I am sorry that you are out of pocket by £40 but if you would have returned it without repairing it we would have been able to have refunded or exchanged it. However under the circumstances we would not be able to re-sell or return it to Fender and would therefore be out of pocket by the same amount.
Well that's not true for starters, unless they're running a unique zero profit margin business model... Alex
 2.
Plus - and I know what a big draw this is for you all - you'll get to meet me.

I now have 15 places available due to some sudden cancellations...
3.
The rattling sound I refer to is the sound of the windings catching inside the armature of the speaker.
That's the result of a toasted voice coil, which is caused by too much continuous power. Doesn't matter if it's clean power or dirty power - in fact the only toasted voice coil I've had was from too much clean power.
Speakers have an RMS rating for wattage. This presumes a sinewave.
Actually it doesn't. The rating is done using a bandwidth limited pink noise signal (typically 50-500Hz for a woofer) with a 6dB crest factor. A speaker rated at 200W has handled an average power of 200W for a number of hours, with peaks of up to 800W. Alex

 5.
The problem is essentially that our next gig is an halloween affair at a rugby club...
In that case throw all the acoustic advice out of the window. Alex
 6.
Good grief, I had to do a double take there! The weights with your new composite ply are ridiculously low.
You do realise that I've gone metric don't you? Kilos not pounds and all that... Alex
 7. If it ain't broke... If you're using it in quite a small room, if you have the option try it in different positions to get it to work best with the room acoustics. Also don't be afraid of fairly radical tweaking on the graphic - you may need to cut the bottom few sliders by a large amount to compensate for room gain and standing waves, which would otherwise make the sound horribly boomy. A 4x8" will suffer the same problems. If you're never going to need to use it at war volumes against a drummer then the one other combo I'd suggest is the PJB Bass Briefcase. It sounds lovely, it just doesn't go very loud. They occasionally pop up secondhand on here. Alex
 8. Tom's right, that's really tall - I second the suggestion of turning the Marshall on its side before stacking the Ampeg on top, unless that really doesn't sound right to you. Alex P.S. If you need some feet I have quite a few* here which I could send for the cost of the postage. * Understatement of the year...
 9. Put whichever you prefer the midrange/treble of on top, and just add some thicker feet or a wooden spacer (a plank!) to stop the wobble. Stacking is much better than side-by-side because you reduce reflections off the ceiling and floor, improve dispersion left to right, and get a more accurate picture of your tone to your ears (rather than to your knees). If you acquire a more powerful head bear in mind that the Marshall will start distorting in the lows long before the 410HLF does, so if you have it on the bottom of the stack you'll be at greater risk of blowing it (because you won't be able to hear it complaining). With your current amp you should be pretty safe. Alex
 10.
We play in a lot of old country mansions and the power circuits in those places are mainly shot to pieces..... connect up lighting and audio equipment and you can hear the ground loops/earthing hums, spikes from white goods elsewhere in the buildings..... we have a heavy duty power conditioner with several outlets (16 amp in total which is more than enough) that gives us a steady, clean power.
That sounds like a better use of a power conditioner. Does it actually regulate the power or is it just a higher current version of the usual filtering things? Alex
 11.
That's interesting about the raised carpeted floor. I've only rehearsed with it a few times on a (non-raised!) carpeted floor and still kicks out loads of power and is clean as a whistle.
I'm guessing that the clean deep but not terribly big or fat lows are getting eaten up by the hollow floor. This problem would happen with any cab but it's more obvious with the PJB because it's quite clean and transparent sounding yet can't go massively loud to compensate for the bass suck-out. As ever, two matched cabs will be radically louder than one and would probably solve this problem. A cheaper solution is to try to put the cab somewhere else or isolate it from the hollow stage. Alex
 12.
Hmm, thanks, maybe something a bit smaller is necessary!
You don't need to go smaller, just lighter! Alex
 13. For all those who've been clamouring for specs, here's a big sheet of them! Alex
 14. This is it: http://www.amazon.com/Fingerstyle-Funk-Fra...a/dp/B0000633EX The notes don't really matter, it's about how and when you hit the strings! Alex
 15.
By the way, how's that going?
Shouldn't be long now... Alex
 16. Now THAT is what that cab was made for! Alex
 17. Having gigged the Shuttle 6.0 / Big One combo last week (bloody marvellous!) I'm fascinated to find out what the 9.0 can do with my cabs. Should be some righteous high volume tone! Alex
 18. Any amp worth buying will be able to handle the power in the UK without a so-called conditioner. In fact if you use a high power amp a 'conditioner' is likely to cause a bottle-neck in the supply due to insufficient current capacity, thus causing worse performance and no better protection than if you plugged into a cheap surge-protected 4-way extension lead. Alex
 19.
Hey Alex, when are you going to put us out of our (gurning) misery and announce the winner?
I guess it should be the end of the 2009 - so a post-Xmas prize! Alex
 20. How slow is slow? Most of my favourite basslines are in slower songs. Sir Psycho Sexy is a nice one. Donny Hathaway - Live, is just one great slow bassline after another. As is D'Angelo - Voodoo. Alex
 21.
More importantly though, I'm a bit concerned that you'd prefer the Midget to be used vertically. Is that because of the co-axial tweeter dispersion (if fitted)? I can't see anyone stacking a Compact/Midget that way, especially as the dimensions suit horizontal stacking.
No, the Midget will work fine any way round - I just don't want to encourage people to sit such a small cab on its side on the floor - great for any rodents at your gig, not so good for humans to hear!
While I'm on, is it possible to fit a fabric grill to the Midget?
Yes, it certainly is. I haven't managed to work out how to combine a fabric grill and the coax tweeter though - if someone really really wants that combination I'm sure I'll find a solution...
There's a picture of the Compact/Midget stack on the S.E. Bass Bash Photo Thread. Did anyone try it out at the Bash? I'd be very interested to hear some feedback on the pairing.
We did give it a whirl - I liked it, but I would say that! It didn't seem as 'nice' as the two Compacts but I think it would really perform once there's a noisy guitar holder present. Alex
 22. Fingers, no pedals. And I swear the all the settings, bar possibly the volume and gain, were left exactly the same as the owner had them. The valve drive section was switched in, and by the sound of it there was some compression going on. As you can imagine I have quite high standards when it comes to tone so it takes a lot to impress me! I didn't like to tell him it's probably the best tone he'll ever get in his entire gigging life and that it'll all be downhill from here... Alex
 23.
Where are you going to put the feet? If the feet are on the bottom then the badge should be placed in the same orientation.
I'm putting the feet on the bottom and on the side opposite the handle, and doing the same on all future Compacts - more convenient for carrying them. Alex
