in Bass Player this month too. Quelle surprise! Alex
 22.
The floor!!!! It's called Coupling!! :-)
Unfortunately it's the rather random and unpredictable variety of coupling called mechanical coupling, whereby the stage floor acts as a giant drum skin. I wouldn't want to be reliant on that for my lows, especially as it often causes big bottom onstage but not out in the room where you really need it. To get acoustic coupling just keep your cab within a foot or two of the floor and walls - that gives you extra lows with little risk of membrane resonance weirdness, just straightforward reflected sound from your cab coming back and reinforcing the sound that's going forward. Alex
 23.
Do you have anymore pics of the Compact and Big One? Round the back etc?
I'll be doing a photo session soon so I'll add that. The back of the Compact is completely blank bar a single Speakon jack in the upper left corner. Same on the Big One bar the inset roller-blade casters on the bottom rear edge. They don't have a conventional input plate because it would add weight and lower rigidity - plus normally that's also where you'd mount the crossover but the crossover on the Big One is far too big and heavy to go on such a plate.
Can you put the vintage finish onto these two? Or dont you recommend it?
Yes, £25 extra. Something I keep omitting to mention on the site! Two Compacts and one Big One from this batch are vintageised. Alex
 24.
Bloomin heck that was quick! How long does it take you to get stock back?
Depends how fast we can build them! Also waiting on more drivers to come in so target is end of June. Next batches will be: 10 x Compact 10 x Midget 5 x Big One 1 x Big Baby 1 x Double Midget More Big Babies, Double Midgets and Vintages can be made to order, only a finite amount of space here so it's juggling act as to what I attempt to hold in stock based on anticipated demand.
