[/quote] I can only speak from experience, but I've never had a good time with covers. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that you don't have to put the work in, that it's easy, it doesn't matter if you don't even attempt to learn the songs etc etc. Very much a "that'll do" attitude, one I can't abide. My experience in originals has been very different. The people I've worked with care about what they're doing, put time in making sure that the songs they write and perform are done to the best of their ability. That's just my experience though.

Covers, I have decided, can be a soul destroying exercise. I thought I'd give it a go this week. Turn up for an 'audition', only got asked to learn two songs, not difficult. AND GUESS WHAT?!!? That's right, I was the only one who'd learnt them. Don't why I waste my freakin' time!!! AND, the supposed originals band I joined are mutating into a covers band. BUT, a lazy covers band where you guess what the chord progression is, because you can't be bothered to learn the songs, maybe sing 2 of the 4 verses, chuck in a chorus, if you remember, and then spend most of the 10mins you're playing the song to allow the guitarist to use it as an excuse to fret w***. And the songs they choose, how dull!!!

Barnstaple based band doing mostly original music looking for drummer who is willing to regularly practise and gig. Influences from Pink Floyd, Radio Head and Devon Townsend.... Really looking for someone who wants to have an Epic sound and has a versatile skill to bring something to our sound. Several songs in the pipeline but we are waiting for a drummer to join so we can have a united sound for gigs.

I have an audition for a covers band, well I say audition, more of a laid back run through a couple of songs, on Sunday. The material is ok and I may make a few quid. I have also just got back from practice with my originals band which is creating some really interesting stuff.

Short scale. I've got an Ibby and neck length, for me, would be more of an issue that nut width etc. I also own a p bass and I've got rubbish hands but don't have a problem with it. Ok, it's easier to do fast fills etc on the Ibby but still, the P is still very playable for someone with all the dexterity of an elephant.

You could ask Jon Wines, although I don't think he's forgiven you for leaving the last covers band you were in together

If I could find like minded people that would be great, as a fun side project. However, most covers bands, it seems, walk a well trodden path.

Covers bands are hard work. Learning all those songs, most of which I wouldn't normally give time of day to on my iPod. I'm trying my best to stay away from an out and out covers bands. The bands I'm in at the moment may do a few covers but it's original material first and foremost. I want to be in an originals band because I want to make people feel they way I've felt at the best gigs I've been to, and all of those have been to see originals bands. Thing is when people hit their mid 30's they seem to think that's it, life is over, I can't write any more, I'm confined to covers. Trying to find people to do original material is incredibly difficult, which may explain why I'm in a band with a guitarist who's 23

I put flats on my p bass recently, first time I've ever tried them. Absolutely great sound, especially for one of the bands I'm in. Sound even more lovely through the Ampeg cab I've just bought.
