I've just sold my SG bass but used flats on it. For no silk at all at the bridge end, I found GHS Precision Flats to be very good on the SG. My strings of choice were TI Flats which sounded ace on mine, but had the silks on the bridge as you mention. I bought a Webbteca Mod Bar which stops this by increasing the distance from ball-end to bridge. It improved the sound quite a like, and I'd recommend them on SG basses.

I have an acoustic bass that I dig quite a lot. I use it for practicing at home/outside and acoustic gigs/open mikes. Depending on what you want them for they can be a cool asset. We do acoustic gigs quite a bit so strung with phosphor strings and using a pick I can just about be heard (I had a resonator bass that was louder in these situations). If we're playing acoustic but plugged in I tend to change the strings to flats as the tone through the onboard preamp is lovely. It's also fun to hang out with mates jammin' away. I'm selling my 2011 Gibson SG Faded Cherry bass. I'm a massive Free fan and love this bass, however my best mate is getting married in Canada this year and I'm trying to raise funds for my wife and I to go. This has been my main bass since making the switch from 6 string guitar. I've had it from new and really babied it. It has some minimal signs of use, but nothing of note. I've gigged it and it has been superb. It's currently fitted with GHS Precision Flats, but I will also include a set of DR Hi Beam roundwounds that I strung it with for a few months when it was new. I've also bought a Mod Bar for it which has been a revelation. I didn't like how some string windings would sit on the bridge saddles and this prevents that. It has definitely improved the tone.
