  1. I found some Labella 760G Gold tapewounds in my music drawer so have tried those. Louder than the TI flats unplugged, and sound pretty good. I should add the Epiphone uses medium scale strings so that limits choice a bit.

  3. Hello all. I was wondering what peoples opinions were on strings that have the most presence and volume unplugged. I mainly practice on my Epiphone Century bass unplugged (with a pick) and whilst the TI Jazz Flats currently on it sound great, I got to thinking if there was a particular material or brand that would be louder/brighter/fuller etc. I know phospher or roundwounds would probably be louder but I'd prefer to stick with flats, tapes or halfwounds. Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

  10. I tried these on my archtop bass but decided to stick with nylons. Fitted for about an hour and each string has 8 inches of silk left. £25 posted.
  11. Up for sale is a Nigel Forster Session King which I have recently acquired. I was hoping this guitar would be the one for everything I need, jazz band comping, bluegrass strumming and some slide playing. It is loud and it is awesome, but the one thing I can’t quite get on with is the thin neck. I have some issues with my left arm and find playing for long periods easier with chunky necks. However I saw this for sale and couldn’t resist as it ticks all my boxes. Loud, responsive and beautiful. This is due to the thin lattice braced top with very stiff and heavy sides, aka Greg Smallman applied to steel-strings. This results in a very loud and responsive guitar with a lot of characteristics akin to a lattice braced classical. This one is an upgraded model with an ebony fretboard and spruce top; Nigels original spec was a mahogany top with rosewood fretboard. It also comes with a Hiscox Pro II case. Everything else is as per Nigel’s spec – Cuban mahogany back and sides and the super cool distressed relic finish on the top. The nut is 46mm wide, whilst at the 12th fret it’s 58mm. The neck is depth is 20mm behind fret 1 and 22mm behind fret 9.   13. So the bass is now done; custom Kent Armstrong floating pickup fitted and sounding awesome. Very pleased with how it’s turned out.
  14. I only left them on one night. 😂 Was too worried about the tension and put the Labella Black Nylon 60-115 back on which don’t feel like they are pulling as much.
  15. I’ve been experimenting with strings on my Epiphone De Luxe Century bass and have found my preference is for Labella Flats 49-109. I’m now wondering if these might be too high a tension for the trapeze tailpiece. The bass comes stock with D’addario tapewounds which are pretty low tension, and I’m worried the tailpiece might snap at some point. Does anybody have an experience with heavy strings on an archtop bass with trapeze tailpiece that could pass on any advice please? I also play resonator guitars and have seen old Nationals with broken tailpieces so guess my concern comes from there. Cheers.

  17. I play in an old time blues/jazz band and wanted to get a close approximation of the upright sound without having to use one. I also think an acoustic looking instrument fits better with the bands overall stage look. I've had a few over the years but settled on an acoustic guitar converted to bass by Brandoni. I liked these so much I got another when I saw one for sale. These, when fitted with decent nylon strings, give a lovely woody and thumpy tone via a magnetic pickup in the soundhole. I much preferred these to any piezo I tried, even those in Ubasses which a lot of people love. Then Epiphone released the Masterbilt Century archtop basses and my head was turned. I tried a couple in a shop, both fed back terribly and one the G string had no output. The piezos in them were awful but they played really well. Recently I picked one up after speaking to Aaron Armstrong who said he has could wind me a custom floating pickup. I've now got the pickup fitted and it's working out really well, so much so I've sold one Brandoni and the other is in the classifieds. Neither have much acoustic volume due to the nylon strings, but plugged in I get the acoustic tone I was looking for.

  19. No, I’ve used it on large stages indoors and outside and never had any problems. The plug has sat in the case since I got it.
  20. No, it’s a standard magnetic pickup with volume and tone controls (shown in the 3rd picture)
