  1. Maybe time to book an appointment with the dentist. The repair he did on my broken tooth (he drilled out the filling and put in a new one, that was it) has failed miserably from day one...and that was about 2 months ago I have a huge hole in my tooth and tooth ache every day, for the last 6 weeks. But I hate dentists...

I had a friend who went on tour with a singer who had a fear of dentists. He got severe toothache halfway through the tour and because he couldn't bare a visit to the dentist, asked my friend to pull out his tooth with a set of pliers.

      Which he did.

Do you have any friends who are handy with a set of pliers?

      That's a bit extreme 🙂

Extractions I can't sort of handle, it's the root canal and crown he wants to do that's put me off going back

If there's not much salvageable of the tooth, a cap is the best way forward (or go with a gap). Root canal pre cap is also sensible, I speak from experience of having to have a cap drilled through to do an RC as the cap wouldn't come off. I'm an odontophobe too. At least I was. If you can find someone who is sympathetic to your fear, it makes all the difference. It took me years to find a dentist who understood my fear and I was happy to visit, but I did. Unfortunately, I then moved 500+ miles away.

  2. I was 10 when Gimme All Your Lovin' was released. I probably saw the video on Top Of The Pops...and being young thought it was a great song. I subsequently got my Dad to order me a ZZ Top album from his latest Britannia Music catalogue. The cassette that arrived was The Best Of ZZ Top, which to a 10 year olds ears was a 1000 miles from what I'd heard on TOTP. However, that's what I got into. I really loved early ZZ Top. I ended up getting Rio Grande Mud a few months later. So while my peers were listening to mid 80s British pop, I was listening to early 70s Texas Blues/Boogie. Several years later I bought the CD version of Rio Grande Mud. Unfortunately I got the remastered one, that was made to sound like Eliminator, so loads of reverb. Gimme All Your Lovin' is a very ZZ Top song, it's just got a ton of reverb on it and synths
  3. I'll just stay in the dark 😎
  4. It may have been already answered, but how do your points go up? I'm just intrigued to know
  5. I've just watched the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix, it's a great watch. Just 3 humble guys who wanted to play their stuff. The sad part being now that Dusty Hill, who like the others comes across as a really lovely person, isn't with us anymore He leaves a fantastic legacy
  6. ...and then there were 3. I changed my strings yesterday on my Jazz type bass and tweaked the truss rod. The tension of the strings, new and old, were noticeably different and so was the neck relief. I ended up adjusting saddle height and intonation as well.
  7. No, because I can't really play any other instrument. I occasionally look at a Strat and think, that'd be nice. But it'd be a waste of money because I can only just about play A, E, G and D chords...maybe occasionally C
  8. What driver did you put in the Schroeder?
  9. Absolutely gutted. I've always liked ZZ TOP, and have been lucky enough to see them live. This is very sad news, Dusty was damn cool
  10. I'm with you. Mine makes me look/sound a lot more accomplished than I actually am
  11. The Ibanez SR is a great bass, very comfortable to play, good sound. I had one, and was probably the easiest bass to play that I've owned. However, as @Bassassin pointed out, their value plummets like a stone. Having never played one of the Tanglewoods that you're currently using, I've only seen photos of them online, the neck looks quite chunky...I may be wrong. The Ibanez neck would feel very different if the Tanglewood is a bit on the chunky side, and it might be best to try one before committing.
  12. My rehearsal conundrum has been resolved for me. I was trying to be diplomatic and compromise etc, I totally understood that the drummer was cautious with his partner being pregnant and the number of cases locally. However, the singer threw a hissy fit and went off on one about he didn't care about restrictions and we should just get on with it. Oddly the drummer agreed it was all a load of made up nonsense and then they agreed to leave it until the winter after the drummer's partner had given birth. I can't be bothered with people throwing hissy fits, so I'll just let them float off into the distance and I'll find something else. The irony is the singer has only ever done 2 gigs, and those were in the band I was in with him...I left suddenly because I had an offer from a better band. I felt bad at the time, I don't after today's toddler twaddle. One of the benefits of fishing...you don't have to put up with other people's temper tantrums.
  13. Myself and some old band mates are trying to start a new band. Unfortunately there's been quite an outbreak of Covid in our, albeit small, town. Our drummer is very hesitant about rehearsing indoors as his partner is pregnant and he doesn't want her catching it. That's fine and totally reasonable, we'll be patient and wait. If we can find an outdoor space then we'll use that, not easy to find though. I've had both jabs, but as I said to him, that didn't stop me getting or paying on Covid. So we are where we are, I'm not one of those desperate musos that would play at the opening of an envelope.
  14. My wife is far happier when I am in bands and playing gigs than when I go fishing. I'll leave it at that.
  15. Someone found a use for those left over Wharfedale grills then.
  16. I like mute buttons and clip lights. Actually the more lights the better for me, lots of lights. I used to have a rack mounted compressor as part of my set up, and only used one of the two channels. I still used to turn the dials to the point where the lights came on on the unused channel. LOTS OF LIGHTS!!!! Audiences think you're professional if you've got lots of lights on your gear...it's true.
  17. Having had an outbreak at the school, now we've had an outbreak from the local Football club's bar (people watching the Euro's). It seems to be spreading quite a bit, my parent's neighbours have it, 2 doors down from me have it and so on. 2 members of one of my old bands and myself were trying to get something together, and maybe try and get a first practice in, but as things stand at the moment it's too risky. It's a small town and very easy to come into contact with someone who was at the source of this outbreak. Given the current level of infection rate I'd only consider an outdoor gig anyway.
  18. I watched the Kinks documentary last night, I thoroughly enjoyed it despite not being a huge fan. One thing that stuck me was how articulate the Davies brothers are and Suggs who contributed. Articulate, intelligent, observational. Attributes that are disappearing in mainstream popular music imo. Although Weller and Noel Gallagher didn't sound particularly articulate, so perhaps... I think it reaffirmed why I didn't like Britpop. It always struck me as just copying the likes of the Kinks
  19. I found myself in the same position in the second lockdown...or was it the first? Anyway, it was one of them. I'd sold my cab and amp after my last band split and then earlier this year, in a fit of optimism, decided to get something to make loud noises with. The choice, as we all know, is actually mind boggling. I ended up buying a s/h Peavey MiniMax from fellow Basschat member, and a Fender Rumble 210 cab. It took me months to decide on each one (to the point it annoyed my wife with all the indecision). I looked at combos, heads, cabs, everything, of all the brands. I came very close to getting on end of line Ashdown combo, but just had a feeling it wouldn't be what I like. If it was now I'd have to add the new Ampeg Rocket Bass combos to my list of possibles...it's just endless. What I bought works for me, I think. I've not had the chance to use it in a band yet, but I'm sure it'll be loud enough and I like the tone/s it can produce.
  20. This just came up on my iPod. It's still one of the best written and produced songs made in my opinion. The words, and I'm not mad on deciphering words, are simply brilliant.
  21. My current twiddling sound companion. Peavey MiniMax, Fender Rumble 210 and my V7, of course. I had an Aguilar TH350 with a Schroeder 212L before. I liked the Schroeder but never warmed to the Aguilar, I like the Peavey ( difficult comparison but given different cabs, but I did try different amps through the Schroeder and the Aggy through different cabs). I've not had the chance to use this with a band yet, only at home, it sounds pretty good in the living room. The neighbours seem to like it as well, they've been tapping on the walls as I've playing along to songs.
  22. Guitarist I was in a band in used to use one...the amp weighed more than my car.
  23. If someone's out to make money out of me, I'll take my cut. All the best bands I've been in (some had pro musicians in) and the best bands in my area all charge.
  24. This takes me back to my late teens, going to festivals and small INCREDIBLY HOT and sweaty gigs in grotty venues. Great fun. I always loved the simplicity of these bass lines, really punchy.
  25. As with most ventures in life, it boils down to 'can you afford to fail?'. A lot of the artists that emerged in previous decades, some didn't have much to lose in the first place, and in the 70s and 80s the social security system wasn't as draconian and that gave just enough support to 'give it a go'. But it's always been the case that if you've got parents with money you can risk failure much easier than if you haven't go wealthy parents. Take Richard Branson. He's always held up as a some self made entrepreneur... which he is if you overlook the small issue that he could always fall back on his wealthy background for support (his grandfather was a privy councillor). Does it matter in music? If all we end up with is Coldplay, Florence and the Machine and Mumford and Sons....then yes it does. That said I'm a Radiohead fan, and a Doves fan (Andy and Jez Williams' dad was a well known architect) and I hate with a passion Oasis...so perhaps it might be a good thing
