1. I bought a 91 Korean Squier P a few weeks back for less than £140 inc p&p. Even at that price i thought i was paying a little over the odds, but I really wanted it and now I've got it , absolutely love it. I'll be replacing the pups and pots, not because it's essential but I've never done it before and want to have a go. All told it compares favorably with a MIM P, so I'm happy . Hope that helps
2.
There's no need for anyone to justify why they do things the way they do. If you want to copy the fine detail - fine. If you don't - fine. If you can't be arsed - fine. If you're just beginning - fine. If you've done a thousand gigs - fine. There's no right or wrong here - just an interest in other people's approach.
Pah! You don't believe that for a second. You're not trying to tell me you haven't heard a band murdering a song because they're doing in their own way and not wanted to clout them with a nearby piece of furniture for being crap. If you are, you've gone down in my estimation
3. there could well be a distinction between the band who have the skill to play something other than the original line and create something. As opposed to those who are too lazy and/or lacking on skill and just bodge it.
4. What bugged me was the not being arsed to learn the song at all, that some people have. Get to rehearsal and they attempt, I emphasise attempt, to busk their way through. They don't even learn the general structure. I'm in an originals band now and hope to be for some time Rant over.
5.
I'm the kinda guy who likes the treble turned down on my hi fi.
I'm like you mate Regards rig eq settings I never switch the tweeter on and roll off all the treble, a kappa 15 would suit me fine . Great result for you mate.
6. I play a bass, people ask me to be in their bands, I must be a bass player
7.
Here's my Precision bass:
Oh my word! I've had a little accident lush!!!
8. Our new band need a vocalist. It's original material, with maybe the occasional cover that takes our fancy. Heavily blues influenced, with rock, alternative, funky, a little psychedelic sometimes. Think Muddy Waters and BB King bump into Led Zepplin and Free, hitch a ride with Neil Young to meet Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and on the way stop off to pick up Pink Floyd and Radiohead...sort of. We're based in North Devon (Torrington to be precise). If you're interested PM me Here's a taster of the bluesy stuff (I'm not actually playing on this one btw ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzzGpU00nn0
9. Sold Steve a set of strings, really quick payment and good communication throughout. No qualms doing a deal with Steve again.
10. Anything you like or feel comfortable playing. You can always change your tone with those knob things on your amp etc etc I play for a prog metal band (sort of). I use my 4 string Ibanez SR or Squier P bass. They also both fit perfectly with the blues rock band I shall going to rehearse with in about 30 mins
11. Not currently. Mainly originals (actually 2 originals bands, beginnings of), although we may do some covers in our own style I stress only some.
12.
Here's the official top 50 cover songs based on the set lists of bands on North West Bands website. http://nwb.co/setlistchart
I notice All right now or Alright Now appears at postions 29 and 25
13. If you go to the Ibanez UK/European website they don't list a 1x10 cab like they do on the US. It would be a bit of a PITA if you couldn't get the matching ext cab to allow you to open up the amp fully. But then again, neither do they list the Soundgear 400 as available in the UK, but I know you can get one, I've played one
14. As none of the stuff I do gets recorded at the moment, I couldn't possibly comment
15.
Marvin, I'm just doing the same job on one of my p basses. So is the wire through the straw with the pup cables and then soldered both ends ?
That's exactly how I did it .
16. Prog Metal/Symphonic Metal band (I'm not quite sure what is, I'm covering all bases there <--- look a pun ), is having a hellish time finding a drummer. Their original drummer was brilliant, creative and like a metronome. I played live with him once, without any rehearsals, and it was so easy to play. I knew exactly where I was in the songs from just listening to him. Unfortunately he left. His replacement was totally inappropriate. I didn't listen to him. He'd play something different every time he played, he never listened to the song or the rest of us, so the rhythm even changed. He's been...moved on.
17. Set of unused D'Addario XL medium gauge (.050, .070, .085, .105) nickel wound strings. They've never been on a bass. I was sent these by mistake by an ebay seller who didn't want them back. £10 inc postage. Cheers Marv
18. Is it the nut width or neck profile/shape that's the issue. I've got an Ibanez SR with a stupidly thin neck, it's got a Jazz nut width but also the profile/shape is very thin i.e there's not a lot of wood between my fingers and my thumb if you get my drift. Conversely, a Rockbass Corvette I owned had the same nut width but had a neck like a baseball bat, which I found nigh on impossible to play, crucified my hand. Now I've got an old Squier P bass and despite it having the wider nut, the shape of the neck makes it very comfortable to play. I've got crap hands btw I've just become a pbass convert so I'm biased.
19.
You sir are a genius.
Thank you, sir
20. Having got into 2 originals bands recently I just don't find covers appealing. That said, a band I depped for a while back did a metal cover of the Cure's Lullaby which was the closest to good fun playing a cover.
21. There's only one use for an isolated track...if you're trying to learn that part and you can't hear it well enough in the mix The band I'm in recorded a jam we had a couple of weeks ago and we could isolate our tracks. As someone who doesn't rate his playing anyway, hearing my bass part on its own made my confidence plumet. In the mix it sounded fine and my band mates thought so to. What ya know
22. Thank you everyone. I finished shielding the pbass this evening and I do believe it's worked. For the 'hole' between the two cavities I cased the wires in a drinking straw and then covered it in copper tape, then pushed it through the hole. A wire connects the two cavities, I improved the ground contact on the bridge and I also grounded the shielding. Belt and braces

A steal?

£30, as TheGreek says, is nothing. If it works you're quids in. Personally I'd probably get a quote on the on/off switch being repaired, but that's just me . Can't imagine it'd be too much tbh
24.
For the wires that go through the hole from pick-up to cavity, I used the outer shielding from this kind of wire: Which I got from here: http://www.wdmusic.c...---1m-283-p.asp I just pulled the its original wire out and fed the pickup wires though it. It can be soldered too, which is handy. A cheap and easy way to shield those wires would be to wrap them in tinfoil and then feed them through the hole. It can't be soldered, but you can stick it down with something like Aluminium Tape, which is what I use to shield the entire cavity.
I've got some of that in my spares bag. Thanks for the pointer, similar to what John (KiOgon) was suggesting I suppose. Cheers
