Bass Guitar / Double Bass - Who Plays What?
ashevans09 replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Yup I play double bass as well , do orchestral and jazz stuff with it. My teacher set me up well though, when he started teaching me bass guitar he taught me a fretting hand technique that works for bass and also will keep you exactly on the spot on a double bass too. What can I say? I love the guy. Also doing the finger technique for double bass on a regular bass sounds kinda meaty too -
Fantastic!

Heya, At the mo I am looking to finish off my rig with a 1u or 2u compressor I can rackmount. I had a look over at talkbass and the amount of compressors available is scaring me slightly and since I'm buying blind I thought it would probably be a better idea to come and ask for recommendations . So, what are you guys using out there? Ash

Hmm, whereabouts are you staying? South Beach kind of area? I've been to Miami quite alot and honestly it's pretty much barren for that kind of thing. If you really need a fix go to the Sam Ash at the Dolphin Mall. Has some nice laklands and some other models you don't often see around the UK (like Traben, ESP and stuff). Also you can just pick off the wall and play in the US so that's kinda nice. Also if you go to the Dolphin Mall I can recommend a restaurant there called Charcoals. Looks like sh*t but my god it's amazing, life shortening food. Love it . It's next to the boarders there. There is also a small Guitar Center about an hourish drive away from South Beach in Kendall. Just enjoy the sun mate , and try and have a walk around the Art Deco district. It's not very big but it's a nice walk if the weather's nice and there's also a Haagen Daas ice cream place so you can cool down . Downtown isn't particularly interesting either tbh. Have a great time though, it's an amazing place to relax
I was originally looking at their UL cabs...as an option for a neo cab that I want to add to my arsenal. Ive seen pretty good reviews, but also seen that they have had to make their cabs slightly heavier recently...which is a strange one. I dont have any experience with their cabs to be honest...they seem like a good option though
Fair dos, I have a UL-410 hanging around if you're interested

ashevans09 replied to Johnny13's topic in Musicians Wanted
Aaah! I would love to do this but I can't go full time till august And I'm in Oxford too. Bah. -
Kind of an extension of the "What bass do you play" thread, I'm interested to see the general provenance of everyone's basses . So! Where was ya hunk o' wood made? Fender MIM = mexico, MIJ = Japan etc. Just say if more places are needed Multiple votes allowed so all basses can be counted
In a word. Canibalisation. Robbing one piece to mend another. Their prices are a bit steep too.
That was so much more mundane than I was hoping

Lovely! Had a righty exactly like that a while ago. Gorgeous gorgeous bass
I don't think I'm likely to be dropping my LMII off any tall buildings anytime soon, so I think I'll be OK.
Aaaah you never know what might just happen... :brow: -
I was just floating around the John Henry's website a little while ago and something struck me. Practically every used cab they were selling said "speaker missing". How the hell do you just lose a speaker? I know they rent stuff out but come on, what kind of strange, debauched antics must these cabs have witnessed in order to pull that off?

In all fairness I would be giggling like a schoolgirl too... -
Hmm something that my bass teacher taught me and that works a charm is to sing what you want to solo. It will naturally be musical and different to the usual pentatonic stuff and eventually your hands will learn to play what you're singing, if that makes sense.

Meh props to the guy, I'd kill for a signature bass, let alone one that nice. Gorgeous piece of wood
Hardcore / Metalcore guitarists CRAVE these amps!
Damn straight. Moreso than Rectifiers IME. Best guitar tone I've heard in a long time was a top line Les Paul ESP through one of them and a marshall cab. Sounded immense I don't even play guitar that much and the thought is making me drool.
There you go - unless you're going to re-string using more wraps, simply slacken the string to the point whre you can push the wrap right down and hold it there while you re-tighten. Glad to help.
Thanks alot mate
The neck should have a slight concave bend in it, and giving the age of the bass, and the weather, the truss rod may need a tweek. GP.
And yeah that was my original thought as well, but all seems well and fine with the rod
Did you recently go to a lighter gauge or different brand of strings?
Nope, always had EB heavies on it...
Just on open A? Can you establish if the buzz is eminating from behind the nut by depressing the string between nut and machine - if so, the likely explanation is too little wrap on the A-string post giving insufficient break angle. See what happens and report back.
Depressing the string gets rid of it, so it seems you're right! , so if i understand correctly a fix for this would be changing out the string and wrapping it more around the post?

Heya, Recently my Fender P has started to develop fret buzz, though it only occurs when playing an open A. Everywhere else is fine and the neck appears to be correct so is this a nut issue? It's a pretty old bass (1978) so would a new nut be the best route here? Cheers, Ash
