1. Yes it is possible for the piezo signal to be out of phase with the mag pickup. The blended piezo+mag sound will usually sound somewhat thin and weedy if they're out of phase. Most piezo buffer circuits have a phase reversal switch to cater for this. How are you mixing the piezo and mag signals, do you have some sort of buffer circuit or preamp onboard?
2. Sorry, just seen on the ACG website that the preamp is a P-Retro. The 4-way switch is presumably bridge / neck / series / parallel?
3. This pic of your bass from the JHS/Vintage website may be a useful reference (bridge looks to be about 1cm from the end of the pickguard)
4. +1 I have a hipshot piezo bridge in one of mine and that's grounded.
5. Lovely. Could you explain the knobs and eq bit more please. Is it an East 3-band SPM-01 modular setup with internal freq selection? Does it have a pickup balance control or is it just a selector switch? What are the 4 pickup selector settings? Thanks
6. Re #4 - only thing I'd add to this is that the slightly greater string length from the saddle to the tailpiece, and the shallower break angle over the saddles, makes the strings feel a bit more 'compliant' compared with a regular one-piece bridge. Both these factors give the illusion of slightly less tension but in fact it's just down to the geometry and the strings moving ever so slightly more freely over the saddles. The string tension itself is exactly the same as if they were on any other bass of the same scale.
7. These ones should do the job - http://www.axesrus.co.uk/Barrel-Knob-Flat-p/ns003.htm 6.3mm will fit a 1/4" shaft. The extra 0.3mm doesn't sound like much but it's critical!
8. Thanks for info. It does look like an SB-2 neck then. I found a 2010 thread on bassesbyleo.com about what I think must be this same bass (I don't think there are too many like this around!) which also mentions a 1992 date in the pickup cavity.
9. Very nice indeed. What is the weight please and the nut width? Does the finish have a slightly metallic sheen, hard to tell from the pics.
10. I don't have one myself to check but this link suggests a standard bullet trussrod nut needs a 1/8" hex wrench: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-039-70s-Bullet-Guitar-Bass-Truss-Rod-Nut-099-4945-000-/292079262257
11. Yes it must be one of the later/last runs as they changed to the current deluxe model with jazz type bridge pickup and new hi-mass bridge in 2009/10. The first USA P Deluxe was introduced around 1986 with bridge humbucker, 4 bolt neck and black+chrome tuners. This model ran to around 2000 when the 5-bolt neck was added. Somewhere around 2006 the tuners were changed to Hipshot Lites.
12. Here's a regular 2008 USA P Deluxe, is yours the same as this? - https://reverb.com/item/884290-2008-fender-american-deluxe-precision-bass-montego-black-w-ohsc
13. Duh, thanks John but I ordered one (without a detent) from WD music before seeing this. I'll mark the centre position! Will try and remember to contact you next time I can't find anything! Cheers
14. Thanks Pete1967. Royal Mail always sting me for an £8 'handling fee' when I buy small items like this from the US, but I can't find any over here so may have to bite the bullet. Cheers
15. I've checked the usual places (Allparts, Axesrus, CH, ebay etc) but having difficulty finding one of these with a centre detent. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
16. Can you get a more accurate weight?
17. Just bought a Samson L1200 mixing desk from Chris. Easy transaction, arrived well packed and in great condition. A solid and reliable BCer, pleasure to do business with. Many thanks! Ian
18. Bought an AKG D5 mic from Mike, very straightforward transaction, quick delivery and mic in excellent condition (boxed and like new). Many thanks Mike. Ian
19.
I've done my best to make a video. This was recorded on my iPhone as I do not have any recording equipment.
Sounds great, full bodied and articulate at the same time. A rather unique P-Ray sort of sound! Thanks for doing that.
20. Nice. I'd be interested to hear how this sounds with the MM pickup in the P position, can you post some sound clips?
21. Aha, looks like they're both the longer bridge size then. Cheers
22. Hi Laurence, this might sound like an odd question but can you please let me know the pickup dimensions as indicated in the pic below? I believe that both pickups on the JB-2 are the same size whereas on a regular Jazz the bridge pup is slightly longer than the neck pup. Reason for asking is to do with fitting replacement pickups which will be different sizes. The dimensions will help to determine which replacements would fit. Thanks
