If you link an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm cab in parallel (the normal way) you'll get an impedance of 2.66666 ohms. That'll be ok for the DB750 as it can work down to 2 ohms. The TH500 only works with a min impedance of 4 ohms, so you couldn't use it with that mix of cabs..
Correct!
You could get them to work together by linking the cabs with series cable which will add the impedance together and give you a 12 ohm impedance at the amp. But by doing this you'll find you need to turn the amp up further than normal to achieve your usual volume.
Although you can do this in theory it's a bad idea in practice with non-identical cabs because they'll interact in strange ways due to their differing impedance curves - imagine getting a 12 band graphic EQ and pushing the sliders about randomly and hoping it'll sound good. That kind of bad idea!
For me it's not the lack of power that's an issue, it's the added headroom that i get when i run a 4ohm cab. The low end gains a new dimention. This is very noticeable when using digital amps. IMO and IME, obviously
Which 4 and 8 ohm cabs have you compared?
-
Their cabs aren't more like 11-12 ohms - look at the graph I linked above.
Usually, most cabs aren't actually spot on 8 or 4 ohms, if I recall.
No cabs are spot on 8 or 4 ohms - it's impossible. The actual impedance curve of the RS210 is here: http://epublish.panaprint.com/publication/?i=76122 (page 67) It varies between 5 ohms and 35 ohms. That's pretty normal for an 8 ohm nominal cab. This document on the TC Electronic website states the following: ( http://cdn-downloads.tcelectronic.com/media/914735/tc_electronic_bass_amp_power_rating___active_power_management.pdf ) BH500: Min load = 2 ohms RH450: Min load = 2.66 ohms RH750: Min load = 2.66 ohms Blacksmith: Min load = 2.66 ohms It's in black and white on their website. Any three 8 ohm cabs or any 4 ohm and 8 ohm cab, or indeed a 5.3 ohm and 8 ohm cab. All that'll happen if you run it below the minimum load anyway (unless you're extremely unlucky or doing something really stupid) is that it'll shut down to protect itself - modern amps are clever like that.

Barefaced dilemma - Retro vs Compact UPDATED
alexclaber replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'll get out the notebook, put a pencil behind my ear and get to work.
Not quite as punk as this: And definitely not as punk as this: But seriously, don't underestimate the ability of your hands to control your sound by how you play your bass - if it isn't growling enough dig in more or pluck/pick closer to the bridge. If you use a pick all the time, try fingers or vice versa. Don't forget you have a thumb too - and fingernails. Power to the hands!!! -
Or stick a nice warmth/dirt/overdrive pedal in front of the Puma!
-
It isn't the AB vs D power stage that's the big difference, it's the preamps. My first choices of lightweight amps which sound more like the ABM would be the MB Fusion, TH500 and (late) Streamliner.
-
Generally effects loops aren't a good place to put effects. They're still useful to use on amps as preamp out and power amp in or for the rare occasion you're using rackmount line level effects but effects pedals are designed for instrument level so usually work much better between instrument and amp.
-
Just had one of these in the factory, playing through a Big Baby 2. Bridged mode. LOUD!!!
-
I just realised you have some more options with this - as I said before, if it's needing to drive the speakers hard enough to get the growl, use one cab instead of two. If one cab is still too loud then we're releasing a One10 soon but I don't think that'll be the case. If it's needing to drive the amp hard enough to get the dirt you want, then using fewer cabs and/or running a higher impedance load will make the amp work harder - so you could run a 12 ohm Two10 vs a 4 ohm Two10 and see which works better. I do think it's probably your ears though and how the room acoustics are changing as the venue fills up and how the band is playing louder (thus masking more of your tone) in the gig vs the soundcheck. It's complicated! Enjoy the hunt for consistent tone!
-
It's almost certainly the response of your ears changing at lower vs higher volumes - unless you're talking about the sound getting dirtier and more compressed when you get to crank it. Best way to test it is to play a gig with one cab where you'd normally use two - that'll push both the amp and cab harder. If that sorts the problem then I was wrong!
... but who the heck ever carries their Twin by its unique handle, eh..?
I did but consequently both my arms are now longer than each other...

One handle. About 100lbs. And 50 years old.
My guitarist is insanely jealous that my behemoth sound comes from a Polly pocket weighted rig.
The prototype Barefaced guitar cab is sitting here, I just need to finish off the electronics and fine tune a few other details...
Yeah, got it wrong, Alex commented earlier. Dunno where I dreamed that up, was sure I read it somewhere.
In the very early days of Barefaced we got a Shuttle 6.0 for two reasons: 1. I really liked how it sounded with the Compact and wanted a tiny amp of my own 2. One of the first Big Ones was causing a customer's Shuttle to do crazy things and we couldn't work out why without buying one (turns out that the icePower class D output stage doesn't like highly capacitative loads - we added a resistor to the crossover to damp the oscillation which was resulting and all was good). We still have it here because it's a useful reference point, especially as most bassists don't have 3000W of clean power in their rig, so we can use its power stage with other preamps as well as going through its own preamp.

Phil Jones amps with non-Phil Jones cabs - thoughts/experiences?
alexclaber replied to razze06's topic in Amps and Cabs
They're really good heads! Some aren't all that powerful into higher impedance loads though, with the power increasing hugely as you head towards a 2 ohm minimum load. Not cheap but proper quality! -
http://basschat.co.u...and-rack-mount/ Just sayin...
Job done!
-
As Genz are no longer in production we're often recommending the GK MB800 (Fusion or not) amps for those who want powerful yet tiny and affordable lightweight head - not heard any bad things about that combination yet.
Good call - I think I read somewhere that the GB Streamliner is the amp Barefaced use to test their cabs. If so, gotta be a good pairing.
We don't but it's a good amp! The main rig here is an Avalon U5 into a QSC PLX3002.
-
I seriously doubt many here could play a bass with a really clean pure signal.. That, in itself would be an interesting experiment..
Never had a problem doing that myself. RIM Custom 5 with passive electronics into Avalon U5 into QSC PLX 3002 into one of our Big Series cabs. Somewhat like Anthony Jackson's approach but done on the cheap (ok, not very cheap but not £££££££££££££)...
-
That said, most Barefaced users found that they had to fairly radically re-think their EQ settings when they moved to BF from other cabs.
I wouldn't say that's the case! Some do, some don't. Depends what they're coming from, what they want and what they're going to.
Barefaced are transparent and yet aggressively voiced.
You can't have "transparent" and "aggressively voiced" at the same time. If they're transparent (which the 12XN cabs are, though I'd use the word accurate) then all you hear is the sound of your fingers/bass/amp. The Stingray does have an inherently "aggressive" tone, hence what you heard!
I'm a little worried about using Markbass stuff issued in the UK in European countries.
All EU countries (and I think everywhere in the whole of Europe) is on 230V nowadays - it's no longer 240V here and 220V on the continent, so any UK Markbass stuff will be fine across the channel. (Technically we didn't actually change the voltages, we just bodged the tolerances so it could be claimed to be standardised! But everyone now designs for 220-240V +/- a bit more so it's a moot point).
Sounds like a result. Just on a pedantic note, this is a grill: This is a grille: ☺
Grille is the old spelling. Grill is the modern spelling. In British English 'grill' is the dominant form. In US English 'grille' is still the accepted form. I'm British and so are our cabs! GRILL.
