1. The S1 switch shouldn't add bottom, it should reduce treble due to the increased inductance and increase output (voltage swing doubled). A subtle difference but an important one! Alex
2. I need something to prompt me into building some speaker cabs sooner rather than later and an absence of my own cabs is bound to do that! So I think it's time for my Acmes to find new homes. They are the first run of the Series II models, both in good condition for their age (born in Aug '99) but due to their age the woofers are beginning to tire - this means that at high volumes they break up (in a rather cool vintage manner) but for the authentic Acme sound at loud gigs they could do with replacement, at a cost of $65 per woofer. Saying that, even now they put out more bottom than 90% of cabs without any nasty noises! I think £200 per cab is a fair price, they are spectacularly excellent. And they've been improved with the addition of a side strap handle each (the exact one from the Low-B1) - so if you're a real man you can carry them with one hand! (I do and I'm not terribly large). Here's one of them: Alex
3. A very rough version of a new song I introduced to the band last night (the drummer was running late, as ever) - need to get the lyrics and vocals added, obviously: http://www.thehumanzoo.com/alex/Rehearsal%...e%2029jan08.mp3 I'm doing some atypical things on this but is it unique? I doubt it - is anything unique?! Do true bass heroes do something amazing with the instrument or with the music? I suspect the latter - that's what gets you excited about them, because the songs move you. Jaco and Jimi would have never had their impact if their amazing skill with the instrument hadn't translated into amazing music. Alex
4.
What can I say..its simple Deal with it by doing something about it. I am.
I totally agree!
If you want stuff to change,or sound new or different, use something different. There IS only so much you can do with a standard 4 string Bass, and all thats been done before. Frankly its dull.
I totally disagree! But whatever you do play, get on with making music and being your own bass hero! Alex
5. One has to wonder how many more amps they'd sell if they did drop their UK prices - it seems that they're totally ignoring how weak the USD is vs GBP, and has been over more than a year. Alex
6.
Ambiguity nit pick: You would have to feed a balanced signal to the power amp's balanced input connection to have this gain benefit. Feeding an unbalanced signal to a power amp's balanced input connection point (XLR or 1/4" or whatever) is not going to give you this 6dB gain.
Good point!
Most commonly available bass guitar preamp line outs to power amps are unbalanced signals.
Really? How very poxy! My old SWR Grand Prix had balanced and non-balanced line outs as well as a balanced DI out. My Avalon U5 has two balanced line outs and two unbalanced line outs. I haven't looked at many other preamps but that might explain why some valve preamps have trouble driving QSC PLXs and the like. Alex
7.
I can't for the life of me remember where I got this from...
I think I might have written that in a rare moment of lucidity! Alex
8. With EH pedals the tolerances are so loose that you never quite know what'll work well on bass until you try it. But I've tried quite a lot of distortion/fuzz pedals over the years and nothing quite does what my Russian Big Muff does. Alex
9. Nice work! I like the way you don't need a grill with the Omni cabs - it's amazing quite how heavy and expensive a full front grill is, left me wondering if I can go with speaker cloth instead. Alex
10. Peavey Firebass or similar. Loud, solid tone, unbreakable. Alex
11. Power handling of a 4x10" cab with DeltaLite II 2510 woofers: Alex
12. Whatever you like. The thermal power rating is irrelevant and the unquoted displacement limited power rating for 99% of cabs is far lower than your amp can put out. If you hear bad sounds turn down. Alex
13.
I beg to differ that my Hartke 2x12" aluminium cone cab is a marketting trick. The sound is very different to a paper coned equivalent.
I was referring to the concept of hybrid paper/aluminium cones - 'the best of both worlds' etc. The problem with metal cone drivers in general is that they all suffer from nasty cone break up resonances, which either need to be avoided through suitable low pass filtering or you need to like the sound of that added distorted treble peak. I wonder whether the 4.5XL avoids this peak by having a full crossover between woofers and midrange. Alex
14.
it is freezing here in Galsgow, blowing a gail...
I presume you're in one of Glasgow's seedier neighbourhoods... Alex
15.
The volume between the two isn't that different cos i have quarter pounders in the jazz.. its just the stingray has the active eq on it which makes it louder when u boost the bass or treble. I think i might just plug in and let the sound guy worry...
If it's making that much of a difference to loudness then you're probably EQing too heavily. If that's definitely the sound you want, then simply pluck less hard when you have the EQ boosted. Alex
16. http://www.eminence.com/proaudio_speaker_d...mp;SUB_CAT_ID=3 One or two of these in 100 litres per woofer tuned to 50Hz will match very nicely with your amp's output and move more air than any commercial cab. You will need some kind of midrange speaker to fill in where they roll off - the most impressive performer is the Eighteen Sound 6ND410. A simple 2nd order crossover at ~800Hz is all that's needed to protect the 6ND410 and stop the woofers and mid speaker interacting negatively. Alex
17.
Wouldn't the same effect be got out of driving 2 cabinets from a head - one cab being paper, the other aluminium.
No. There's far more to a speaker than the cone material but as it's the most obvious feature to a layman this is a great marketing trick. Alex
18. If you can drive a power amp with a balanced connection then you'll gain another 6dB of gain. Alex
19. A cheaper solution would be to turn your Stingray down. Alex
20.
I thought he might do a 2x15 in the same compact fashion as a 1210 very minimal sized and with uber lows. but no...
That would require breaking too many laws of physics. Alex
21. The color button on the M80 is simply a deep midrange scoop, I've seen a plot of it somewhere though can't find it at the moment. Alex
22. If I were you I wouldn't get an SVT3 because I think they're way overpriced. I'd look at the various rackmount Ampegs preamps (if that's your preferred tone) and a lightweight power amp. If you buy used or hunt for new bargains you'll get lots more power for less money than the SVT3. The maximum dimensions are too small for a 2x15" IMO. However you could make a nice 1x15" plus midrange (I'd use the Eighteen Sound 6ND410) which would be both very light and compact enough. Alex
23.
...it's much louder than you'd think for a 150W solid state combo, especially in big rooms for some reason...
This suggests that in smaller venues you are fighting the acoustics. Get the combo backed up into a corner and then tilt it back so the 8" mid is pointed more towards your head. Try that next rehearsal, you may be pleasantly surprised! Also, where is the drummer positioning himself relative to the rest of the band? The closer he is to the guitar and bass amps, the louder he'll play. You'll get more SPL from intelligent use of acoustics than from doubling the size of your rig. Alex
24. A well designed 15" bottom is as much low end as you'll need for any indoor gig, a pair for outdoors. I modelled that PD 24" woofer a while back and was rather unimpressed - like many high power woofers it is highly damped which makes it less sensitive in the lower reaches. The only woofer I'd consider for bass guitar use is the Eminence Kappalite 3015LF - it has just the right balance of sensitivity, displacement, Fs and Qts, whilst being excellent value and very light. As a true woofer it does require a midrange speaker to take over from ~800Hz upwards. Alex
