(cab, in cm) W = 66 H = 46.5 D = 33
If that's the internal dimensions of the cab itself then that bodes very well - about 100 litres volume which is enough for decent response from many fifteens.
(Ports, in cm) L = 8 D= 6
If that's accurate (and the volume is accurate too) then the enclosure is tuned to 37Hz. With most speakers you'll get better output from a higher tuning, somewhere around 50Hz, to help out with the lows where they're really needed. You could trim down the tubes to get a higher tuning. If the enclosure's internal volume is smaller than your estimate then the ru I'm just kicking some different Eminence models around in WinISD Pro. I wouldn't set your heart on a neo speaker - the difference in the weight of a speaker isn't very much compared to a heavy combo - and they still cost more than most ceramic magnet speakers. What bass do you play? Whose tone do you like? Need some hints, you don't need to tell me what frequencies excite you just some vague adjectives or names or styles that are your bag. Alex
 2.
Tell 'em why, otherwise it looks a bit blunt.
From the Acme site: "In fact, a bass-reflex enclosure, at the frequencies where the port contributes to the system’s output, is a pressure device, as opposed to a wave device. So the interaction of the enclosure and the port, and the port's position with respect to the woofer, itself, are unaffected by any directional activity. Direction is utterly unimportant. By way of illustration, examine another pressure-related model, a balloon. As you inflate a balloon, does it expand on one direction only, or in all directions at once? The Omnidirectionality of Low Frequencies: Only after a port’s output leaves the cabinet, and enters the environment, does it assume the characteristics of a wave, one of which is direction of propagation. Direction does assume importance when speaking of waves. Only, however, at frequencies where the size of the source is large compared to the wavelength under consideration. The highest frequencies at which the port in our Low-B systems contribute to system output have wavelengths of 14 feet or so. The speakers are obviously quite small compared to these wavelengths, and the port output is omnidirectional. Again, port placement is irrelevant to system performance." Most cabs are tuned higher than their 31Hz tuning frequency - like 40-50Hz. Even tuned as high as 60Hz the wavelengths involved are longer than 7 feet and thus still omnidirectional from any port. 3.
I don't know what difference rear ported makes
It doesn't make any difference. Alex
 4.
The DB is rear ported yes? Much more sensitive to placement.
Makes absolutely no difference. Alex
 5. Sounds like a great little rig, should be plenty for an acoustic driven band and SO easy to move! I like the Markbass EQ approach, the VLE is a particularly great knob.
The Aguilar cabinet is highly sensitive though, 102db compared to 95db in the Ampeg cab...
Just to pick you up on that, unfortunately Aguilar's sensitivity spec for the GS112 is utter bs whilst the one for the Ampeg is quite accurate. This is made clear by the 212 and 412 not each being 3dB more sensitive that the smaller cab. I pointed this out to Dave Boonshoft but he's yet to do anything about it. Alex
 6.
Oh to be that young again lol
I'm 29 but recently I've kept getting ID'd, so I'm either too old or look too young! Alex
 7. Btw, the power handling of the speaker doesn't matter - any pro audio 15" is going to have more than enough power handling to cope with a 130W amp, and spare power handling just minimises the effects of power compression. Alex
 8.
Any more input? Speaker/wattage recommendations?... ... Tone comes first for me, well second after sparkly blue tuck 'n' roll - and the stock just doesn't quite cut it for me...
What about the tone of the current speaker doesn't cut it for you? Not questioning your opinion, there's just ton of 15" speakers to choose from and it would be nice to have an idea where to start! What are the internal dimensions of the enclosure? What are the port lengths and diameters (so we can calculate tuning frequency)? Alex
 9.
I do things that really stretch me...
Likewise - the only basslines I've learnt verbatim in a long time have been Jaco's. I cope other bassists's feels and ideas but rarely note for note. How about writing some material for this new band? Alex
 10. I love the weirdness of Seas Of Cheese and the unique rawk of Antipop. I have The Brown Album and Frizzle Fry but I haven't got into them yet - the latter is particularly annoying on the guitar front... Les Claypool's singing gives me hope! Alex
 11. If only you'd posted this a couple of years ago before I went to all the trouble of starting my own band I'd have been well up for this! If you have trouble finding a suitable bassist have you considered getting a guitarist and fronting the band as a singing bassist? Let me know when you're gigging, we should probably share some stages... Alex
 12.
...I'm into a lot of stuff from motown...
Have you learnt any of Jamerson's basslines? Plenty to get your teeth into there! Alex
 13. Current mixes are here: http://www.thehumanzoo.com/alex/Demo%20EP%20Session%20Cuts/ Alex
 14. Try a more balanced tension set of strings - so keep the heavy B but use a lighter E, much lighter A and D and slightly lighter G. 40-55-75-100-130 is fairly balanced. For a heavier set 45-60-80-105-135, though that's not quite so even. Compared to the usual 65 D and 85 A all B strings are floppy. Tension is directly related to scale, tuning and mass per unit length. Feel can be affected by break angles, bass construction and string stiffness, etc. Alex
 15. You could just use the top four strings from a six string set, though it's probably cheaper to order four singles. If I were doing it I'd used 30-40-55-75 which will give fairly balanced tensions. Alex
 16. Mixed down everything and had a listen back. Just a couple of tweaks to go and then we're off to mastering. Alex
 17.
...that synth bass run in Speed Demon by the other Jacko.
That makes the turnaround riff in Havona seem slow! Alex
 18.
15" I DON'T find to be very directional & find that their sound can OFTEN be/seem louder if U stand NEXT to it-meaning behind the actual spkr cone-just alongside it!
A couple of facts: A source is fully directional (beaming) when the wave length <= diameter of the source. A source is considered fully spherical (omnidirectional) when wave length > 4x diameter of the source. Therefore the bigger the speaker, the lower the beaming limit.
But a 15"s sound wave will be a few metres long & so U actually get the WHOLe sound U R putting out a fair way from the spkr.
You get the whole sound immediately at the speaker diaphram. If you had to be a wavelength away from a sound to hear it then headphones could not work. This is a common misconception due to boundary effects (null zones) and directionality. Alex
 19. There is definitely a lot to be said for tall slim and relatively lightweight cabs that can be easily wheeled about yet are light enough to pick up on your own. The Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 15TB that I'll be building next year is 2" shorter, 1" narrower, and the same depth as the Tech 6x10" and should weigh only about 5lbs more. Parts will cost about £250 but then I've got to build it! Alex
 20. Note for the future - do not post recordings of unfinished products online as negative feedback about the vocals when I'm singing as best as I can is utterly demoralising... However have finally picked myself up and finished the vocals on and mixed down two of the four songs. Alex
 21.
Sound clips?
That's a bit of a funny one - it just sounds like whatever bass you're playing! Not like so many amps/preamps which make instruments sound much more similar through them. Mine didn't arrive in time for the recording I'm just finishing but I'll be using it on the next EP. In the meantime, basstasters.com has a whole host of different basses recorded through the U5 and lots of other preamps to compare it with: http://www.basstasters.com/preamps/Avalon_U5.html (You'll want to listen to the clips without any effects or cabs in the signal chain.) Alex
 22. I always try to take recording gear to gigs and rehearsals - usually just my digital camera which has a fairly decent mic for notepad use. We tend to work on jams and then once we're happy with the new material we record it - this does mean we miss out on the magic of the first jam but it saves trawling through tons of rubbish hay to find the needle of quality. I do regret not recording the first jam we had on a new thang I've written - it was almost as stupidly funky as this live rendition of 'Chicken Grease': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4XI6LXCsH8 Alex
 23. Yes, it's Lakeland, not Lackland. Alex
 24. Get rid of the Behringer, their speakers have an appalling reliability record. Regarding your rig reaching full power when the volume control is only halfway up, this is the norm with most amps. If you had a particularly quiet bass then you'd be able to turn up 'louder' but the power and volume level from the amp would still max out at the same point. 15" speakers are very directional - point it at your head and it will seem a lot louder. Also position your cab either very close or very far from any walls, otherwise the sound bouncing off the walls could cancel out the output in the lows and low mids. Alex
 25. I am getting inordinately excited about this - I mean, it's just a bass but it feels like a baby that's been gestating for years! Alex
