That's cool, but sometimes I like to rock out with my bass guitars as well
Oh it'll definitely rock out too. That's all the first customer example does! I'll be interested to see how light this cab ends up - I've always been a fan of composites, did my degree thesis on them.

Hi Jon, No we won't. Too busy building/designing cabs and too frugal (some may say stingy) to pay for exhibitor space! Alex

Nice concept, should work well! I would suggest that the Big One was sufficiently light that the size was the bigger issue - 41lbs isn't exactly hard work to move. I'd also suggest that if you're using a double bass the Big Baby is going to be easily loud enough - give it some real power and it kicks out as much bottom as a good 4x10" - which takes the weight down to 33lbs and it's much smaller too. As cool as a transparent cab would be in theory, you have to take into account that any properly designed cab will be thoroughly lined with damping material, which isn't terribly pretty. Like having a transparent ceiling in your upstairs rooms - do you really want an unhindered view of your loft insulation? The exception is long folded horn subs - they don't need damping because the folds act as a lowpass filter, and they would look really cool with all that complicated enclosure on show!

Yes, absolutely. You can run one channel at the minimum nominal load and the other at the maximum load (i.e. nothing plugged in) or something like a 16 ohm guitar cab or even a super high impedance pair of studio headphones.

Ooh, exciting! And that's one of the loudest fattest 4x10"s around.
Well I just ordered an Acme Low B-1, and I'll be ordering another one in a month or so. It seems that nothing else can compete with them for clarity and 'lowness'.
Great! As I said in my email, if you want the depth and clarity of the B2 in a smaller package there's no other option. I wanted that depth and clarity but louder and look what I ended up doing...
This could be completely irrelevant but - I was playing a pub gig recently and using the same settings as with other gigs etc but it sounded like i was getting some distortion (harsh rasping tone) when we did a sound check. Now I always listen out front without ear protection when we do the sound check and it did sound harsh - however when i put my earplugs (etimotic thingies) in it revealed that everything was absolutely fine (simply too loud for the space)...my point being that it is sometimes very difficult to tell whats going on when playing at very high volumes as the human ear starts to give up and compress everything to noise with some frequencies becoming more prevelant than others.. and yes we did turn it down! I realise that's probably not what's going on here but where the human ear is concerned i have noticed that when you turn things up they dont just simply get louder.
I had this happen at a gig at Koko in Camden. I'd forgotten my ER15 earplugs, the support act were loud but just about ok. When the main act came on the volume went up sufficiently that my ears totally fuzzed out - I could only hear the music by putting my hands over my ears. Cue some impromptu tissue paper earplugs!
Re your quick fix: By putting the cab in the corner I will get lots more volume for the power - is that your point?
Kind of - more volume in the lower omnidirectional frequencies, see Sept '10 article: http://barefacedbass.com/bgm-columns.htm Definitely check for spurious vibrations too! If you crank up everything on the amp and play loud does the clip/limit LED light? There's a tiny chance it's not working.
-
Yes, I'm looking forward to it too!

Just uploaded a bunch of Bass Guitar Magazine articles: http://barefacedbass.com/bgm-columns.htm

Bit of a delay on the tour front, people keep wanting to buy these things! Will update shortly...
Yep, I guessed the 400 was a thermal limit, but I'm not, theoretically, even getting close to half of that. Is it likely that a 400W (thermal limit) cab actually only has, say, a 100W excursion limit?
Unfortunately yes. But was the Shuttle clipping? If you keep pushing it after the clip/limit LED comes on then the power amp will eventually distort. Cutting your lows will reduce the demands on the driver but it'll also reduce the demands on the power amp, so that alone won't tell you where the problem lies. A quick fix is to stick the cab right in the corner of a room, preferably with solid (not stud) walls behind.

I think I'll have to write an entire separate section correlating everyone else's tech specs to the Barefaced ones. Kudos to Ampeg for being on the money with theirs - some others are completely barking mad!
-
I've made a start on the tech specs explanation: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-informa...-tech-specs.htm Section 1 done. Let me know if it does/doesn't make sense!

That makes a lot more sense, thanks Gadge!
Not sure what this bullet means:
Yes, for some reason the CMS has put bullet points where there should be numbers, so point 1 should correspond to explanation 1, etc. I shall attempt to do something clever whereby when you click on point 1 you get explanation 1 appearing below, like in the FAQ. But that will have to wait...

Good points about both bits. Have just rewritten the "Why Barefaced?" page - let me know what you think! http://barefacedbass.com/why-barefaced.htm
Me being a complete úber geek I thought I'd calculate the total cone areas of each cab.... 2x10" - 157 square inches 2x12" - 226 1x15" - 177 Looks like the 2x12 will shift some air !!!
You're halfway there! You need to figure in that the nominal cone size (i.e. 10", 12" or 15") isn't the diameter of the radiating area (which is about 1.5" smaller) - consequently the smaller the woofer, the less accurate your cone area calculation is. The second issue is that to move air you need a third dimension, the distance the speaker can move back and forth. More here: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-informa...isplacement.htm (please ignore the sales spiel, you can buy what you want, just read the facts as they apply to every moving cone loudspeaker!)
Did that White piping ever turn up Alex?
Yes! If you can operate a staplegun then I'll send you some.

Or to put it another way, I'm updatING the site, I haven't updatED it!

The really big obvious things aren't typos! Updating the graphics is the complicated bit...
-
I'm finally updating the site with the new models and rewriting some of the content based on learnings from the last few years. Some of it's a first draft but let me know if you see any typos hiding or if any of my writing simply doesn't make sense! http://www.barefacedbass.com
+1...this is the only way to see if you like it!
Yes indeed. Have you tried a Super Twelve?
-
Ah. OK, so what you save in super-lightweight cabs, you make up with super heavy poweramps.
Which would be a very good point if the main design goal of the Big One was minimum weight - but it wasn't!
