2. I modelled this one ages ago - IIRC you end up with an extended bass shelf alignment which needs EQing to get good bottom because the Qts is so low. Alex
3.
It was a beast, that's for sure! How much are you costing them out at, Alex? I'd be interested in a light-but-loud sometime soon!
£400 for The Compact. £625 for The Big One. However I think The Big One needs a name change because it's too small! How about The Big Sound? Alex
4.
IEMs!!
I thought IEMs might be nice solution for me as a singing bassist. Then I had to put my bass through a poxy PA at a recent rehearsal because the bass amp there was broken and I found it much harder to groove whilst singing without being able to feel the bass. When not singing it wasn't a problem but the rest of the time it was almost if my head was totally concentrating on the vocals and my body on the bass playing, right down to splitting the 'hearing' function. Weird... Alex
5. The main reasons the bass guitar replaced the double bass were that it was easier to transport and much louder. Once you add decent amplification then electronic drum kits have neither advantage over acoustic kits. Alex
6.
Your Eden isn't too heavy and you like the sound, so match it with a lighter cab and you're sorted and don't discount 15s, the 3015LF is super light and really does the business. I think it would sound good in any resonably designed cab.
With a WT800 pushing it a 3015LF will blow down walls! You're talking similar max output to an Ampeg SVT+810 rig, which as we all know is crazy loud. Alex
7. I've always enjoyed Jeff's columns but not interviews with him - the latter are just too predictable and pointless whilst when given his own space without anyone to argue with he actually talks sense. I've been disappointed by all of his music that I've heard, it's just so soulless. If I was his producer I'd put his chorus pedals in a DeLorean and send them back to the '80s. Alex
8.
I tried it with every possible eq setting and found my favourite sound with bass - 7, mid - 3, treble - 2.
I'd have thought for your sound you'd have wanted 10,0,0! Have you tried getting your sound on the bass by using a much bigger capacitor on the passive tone knob? I tried an LH500 yesterday at the Bash and was very impressed - fantastic tone for the money and plenty loud. Love the super simple control layout too. Alex
9. Have you already bought the drivers? Alex
10. Has dubious musical taste and terrible tone... Not bad at the old jazz soloing though! Alex
11. What a great day! Sad I missed the other talks because I was too carried away seeing how my cabs worked with the multitude of amps there - yes, that rumble coming through the wall was probably my fault - but I had a fantastic time and am thrilled that my own ramblings were of use, it's bit different to talking to an audience than playing a load of BritSkunk(tm) at them! Everyone was so cool, but we are bass players, what do you expect? (Can you imagine it working as well with drummers, guitarists, or heaven forbid - singers!!?) Alex P.S. CK - am attempting to defeat my Shuttle GAS - fortunately have just listened to a new gig recording where my tone was pretty damn righteous - but it's soooo small and cute and loud and fat, etc etc etc...
12. What were your EQ settings on the LH1000? Alex
13.
John East needs to use a really transparent rig to demonstrate his pre-amps tomorrow and I have asked Bernie Goodfellow if he can bring an EBS combo for that, which he said was cool.
He can use The Big One! Just listening to Cake on it and barring the last octave of treble it knocks my hi-fi into a cocked hat. I have created a monster... Alex
14. Currently listening to Willie Weeks on Everything is Everything through the first of The Big Ones. BAD ASS! Alex
15. If you're used to Alembic electronics then the sound of the Q-Tuners won't surprise you. It's the extended and uncoloured sound that can be achieved through raising the resonant frequency above the working range of the instrument. Alembic do it with low impedance pickups and active electronics. Q-Tuners do it with a very cunning high impedance and high output passive pickup - I have no idea how this is possible but the sound is just so deep, open, uncompressed and responsive to your playing. Alex
16. They are righteous. Come to Guildford for the Bass Bash tomorrow and you can try my RIM Custom 5 with them. Alex
17.
Just as long as your RIM custom and at least one cab are there for me to [s]steal[/s] try out again
Six woofers just arrived and the first of The Big Ones is now in one piece, just needs parts fitting and handles and insulation adding! Alex
18.
There is no soul in an electric drum kit.
Absolutely. Like those new fangled electric basses. Alex
19.
Any dates on availability of the "big one"?
Not quite - I want to see how this initial production model turns out but I have the last remaining parts for the first batch on order. Alex
20. Or you could buy some used hi-fi speakers and use the Markbass into them - just be careful with the volume knob! Alex
21. An active studio monitor will be the most accurate low SPL solution and you can pick up a pair for little more than £100. Alex
22.
Zoot cabs in the 1x12 shootout in Bass Guitar Mag this month ... They came out ok
Interesting review that - left me wondering whether BGM needs a technical editor... Alex
23. How did this approach so fast?! I'm all ready for my seminar but one of my cabs has been making strange noises - horrible feeling I got some sawdust into the voice coil when breaking it in - and the other one is still half-done but I have two frantic evenings of building ahead of me! It won't be pretty but it should sound good! Alex
