To Futher My 3yr Run Of Bad Luck

If pianoers and drummists can gig sitting down I don't see why we can't! What you need is an epic gig throne of doom. Alex -
Effect on through body stringing on string tension
alexclaber replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
That could be correct but the difference might well be too small to make any noticeable difference.
Depends on the saddle shape/material - some exhibit a greater change in friction than others. Most of it's in everyone's heads - you only have to read the gloriously flawed leaps of logic in most magazine reviews to see that it's a common problem though! Alex -
Effect on through body stringing on string tension

Thru-body stringing increases the break angle, thus reducing movement over the bridge witness points. Alex -

WTF?!! http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_amps_de...=09102210344048 I'd consider buying that and I build bass cabs! Alex
I think the point about SPL is that plenty of speakers can only handle about 25% of the rated power in the lows before they run out of excursion. That means the tone you'll get at shop/bedroom volumes can be very different to the tone you'll get when you turn up the wick.
Exactly! Getting good tone at low SPL is easy - keeping that good tone at high SPL is a different matter. For me, tone comes first, then SPL, then size/weight. Alex
I doubt that is a fair comparison as the latter are Name companies with R&D and retail overheads. If you are paying a price direct, then that ads up to a lot of money for a 15" and you really need to see quailty in terms of sound and manufacture then.
That's a very good point regarding the retail overheads (though I could argue my R&D overheads are greater having seen how some cabs are 'designed' ). If you take a Compact and a competing 1x15" apart you'll soon see where the extra cost goes, not least of which is in the driver itself.
As with all these things. you need to see and hear what you want to play in context...
I totally agree, hence the free trial. What music shop gives you the chance to play loud against a drummer and guitarist so you know how a cab really performs? There are plenty of bass cabs that sound very nice at shop SPL but how many smaller cabs can maintain that tone as SPL increases? Alex

The most important thing is to have enough open area in the grill but most cabs have that. More common acoustic issues seen in bass cabs are grills over undersized ports which causes nasty air noise problems, and badges in front of tweeters or midrange speakers (a heinous crime!) Alex
I'd say it's worth scheduling two Barefaced days right now this week to sort your site.
It would be nice if that was currently an option! Alex

I need to change all the photos and quite a lot of the text but there are only so many hours in the day! I'll let y'all know when I think I've done everything and then you can go forth and spot my mistakes... Alex

It'll be a reversable mod but if the slope and frequency of the internal passive crossover is different to the active crossover on the GK then it'll make the cab sound different. Alex
I'd love to hear your opinion about versatility. I love old school but I like the idea to have some crisp highs in case I need to. E.g. maybe I should look better at 1 or 2 Big Ones, but also the idea of a vintage might work... if the vintage had one of those 6.5" small speaker in somehow a 4 ohm cab (and would even prefer a normal metal grill instead of cloth), I think i would seriously consider it...
Shockwave is getting the first T'Vintage, so a 2x15" with an additional tweeter. With it off the exact same tone as the Vintage, with it on lots of tweetery brightness and sheen. Am happy to do any of the cabs (bar possibly a cloth grill T'Midget) with a metal or cloth grill now - have found a neat manufacturing solution for it! Alex
Like putting in a picture of an actual Vintage!
They have an awful habit of being sold as soon as they're finished! Hoping for an opportunity to photograph a Vintage and a Midget on Monday though... Alex
I'd suggest you first get your website sorted out with your new design and incorporating all the updates and changes suggested on here first. When was that? 6 months ago? The other thing to do is to create a section of brilliant images and stats and quotes and history for journo's to use.. like Ashdown do in their press area
Website has been swapped, just lots of editing and expanding for me to do now. Good idea about the press area, will put one of those together! Alex

Find the bass that sounds the best unplugged, then stick a better pickup in if it isn't as toneful when plugged in. Alex

Bargain bargain bargain! Damned good amp. I had the smaller s/s only version, the Sessionbass, liked it very much. Couldn't afford the T-Max sadly... Alex
Any chance of some reviews of The Big One from the guys that have tested it?
My thoughts exactly! Who's used it so far and failed to report back? Come on, come on... Alex
You will be amazed at what a modern lightweight little cab can do .. Talk to Alex at Barefaced about your needs and desires (in a bass sound way of course )
Thought lightweight yet big is often more satisfying! The main issue with 18" bass guitar cabs is the enclosures are rarely big enough for the 18" to work well - in fact most would perform better with a high quality 15" in the same enclosure. Alex
I have one which I bought to clips handily onto the stand mount of my NS CR5M upright. Its not very good for locking onto the pitch of the B string as I have to put it into chromatic mode - the Bass mode only does E-A-D-G. It gets there in the end, but is slow & frustrating to use as the virtual needle jumps about all over the place.
The clip-on one will work much better if clipped onto the instrument so it picks up the vibrations more strongly.
The gigs on Thursday 29th at Barnsley.
I'll get one out to your for then! Alex
If you want to send one to me I'm playing a gig next week with a death metal band and I'll be using my Compact with no PA support, that should give the Compact/Midget rig a good try.
What date's your gig? Alex
-
I wish I'd taken one instead of the Big One to my last gig - as we had a big PA with subs I didn't need to fill the room with lows, so the Midget would have done as good a job, just without the need to cut the lows on the amp. Would have had excellent comic effect against the giant Mesa 1516 everyone else was using! Alex
-
Need to get some more Midgets out there to get pushed to their limits! I think this could be the first production 1x12" that can actually hang in a RAWK band. Alex
That's not exactly right Alex, the note choice when held in balance with rhythm and technique is possibly more evenly distributed than with other styles of music. But to say they don't really matter is a bit misleading.
Well you know what I mean! I'd focus on getting the 16th note pulse happening, getting the feel for muting and ghost notes, work the root and octave and then start using parts of the minor pentatonic. Just feel your way into it. Once you've got that feel internalised then have a go at more stripped lines where you hardly play anything but still manage to imply that feel. Alex
