1.
OK thanks for that mate. So do you reckon that whistling could be designed out with a set of piston rings? I was just thinking that if the cone and the surround were air tight but otherwise not fixed to each other, then the excursion could be potentially much greater.
The limiting factor in excursion tends to be the motor system, not the surround, and that's where R&D still needs to be focused. Best thing I've seen was Adire's split gap topology which gave them huge excursion but low inductance and decent sensitivity. Alex
2. Five more Compacts and the first three Vintages are just awaiting fitting with speakers and hardware. Excellent. Alex
3.
Bit top-heavy then. Burman is 700mm wide.
That's one reason I made the Vintage 24" wide. Speaking of which I have three of these in my possession, just waiting for final finishing. Alex
4.
Hmm, thanks. That explains why a speaker works but it doesn't explain the need for a seal.
If it wasn't sealed you'd hear air whistling as it leaks around the cone under compression or rarefaction. Alex
5. It's just what that midrange speaker does - pistonic output drops gradually above 1kHz and then the cone break-up modes kick in. Fortunately that's a rather nice sound and those break-up modes and the phase plug are what gives it superior off-axis response to every other midrange driver I've looked at. Alex
6. Being told what control settings to use really won't help much, if at all. You have to listen and adjust how you play, and how you set the knobs on both bass and amp. But playing the bass the right way is the most important bit. And the bass/mid/treble/etc knobs all do different things on different amps. Alex
7. Stick some foam under your strings by the bridge. That way you can play busy without it sounding busy and by muting the attack it'll make you sound more behind the beat. You can also play the 'look how I'm getting in the vibe, this is old school' thang. And pronounce it fonk, not funk. Alex
8. Be bad, sit back, mute lots and play it cool. And then tell them you'll let them know if they're good enough. Alex
9. The problem would lie in making a high excursion surround - how would you deal with the corners? Various '80s cheaper hi-fi speakers have square drivers because they thought it looked good. Increasing the speaker area in a box is only one part of the puzzle - unless you make cabs very deep then there's usually more than enough baffle space to get the cone area you need and squeezing too much cone area into a small box kills off the sensitivity in the lows. And without excursion all the cone area in the world isn't going to make big bottom and then you're back to the issue of making a surround that can flex back and forth and control the speaker location laterally whilst not causing extra stress at the sharp turn of the corners. Alex
10.
Has anyone else herd anything like this?
Yes. Fortunately it's rubbish! Alex
11.
You should put a grill across to stop small children crawling inside - but I suppose you could always pop them out with a few low F[sup]#[/sup]'s if they got stuck
I'd be more worried about hamsters and other dozy rodents: "Dormouse populations were on the increase until a whole tribe moved into a Barefaced loudspeaker cabinet..." 13.
Very nice. How wide is it? I'm trying to visualise my Burman Pro 4000 sitting on top of one.
It's 520mm or 20.5" plus the thickness of the finish and the corners, so about 525mm all told. Couple of shots here with a 19" rack on a Big One: http://www.barefacedbass.com/thebigone.html Alex
14. Your Dad's a good drummer! You're not doing bad at all but you actually sound better at the end when he drops out because the rest of the time you're not playing in the groove with him. Sounds like you're hitting that bass v hard too! Spend some time working on really simple stuff like playing 8th note roots whilst your Dad grooves on the drums. Work on feeling the beat so you play those notes dead on time, not early or late. Keep at it! Alex
15. Looks good doesn't it? The port looks massive!
Is that just a regular old handle on the top there? Deos that mean there are three handles on Big Ones?
Yes, three handles. One strap for tilt and roll, two straps to pick it up in theory but in practice I just tend to grab whichever are most convenient.
Also, is it possible to have, say, swappable grills with a vintage one and a normal one? That would be pretty cool.
Sadly not, they're built slightly differently. And the corners differ as well. Alex
16. Not just the wattage but the speakerage - a higher quality 15", two 12"s, two good 10"s or four lesser 10"s, etc. You don't hear the power, you hear the sound pressure level and it's all down to how the speakers convert electrical power into changes in air pressure. Moving air is what counts! Alex
17. I'd have thought the lottery comment is more relevant to the chance of becoming a rockstar. I can't see why with talent and hard work you couldn't make a career as a pro musician. Alex
18. Not a Vintage but a vintageised Big One: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=522489 The Vintage will be taller and wider with a less tall port. Otherwise should look near identical. I think I might put the badge in the top-left on them though, more easily seen on stage and appropriate for the height. Alex
19. There's bound to be something in the for sale forum on here. Get something a bit bigger and more powerful than your EB180 and it'll be less likely to expire! Alex
20.
I've been playing for 5 years and I still think I'm sh*t. Self-esteem issues?
I've always had delusions of grandeur which my wife now keeps in check... Alex P.S. Though she does admit I'm a badass bass mofo! I've yet to convince her on the singing and songwriting front...
21.
Yep, I remember when I had been playing for a few months, I thought that I was as good as the pros. It's said that the more you learn, the less you know.
Yep, I was the best bass player in the world after a year. Downhill ever after... I think it's the more you learn, the more you've yet to learn! I know more but I also know how much there is I don't know. Alex
22. Just taken some measurements of a couple of Big Ones this morning. This plot is the first vintageised Big One (should be identical response to standard Big One), orange line on-axis, purple line 45 deg off-axis. Ignore the stuff below 100Hz, it's a short chirp in non-ideal conditions so I certainly wouldn't believe that the cabs are flat to 20Hz! However the rest should be a pretty good representation. Alex
23. Well I'm more than happy to extend the trial period on the Compact if you want to go round and A/B it against lots of 4x10"s! Would be very interesting to get a comprehensive report on how many of them it beats, how many it can keep up with, and which select few go louder and lower. Alex
24. I just put my 4-string aside and didn't touch it for months. Am more comfortable on my big 36" five now after a year and a bit than on the four I played for almost a decade before! Alex
