1. One 410RBH. You'll probably find that's more than enough output for your needs. Alex
2.
If you have 2 cabs the same you will always get the sum of the parts and probably then some because the cabs will couple acoustically. If you have different cabs then you may not get the sum of the parts because the cabs may be out of phase at some frequencies.
Very succinctly put! Alex
3. If you haven't got it, check out the soundtrack to Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, the deluxe 2-disc version. One disc of the concert that's shown in the film and another disc full of original Motown tracks minus the vocals. Great to hear the band exposed, especially with the bass pushed higher in the mix - and the best karaoke backing tracks you'll ever get to sing along with. Alex
4. Just listening to the remixed and remastered instrumental only version from the film soundtrack. 100% Jamerson! Fingerstyle but he's overdriving the input on the desk, hence the added grrr (which is common to most Motown bass tracks). Alex
5.
It's literally the first ever bass cab they made, the amp is the 3rd ever actual product they made.
In which case that is the first 4x10"+horn tweeter ever made! A truly seminal design. Alex
6.
Well i figured since we have a thread for just about every other make of bass amplification in the world we might as well have one of these eh? Here's my "rig"
Wow, that has to be one of the oldest SWR rigs around. Cool! Alex
7.
Interesting point. Did you find that you had to dial in a lot more top end or mids running two 1 x 15???
Two 15"s will usually sound like they have more midrange than one on the floor because by stacking them you get to hear more of the on-axis response from the top speaker. To hear what your current cab really sounds like tilt it back and then stand far enough away that your ears are exactly on-axis (in the direct line of fire of the cone). If you like that sound then two of those cabs will be more than twice as good. Alex
8.
In 36 hours time, I will be giving the Big One a kW of canage. With earplugs in. I really can't wait.
I first read that as 'carnage'! Components for my new crossover design have finally arrived so I shall start assembling that shortly. Alex
9. Depends entirely on the specific cabs and how they work together - suck it and see! Alex
10.
Yes. I particularly love Invitation and Heavy Weather.
And both the live and studio versions of The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines. Amazing grooves. Alex
11. Yes. I particularly love Invitation and Heavy Weather. Alex
12. Ade, am just sorting out increased production because right now the waiting time is getting longer and longer and longer... So once that's sorted you can give one a whirl - if you're willing to take responsibility for it then I'm quite happy to extend the trial period if you'd like to pass it round players in your area - I seriously doubt it'll end up coming back anyway, the combination of tone, loudness, fatness and lightness is quite intoxicating. Then if you don't want it but someone else does then they can pay you directly and we'll make them officially the original owner, or if you want to keep it but so do others then I'll get additional models sent directly to them. The cab I strongly recommend to most players is the Compact. If you're willing to spend more and accept moving a larger heavier cab then the Big One is better in every way but it seems most players are willing to compromise a little on tone for a cheaper smaller solution (which still has better tone than anything else they've ever used!) Have also started work on a modular PA system for DJs and bands. Should be righteously fat and loud and will continue the theme of hilarious lightness. Alex
13. Stop it, stop it, stop it! After years of using such low sensitivity cabs that only the biggest (and thus heaviest) valve heads were capable of pushing them, the cabs I now build are plenty sensitive enough to distress my guitarist with only a wee Bassman pushing them. Maybe I need to look into building heads too... Alex
14. Be quite a formidable pairing that! Alex
15. It's been run in but not had a chance to get packed up yet, will definitely be on its way tomorrow. Very pleased with the finish, practice makes perfect! Alex
16. £675?!! I'm glad I didn't see that... Alex
17. I'm rather curious now... Alex
18. They do look cool - and they're made by one of my drummer's mates! Alex
19. I have no idea how to embed this but here's a relatively recent 'singing' and playing attempt by myself: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=48498036851 Alex P.S. That's my RIM Custom 5 though Avalon U5 (and Barefaced Compact + PA). Fat!
20. I used to think it was impossible. Then I tired of failing to find a singer for my band so started doing it myself. I'll never be a great singer but I do have a weird ability to pull off nasty syncopations on the bottom whilst singing vaguely in tune. I think being able to play the drums helps. Now I was going to embed an video of said singing and playing but I'm damned if I can work out how to do it with facebook videos... Alex
21. I think Anthony Jackson played quite a lot of stuff in C tuning back when he was doing those legendary Chaka Khan sessions. Alex
22. All my favourite bassists played Fenders yet I've never owned one, nor even a cheap copy. Then again, they didn't have much choice back then did they? Alex P.S. I do actually like Fenders, though as with all brands it is dangerous to tar all products with the same brush (be it good or bad).
23.
It is very simple and indeed pertinent to the subject under discussion. Volume. You are never going to use gigging volumes in a music shop. I can confirm this from my own personal experience. I had an EBS mini stack and I know that at larger venues it farted out. But when I did an A/B against the Genz Benz cabs I use now, in two different shops, we could not get the volume up to a level where the EBS farted.
Exactly. This is why I think my direct sales with a trial period approach is a damn sight more useful than trying gear out in a shop. Within reason you can EQ any half-decent cab to get whatever sound you want but once you hit high SPL then you run into the limits and two cabs that sound near identical at low volumes can turn out to be radically different at performance volumes. Alex
24.
I know the Eminence won't be up to par with the Eden driver, but I was hoping it would be easier to obtain quickly...
It's not that the Eminence isn't up to par with the Eden, it's just a very different type of woofer. In fact the Eminence is far better at lows than the Eden driver, whilst the Eden is far better at midrange. I wouldn't be comfortable mixing different woofers in a 4x10" unless they had very similar characteristics. Of the Eminence models I'd expect the Beta to be closest but without seeing the Eden's specs it could still be quite far removed. Alex
25. Good cab for the era. The folded horn worked to increase the sensitivity and power handling of the 18" woofer by providing better coupling with the air. Downside is that the folded horn also filtered out the higher frequencies and as the 18" woofer doesn't produce much higher midrange there isn't much clarity - but if you don't need that clarity then its pretty damn effective. On the other end of the frequency range the horn isn't long enough or big enough to get deep bass extension. Again, if you don't need or want lower bass then it works well. There is a long-standing myth that these horn cabs 'throw' or project the sound far into the room. They do not. However the lack of midrange and treble, particularly off-axis, makes it hard to hear these cabs up close. Same reason you hear a similar myth about conventional 18" cabs. Alex
