The peaks on uncompressed bass can be quite tough on monitors but if you're sensible there shouldn't be a problem. Exactly what sort of buzz? Alex
Ah, so all these people working busily on their mockups were wasting their time.
Well I wasn't asking for the opinions of every web designer on basschat, just that of the average bassist! My apologies if I've wasted anyone's time, I simply wasn't expecting those kind of responses, just ones like "more pictures, less confusing menus, less text, etc". Alex

New lighter Vintage and Compacts in stock!
alexclaber replied to alexclaber's topic in Repairs and Technical
3 x Compact remaining, no more Big Ones and Vintages until the June production run! Alex -
Yep, not a lot of mids plus not a lot of mids equals rather a lack of mids! Maybe try adding some muffling at the bridge so you can turn up the midrange without it getting honky? Alex
-
Sounds like you need more midrange - as you turn up the human ear gets better at hearing lows so if you have too much bottom it'll become muddy. What's the speaker situation? Can you get them more earwards? Alex

Is that the same system that Peavey licensed? Aussie chap, right? Alex
Kinell, Alex, what were those screws made of? Enriched uranium?
There's probably about 1/2 lb of them per cab - every little helps! Alex
-
The first few cabs were screwed to hold them whilst the glue sets, then the screws removed and the holes filled with flexible filler to save weight. However they've all been nailgunned together for a while now - slightly stronger but more importantly, much quicker! Alex
I find also with sounds that have a high(?) attack level (ie funky bass sounds) ANY delay in the buffering is noticeable and u have to almost stay ahead of the beat - although maybe i havent set it up properly yet.
That's always been the problem with bass-MIDI converters - they take roughly a quarter wave period to work out the pitch of the note, so the lower the note the slower the response. I believe one historical solution was to shift your basslines up an octave (piccolo tuning or go up the neck) and then let the MIDI system transpose back down. Even with doing that you'll have to play with topspin to land on the beat. Alex

Mrs Barefaced has brought up the important point that a true bassface has to be sustained pout/grimace/grin, not merely a passing snapshot a la Heat's 'look how ugly/fat/chavvy celeb x looks today' photos. Larry Graham is a fine demonstrator: 34 seconds in. Now that is a funkface. Alex

As much as I like Warwick basses (played an '87 Streamer for a decade and my RIM Custom 5 has a wenge neck/board) I've never been impressed by their amps/cabs. When I broke the trussrod in the Streamer I got to spend some time at the distributors and had a good play with their Pro IX flagship rig and it was rather blah. And I've heard too many complaints of the cheaper heads being surprisingly quiet to recommend them. Alex P.S. Honourable exceptions would be the preamp/head with the tiny tube power amp driving dummy load and multiple voicings (what was it called?) and the Hellborg monsters.
This is fairly amusing. Guys wanting all these bells and whistles... and the funny thing is, they will never be used!
So if you make it modular you make them pay for every bit they want - suddenly superfluous bells and whistles get weeded out! Alex

If you're making the preamp 1U full width then I'd consider making it modular, so you could have a choice of valve or s/s input stages, basic or parametric EQ, overdrive or not, valve dummy amp stage, etc. That way you could have one main box and then a series of interchangeable modules that fit behind, so you could produce enough models to keep almost everyone happy. Input: Valve or solidstate Colour: Parametric EQ plus bass/treble shelving, or 4 band EQ plus switchable overdrive Output: Valve power amp to dummy load or solidstate Back panel: DI and 1/4"/XLR line standard. Optional FX loop and crossover. Alex

What would you like to see? What do you think the average bassist needs to be presented with to consider buying? What questions would you like to be answered in the tech/faq section? Suggestions on a post(card) below! Alex
I also think you have this competition in the bag mate. I have only seen drummers with that expression on their face and they are strange people.
It is impressive but we have many months more of The Faces! Certainly a top contender though... Alex
-
Lots of headroom, low distortion, 4 band EQ a footswitchable overdrive channel and a power valve driving a dummy load with enough headroom and gain to go from completely clean to very dirty. DI out. I wouldn't bother with a crossover, no cabs are well designed for them. The problem with asking a hundred bassists what they want from a preamp is you'll get a hundred different answers! I really like how the U5 has enough headroom to not need an input gain knob, pad or signal indicator but I'm guessing that if you have active EQ it won't be possible to take that approach. Alex
Why aren't you getting the digital copy?
Well the free version is a nightmare to read! But maybe I should pay for the pdf... Alex

Active electronics?? Real differences?
alexclaber replied to Jamesemt's topic in Repairs and Technical
P.S. I really do like good active electronics, I just don't need it. But I can't stand the proliferation of cheap active electronics when the money would be better spent on superior pickups. Alex
