1. Their electronics are hit and miss in terms of performance depending on who they've ripped the design off from and how well they've copied it. Their loudspeakers are shockingly poor in every respect. Get an old Peavey or something instead, it'll sound better, last way longer and won't depreciate. Alex
2.
Because 4 wheel drifting around a roundabout on a public road is ok?
Well obviously! Low speed, no-one around to hit, full attention on the road and driving within the limits of my skill. And I actually have a clue what to do and will intuitively react correctly if something weird ever happens and does demand good car control. Alex
3. Ah, that's ok then. Actually, it's not just southerners, have you ever been to Wilmslow? I was deriding a ML63 AMG with personalised number plate when I was last in that vicinity and then realised it was a close family friend driving it. And he also has a TVR Griffith 500 so that makes him ok in any car nut's book! Alex
4.
I've got a BMW X5. My wife has a BMW X3 which actually has more room inside. They also have consecutive number plates - I'm so embarrassed (it was her not me - honest).
Which one of you is it that charges past on the M25 at 90 mph in the rain talking on the phone? Alex
5. I think sometimes having a lower tilt angle can be very important in preventing ceiling reflections, though that's more a vocal mic feedback issue. But any monitor I build will be suitable for vocals as well as excessively tall bassists on excessively small stages! Alex
6. Hmmm, don't you think any monitor needs two tilt angles? Alex
7.
Affectionately known as the Stretch Bogey or even the Torrey Canyon (wiki it if you're too young to remember) here is my 1990 Merc 230TE! 167 thousand miles on the clock, starts on the one!
Ah, the last true Mercedes, built before the accountants wrested control from the engineers. I bet it'll manage double that mileage. I can't understand how people could not want to drive but then I've been obsessed with cars since before I could walk. If I sell enough speakers I hope to indulge in an S2000 (wondering about a shorter final drive?) at some point. Tip for all keen drivers - experiment with different tyre pressures front and back. I can get my Type-S doing very nice balanced four wheel drifts around roundabouts with the front tyre pressures 1.5 psi higher than the back (and all a few psi higher than recommended). And one more tip - don't flick into corners too sharply when you have an untethered combo on the back seat, my old Peavey took out a window in my Nova at uni. Alex
8. Active EMGs sound really nice run on 18V through passive electronics. Alex
9. I see your point. As an engineer I am looked down upon by real scientists as one of those people that gets their hands dirty yet still treated with suspicion by the tabloid press as one of those boffins. If my relatively shallow understanding of economics is comparable there's a whole load of silly language (bulls, bears, doves, hawks, etc) that seems to exist just to obfuscate the situation. Engineers prefer to call a spade a spade fortunately. I think the playing stuff just because you can rather than because it sounds good is often tied to immaturity, a bit like the way precocious children behave. And authentically Spinal Tap-esque guitarists act... Alex
10.
we all hate those guys who use five words when one would suffice (politicians & scientists), or who use long and overly complex words when a short simple word would be just as effective (politicians and scientists.)
Scientists tend to use lots of words because when you're getting down to such precise details you need all those words to make the point exactly clear. Politicians on the other hand tend to use lots of words to obscure the point and avoid giving a straight answer. Two very different situations! I think you're probably underselling yourself Mr Homer. I'm guessing he had a slippier greasier groove than yourself which meshed better with that particular drummer but you might find your more straight-ahead groove approach fits better in other situations. My most recommended album for getting into truly greasy playing is Voodoo by D'Angelo. Possibly the greasiest bass playing ever. Well worth checking out. Alex
11.
I drive around in a Honda Civic (not the latest one but the one before) which with the seat down basically turns into a van with windows.

Mine's in my sig. Its been a great motor, absolutely trouble free and overtaking is a bit of a hoot. Ped and I managed to get a serious amount of kit in the back of it for the last SE Bass Bash, something like 7 basses in cases, plus stands and a half stack rig.
2003 Honda Civic Type-S. Pretends it's a van with the seats down and a slightly slower rollier Type-R when faced with a fun road. Alex
12.
Do you mean these cabs are competitive in Volume or Tone?
Both!
Also what is your take on PA boxes going to be
Good question - first thing will be a very wide dispersion monitor. Have various ideas for a better grade of PA top, whilst I believe the Big Sub will make an excellent live subwoofer. Alex
13.
Im thinking of getting a lightweight rig as well as my normal rig.... match a 4x10......or indeed what matches an 8x10. I mean in terms of sheer air movement etc.
See post #4! Alex
14.
Not sure sensitivity is too big an issue with 1000w at your disposal. I'd guess dinky cabs that you can just keep cranking without them dying would be the true path.
Indeed. And the only advantage of a 4 ohm cab is to get more power out of an amp that can't generate enough voltage to drive the speakers to full excursion, which means it's only relevant with very low power amps or cabs with tons of excursion limited power handling. Alex
15. The other option is to get a more sensitive 8 ohm cab. Power isn't everything! Alex
16. The 350W the LH500 can put out into an 8 ohm load is enough to push most cabs to their limits. In the vast majority of cases the extra 9lbs weight of the LH1000 will be wasted as it takes a very special or very large cab to make use of that kind of power (NB: quoted speaker cab power handling ratings mean next to nothing). Alex
17. And if you'd like your cab to look old school you can have it with metal corners and a Fender-style fabric grill for an additional £25. There may be more of a wait for this customisation depending on whereabouts through the batch build process we are. Here's the first Compact done 'vintage style', made to sit sideways so it can look good under a big wide valve head. Alex
18. Another 'not a shop but you never know if he's playing a gig or has a house with poor security' suggestion: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=47198 Alex
19. 3. StingRay 4. Rickenbacker 5. Alembic? Alex
20. The POD can drive every power amp I know of to full volume, as can the V-bass. Not sure about other non-standard modellers/preamps. Alex
21. And do not under-estimate how loud both models are - it seems that as soon as you reach 6 on the volume they get radically louder! Alex
22. I think the DB750 used to have a habit of doing this too. I guess you could also place a high power resistor inline with the power cable and then bypass it once you've got over the start-up surge. Alex
23. The Schaller strap locks on my Warwick have finally worn out - but they are 22 years old so I guess that's decent going. The RIM Custom has Dunlops, though not sure why we went for those. I've never been one for taking straps off - I'd be happy with a woodscrew and a big metal washer! Alex

I remember when I were a lad and we had to use yahoo to find things on the internet, and it were powered by steam. Alex
25. If you've ever used www.pipl.com to search your name, you might be surprised to find what's out there. I go by my second name as did my father and as does my paternal grandfather, so on searching for my first name and surname I was surprised to find this: http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails...mp;KC=&FT=E relating to my Dad, and this: http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails...mp;KC=&FT=E and this: http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails...mp;KC=&FT=E relating to my Grandpa.
