The AP analysers pretty much automate this time of measurement. For example you can set it to do a THD measurement vs power out (for a specified load) at a specified spot frequency, start the measurement and it'll stimulate the amplifier, measure it's output, and spit out a table of THD values. Tests done by me would have been at 1KHz into a nominally purely resistive load.
I was just puzzled that you referred to reaching 40% on the master volume causing THD to rapidly increase, and then your 240W figure suggests you took the position of this control and multiplied it by the claimed 600W rating to state the amp produces 240W. Or did you measure the amp into a 4 ohm load and find that THD increased rapidly once the RMS output voltage reached 31V? Alex P.S. THD is Total Harmonic Distortion. Pro power amps tend to have their output power rated at <0.1% THD. Many bass amps use 1% or even 5% THD. P.P.S. However you can't measure the output power of an amp accurately unless you can defeat any limiter circuitry.
Spot on. I bought one of the first production units of the Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. It sounded a bit rough and unpleasant on my ears at full volume, so bypassed the compressor and attempted to measure the THD on an audio precision analyser. I can't remember the figures, but it quickly shot up above about 40% volume to above 50% THD. Personally I'd class it as a 240W amplifier. I'm not knocking Genz though, I think they have to do this because their competition play the same numbers game.
Did you measure the output voltage at the same time? Alex

It's a shame the competitive nature of humankind causes us to force better/worse comparisons upon artforms and artists. Pidgeonholing and genre subdivision is another equally unfortunate trait. Ah well, at least we can blame millennia of evolution... Alex P.S. f1EldY r00Lz
The volume difference between 450W and 600W is at the margins of audibility in a real world situation.
And without knowing the THD at those power ratings the 450W amp could actually have more power than the 600W amp and thus more headroom. (And that's not a hypothetical 'might occasionally happen' suggestion, that's one of the common factors that makes some amps sound loud for their wattage and some sound quiet). Alex

1x12 vs 2x10: confused!! (plus - Laney RB7, any views on its tone etc?)
Sure, if the speaker has the facility to go higher with a twin cone arrangment, but most 15's' don't ..and certainly not the ones most used in bass rigs... so a typical 15 has a lower freq range than say, a 10...or rather a lower hi-limt.
Both those drivers I referred to are single cone drivers in production bass guitar cabs. The key difference is motor strength vs cone mass. Put a big motor on a 15" and it'll go higher than the many weak motored 10"s out there - but that costs money! Alex -
What.... ??????? if the thing wont go over 3khz...then that is going to affect tone BIG TIME...
The size of the speaker alone doesn't determine how high it goes. One of the 15"s I currently use goes two octaves higher than the 10"s I used to use. Alex -
I'm running my Shuttle with the master at about 10 o'clock normally, I don't ever get to halfway with it through the 610, so I'm not pushing much through it in terms of power. The cab is probably overkill for my current volume needs. Given that, do you think I'll still get enough power into the Big One?
I'd have thought so! If the limiter LED is rarely lighting then you'll be fine. Alex

Gig tonight but feeling poorly. Help me get through it.
I think my first target would be the singer, and then the drummer. I won't bore you all why
Do you have a long lead or wireless so you can head off the front of the stage and hit two birds with one stone? Alex -
Wouldn't he be miked up through a large PA though?
Yes but I bet the stage volume is incredibly high and there's probably little bass coming back through the monitors. Alex
Crikey, it's almost my turn! Excitement kicking in, looking forward to getting my hands on this and putting it through it's paces next to the 610. I've got a feeling my Ampeg's gonna get it's ass kicked
Tonally I know what I'd prefer but in terms of loudness you probably haven't got enough power for the Big One to keep up with the 610HLF. Could you take this as an opportunity to vomit on your drummer? Alex -
Our drummer uploaded it, hence the marvellous picture quality... The funk starts about 4 minutes in. Alex

It's a series wired extension so adding it will reduce the power output but will INCREASE the actual max dB SPL. Not by as much as with a parallel wired extension unless the internal speaker is particularly feeble. You don't hear electrical watts, you hear Sound Pressure Level. Alex
Just put my name between hubrad who has it now and rik (esa) who is next on the list and fully understand if I am asked to go further down the list rather than jumping in, it's just that the cab is only a mile from my house, I have two gigs over the weekend I could try it out on and get it moving again on Monday
Good move - make sure Hubrad knows! Alex

The more cone area you have, the larger the enclosures and the more midrangey and/or overdriven your sound, the fewer watts you will need. Look at Lemmy's rig - 4x12"+4x15" plus a mere 200W valve head - and Lemmy LOUD. Alex
If there was a 4x12...
I'm kind of leaning towards a cab that looks like a 4x12" but is actually a vertical 2x12". That's plenty of sensitivity for guitar and I could do a ported variant for those that want the extra bottom of a sealed 4x12".
Not sure this is a winner! 99% of the guitarists I play with use Fender combos.
That's what bothers me - lots of guitarists use combos, which makes sense - but most of those combos are the wrong shape and unnecessarily heavy. Hence my inclination towards the Marshall/Mesa heavy posse. I'd like to do a lightweight valve combo for guitar but haven't the time at the moment - my guitarist uses a Soundcity which is a most excellent combo with a very clean valve preamp. Weighs as much as a small pony though... Alex

A good idea? Two obvious things that come to mind are a lightweight Marshall 4x12" replacement that looks as imposing but has better dispersion and weighs very little and a cab for those that use modellers (and thus is more like a nice PA cab disguised as a guitar cab!) Alex
I also tried the northern Compact recently, I didn't gig or practice with it as it isn't big/loud enough for my band, but I did give it a good run against a similarly sized cab the Matamp 2x12.
And?! Alex
I totally agree with you. My concern is that as we are the headline band, we provide the backline and if we turn up with nothing, it will screw the other bands night up. Its bad enough he refuses to make soundcheck in time but I don't want him to screw up the other bands gig.
Let the other bands know that this is likely to happen and give them his email address and mobile number so he has the pleasure of explaining to them why he's entitled to act like a prima donna.
He has a very good kit which he says, only comes out for special gigs.
Well this is going to be a very special gig for him if he's just going to play it with a tambourine... Don't do anything yourself - if he wants to be able to play the drums at the gig, then he needs to sort some out. And if he won't bring his own kit then the expense of hiring a substitute kit should be his own. Alex P.S. Is his very good kit so nice that he refuses to hit it with small pieces of wood in case it gets damaged?
