The Delano Xtender comes in two versions - the HE (quad coil) and HE/S (dual coil). Does anyone have experience of either (or both)? Do the two versions have different tonal characteristics? Does the quad coil allow for more switching options? I can't find any info on the Delano website or demos on youtube showing the difference. I'd like to get an Xtender for a project bass but don't know how to decide which version to buy. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

How much effect will pickup placement have on the tone??

Personally I like quaintly analogue things such as bendy strings and moving parts that need adjusting every so often, but for those that don't ... (fugly warning)

Good to hear! What was the part number out of interest?

Rick Toone (really?) would agree with you - http://www.ricktoone.com/tuner.html

Excellent, that's good to know!

Be interested to know which shop on the offchance it's within striking distance (W.Sussex)?

I'm really tempted. Came across them a few weeks ago and contacted Supro to find out who distributes them in the UK. Turns out to be JHS. The full range popped up on ebay a couple of days ago from Chummy Musical in Ipswich - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUPRO-HUNTINGTON-2-BASS-GUITAR-NATURAL-ASH-2042AN/282840631005?epid=15014569457&hash=item41da9d86dd:g:-4wAAOSwrnRafJ3O I also asked about weight and they gave me these average weights for the different woods: Mahogany - 7.8 Ash - 8.6 Flame (maple top, mahogany body) - 7.8 Black (mahogany) - 7.6

Andertons have just replied (impressive at this time on a Sunday) and say they don't have a Mustang in the shop to try it with but the bass team are 'pretty confident it will fit'. I was hoping for something a bit more concrete but it sounds like an option worth exploring further.

Thanks, good to know there's enough wiggle room in the M80. The same with some other guitar gig bags maybe, which would open up lots of short-scale BG options.
-
Can you post the overall length of your Mustang (top of headstock to bottom strap pin)? The max internal dimension of the M80 for guitar is given as 41.5" (105.4cm) which I think is ever so slightly short but a gig bag is probably a little more flexible than a hard case. Good call.

The saddle height and intonation screws on mine are also black. I've just checked mine again and a 6-32 thread definitely fits. Sounds to me like the screws you've been sent are simply the wrong size (possibly metric?) whatever it says on the pack!

This link is just a regular bass case for full size P and J etc. I've emailed them to ask if the Gator 'extra long' guitar case fits, just waiting to hear back: https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/electric-guitar-accessories/cases-bags-for-electric-guitars/hard-cases-for-electric-guitars/gator-deluxe-molded-case-for-electric-guitars-extra-long

Hmm, that's a bit odd, 6-32 thread definitely fits my deluxe saddles. Is it possible the threads in the saddle have been crossed or somehow damaged?

I have Lindy Fralin (standard wind) and Fender Custom Shop 60s in a couple of my basses. Great vintage base tone from both with good punch and clarity depending on how you play. I also have a DiMarzio Area J set on my medium scale jazz. Slightly different animal being humcancelling with Alnico 2 magnets but delivers nOa good vintage single coil sound with enough clarity at the top end (not dark like some hum cancelling types). Or experiment with preamps as chris_b says! I used an Audere JZ3 for several years on my Lakland jazz which added a whole new dimension of flexibility. I generally prefer the more natural and open sound of a passive J or P though (I'm a bit old fashioned).

What do you feel is lacking with the standard pickups? Or to put it another way, what are you looking for in a replacement pickup (eg. vintage or modern tone, more low-mid beef, more high-mid punch/clarity, extended lows/highs with scooped mids etc)? There are loads of alternatives but they all have different characteristics.

It might be worth looking at a baritone guitar hard case such as this 'extra long' Gator case (£80): https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/electric-guitar-accessories/cases-bags-for-electric-guitars/hard-cases-for-electric-guitars/gator-deluxe-molded-case-for-electric-guitars-extra-long I believe the overall length of a Mustang is 107cm and the overall internal length of this case is given as 106.7mm so it might just fit. I'd be interested to know myself!

Measurements from the 12th fret on my SR5: 332mm from nut to centreline of neck coil 344mm from nut to centreline of pickup (between coils) 356mm from nut to centreline of bridge coil
-
These measurements put the pickup very close to the bridge and are quite a long way off ...

Crikey, well done!

Yes realise that, I wondered if it was just a loose connecting wire or a broken winding in the pickup itself. I guess it was a connecting wire but hats off to you if you managed to find and fix a broken winding!
