Are we talking totally unuseable without a crossover, or fine for dub sounds with no pick and fret noise?
With the lowpass filter about 800Hz, without about 1.5kHz. Totally fine for dub sounds either way, could probably even cover most flatwound sounds without the filter. Alex
 2.
The picture on the website is a bit misleading: http://barefacedbass.com/vintage.htm
Duly removed! That was a one-off sideways silver-cloth front Compact. The Vintage is the big 2x15" as seen on this thread! The website is seriously in need of new photos but recent weather conditions have not been exactly photogenic... Alex
 3.
whats the current wait time on the vintage?
Have two unreserved from this batch, just waiting on grill cloth to arrive to get them finished. Alex
 4. Thanks for the comprehensive post René! Simple answer - I'm pretty certain T'Midget will do the job for you, as you have a properly powerful amp in the GK1001, so you can get every last dB out of its very potent 12" driver. If you find it's not loud enough then you can add a second Midget, or if you find you're always boosting your lows when using T'Midget (and you're wanting more loudness) then you can add a Compact which will give you more of the same plus some added bottom. This probably sounds ridiculous but according to my sums a single Midget should be able to produce as much high SPL bottom as the Hydrive 4x10". But how?! The Midget's driver is likely to have about twice as much excursion, so its Vd is about as much as three out of the four tens in the Hydrive. And then because the Hydrive is a sealed cab it doesn't have a port helping share the air movement between 40 and 100Hz. So if the Hydrive speakers are similar to Eminence's aluminium cone woofers the Midget would beat it on max SPL from 85Hz down to 40Hz. I really don't get why Hartke have gone with sealed cabs for their new models as that approach only works well with bass guitar for low SPL applications (like the Acoustic Image combos) or with very large cabs (8x10"/6x10"/4x12"/2x15"). Then again I guess it'll have saved them some cost on their neodymium purchases... Miaow. Alex P.S. I do think the 4.5XL was a great design, nice work with that one Larry!
 5.
My bass port points diagonally at the floor because I have a Mesa Boogie wedge combo and the port is on the 45 degree angle bit underneath (does that make sense?) I know the Auralex blocks will isolate mechanical vibrations from a wooden floor but do you have any idea how much that will be negated because the port is firing bass vibrations just inches from that same floor?
The downfiring port will be little or no worse than the acoustic output from the woofer(s) or any other port, when it comes to acoustically exciting the floor. Bass vibrations don't get 'fired' so much as they swell outwards like a massive expanding balloon, they're very big waves indeed! Alex
 6.
How many would I need with two BF Compacts and a MB SA450 sitting on top? I've been toying with the Auralex idea for a while but hate the idea of carrying yet something else.
One pair will be fine. Alex
 7.
Hmm I like the idea... where can I order them?
Email me! [email protected] Alex
 8.
The finish inside the bottom ports seems quite poor and perhaps should match the exterior finish.
Just been speaking to one of my people - we were using matt paint inside the port, now we're using gloss. So it does look better now. Alex
 9.
What texture do you need?
The same as on the outside would be ideal. Alex
 10.
Yes, I can see how applying the finish may be an issue, perhaps applying that small area before assembling the cab might work
That's what I'm leaning towards. Alex
 11. Four-ish words: Won't fit, wrong texture. It's a pain. Any other suggestions? Alex
 12.
I just think that by finishing the last two or three inches with the same exterior material would do the trick with minimal extra cost
Indeed, though it isn't a cost issue, it's the challenge of getting the finish into the port once it's built as it's quite a narrow space. Alex
 13. No-one's commented on the finish inside the port before but I'll have a think about that and see if there's a better way of doing it. Alex
 14. I'm not convinced the Simms will have enough power for the Compact but you never know, so it's probably worth gambling the return postage on finding out. The Vintage should be absolutely righteous with either head, though I dread to think how loud you'll need to go if you want power tube overdrive! Alex
 15. I'd run them front to back unless you're using them to tilt the cab. With a lighter rig I believe these will work better than a GRAMMA as their smaller csa means there's more give, so the reduced mass of a lightweight rig is more proportional to the blocks' compliance. Alex
 16.
1). Tonally - Clean and clear from the cab is the order of the day, the GK adds a bit of growl of its own, but I prefer a solid sound with no speaker 'flub' (yep, technical term there) and sometimes the Nemesis feels like it's struggling (although it could be the amp)
My guess is that you're getting a bit of both reaching their limits - I doubt the Nemesis can handle the full 300W in the lows but conversely I doubt you're always keeping within the amp's limits. The GK growl does seem to work well with my inherently clean sounding cabs, gives them some grrr that can be required.
2). Music - Covers, all sorts...80's synth pop through to Kings of Leon and all points in between really. That said, I don't really try to emulate the sounds, rather stick with my own tone. 3). Basses - Both passive, one Jazz style (main axe) and one Precision style. Neither are particularly high output 4). Tweeter - Tends to be set at about 2 or 3 out of 10 as I found it too clicky and scratchy. Not sure I'd really miss it if it wasn't there.
My gut feeling is that you don't really need a tweeter but I'd be more certain if you named/linked some tunes where you think "yes, that's my kind of bass sound" so I can have a listen and double-check. However it's all futile it you don't have enough power, as unless you're willing to cart a BIG cab then you'll need more power than you currently have to get enough loudness with one of the Barefaced stable. If you can pick up a GK700 or 1001 cheap then I think a D.M. would do a storming job. I think the Compact would beat your current rig with an amp like that pushing it but it sounds like you play LOUD so the extra output of the D.M. would be worth having. I don't think it's worth rushing a small change, better to hold off longer until you can make a big leap and then stop thinking about amplification for the next decade. Alex
 17.
. . . . ermm maybe I should've been a little more explicit. I wouldn't know how to measure each cabs loudness - but - I play in rock bands usually using a Trace AH 250. Seldom turn up more than 3 with either cab. I'm having loads of trouble dialling in a beefy sound with the 4x10, but the 1x15 does it for me every time - is it louder? - not too sure - gonna continue to work with the 4x10 though. Just to mention - the 4x10 is the 'RS' version where the 1x15 is the older version.
Well the obvious way to measure loudness (i.e. sensitivity) is to swap directly between cabs without moving any of the knobs on your amp. That doesn't tell you how loud the cabs will go because one will run out of power handling before the other, so the cab that is less sensitive (loud) may go louder because it farts out later. However our perception of loudness is affected by how clean the cab is (more distortion equals louder), how trebly/midrangey the cab is (more of that equals louder) and of course what we put into it (a bass with lots of low mids will make a low-midrangey cab sound louder than a cab which is scooped in the low-mids but louder elsewhere in the spectrum). I don't know if Eden have always used the same drivers on the Nemesis cabs - if they haven't then that could make a huge difference to the results. The RS cabs don't use the compressed composite construction so if they've tried to save weight to make up for that by using speakers with smaller magnets then that will have a direct effect on sensitivity, particularly in the midrange. Alex
 18.
So 4 would be £20 + £5 P&P?
Yes, good sums! Alex
 19. When you say 'the black cover on the driver', do you mean the dome in the middle of each cone (usually called the dustcap)? If that's loose it will vibrate against the cone and cause annoying buzzing sounds and it will also hiss/whistle/chuff as the driver goes back and forth and internal pressure causes air to rush in and out through the gap between dustcap and cone. You can usually glue dustcaps back on fairly easily but I'm not sure what kind of adhesive you'd need to bond with the aluminium and the paper and have suitable flex characteristics. Alex
 20.
Have you thought about one of the Nemesis 1 x 15? I've got the 1 x 15 and the 4 x 10 and I reckon the 15 trumps the 4x10 hands down! Very manageable also.
Is the Nemesis 15" as loud as the 4x10"? I'll be really surprised if it is! Alex
 21. With your current amp a Compact definitely won't be loud enough. The D.M. will be similar in max SPL to your Nemesis when driven by your amp but it'll be a close run thing. The Vintage will beat the Nemesis but you could probably guess that from its size! Double or triple the power you have to play with and it'll be a different story with even the Compact likely to play louder and cleaner than the Nemesis. Eden make loud cabs and size for size they match mine when driven with lower power amps - it's when you have more power to play with that when the difference becomes clear but unless you go for a bigger cab and/or a more powerful amp you're not going to get any louder. Tonally, what kinds of sound do you go for? What music are you playing? What bass(es) do you usually play? Do you use that bit of tweeter on the Nemesis to get those extended tweetery highs or is it just to help you cut through and hear yourself? Alex
 22. End on end would be quite a narrow footprint for such a tall and relatively heavy stack, so I think I'd want to double up on them to prevent wobbling. Alex
 23. If you're buying a Barefaced cab I now have 0.5m long Speakon-Speakon and 1/4"-Speakon cables available for £10 each. They're so short because Barefaced cabs have the Speakon socket right at the top, and the lack of length means a lighter gauge can be used with equal performance to a longer thicker cable. If you just want a cable, go to Dave/OBBM at http://www.bassic.co.uk for one of his fine cables but if you're buying a cab from me then I'm happy to supply a suitable lead or two. Alex
 24. I now have lots of these in stock. 12"x4"x2" - two for £10, £5P&P (obviously zero P&P if you're getting a cab at the same time). They're made of Auralex PlatFoam (as used on the GRAMMA). Two are sufficient to float a rig up to about 150lbs in weight, and thus mechanically isolate it from wooden stages/floors. If you want to tilt your cab back yet still isolate it then use one 2" high at the back and one 4" high at the front, or use one 4" high at the front to tilt and partially isolate. Keep them in your gigbag with your bass, they'll fit neatly next to its neck and they weigh almost nothing. Handy problem solvers, you never know when they'll come in useful! Email us at [email protected] if you want some. Alex
