1. As none of the stuff I do gets recorded at the moment, I couldn't possibly comment
2.
Marvin, I'm just doing the same job on one of my p basses. So is the wire through the straw with the pup cables and then soldered both ends ?
That's exactly how I did it .
3. Prog Metal/Symphonic Metal band (I'm not quite sure what is, I'm covering all bases there <--- look a pun ), is having a hellish time finding a drummer. Their original drummer was brilliant, creative and like a metronome. I played live with him once, without any rehearsals, and it was so easy to play. I knew exactly where I was in the songs from just listening to him. Unfortunately he left. His replacement was totally inappropriate. I didn't listen to him. He'd play something different every time he played, he never listened to the song or the rest of us, so the rhythm even changed. He's been...moved on.
4. Set of unused D'Addario XL medium gauge (.050, .070, .085, .105) nickel wound strings. They've never been on a bass. I was sent these by mistake by an ebay seller who didn't want them back. £10 inc postage. Cheers Marv
5. Is it the nut width or neck profile/shape that's the issue. I've got an Ibanez SR with a stupidly thin neck, it's got a Jazz nut width but also the profile/shape is very thin i.e there's not a lot of wood between my fingers and my thumb if you get my drift. Conversely, a Rockbass Corvette I owned had the same nut width but had a neck like a baseball bat, which I found nigh on impossible to play, crucified my hand. Now I've got an old Squier P bass and despite it having the wider nut, the shape of the neck makes it very comfortable to play. I've got crap hands btw I've just become a pbass convert so I'm biased.
6.
You sir are a genius.
Thank you, sir
7. Having got into 2 originals bands recently I just don't find covers appealing. That said, a band I depped for a while back did a metal cover of the Cure's Lullaby which was the closest to good fun playing a cover.
8. There's only one use for an isolated track...if you're trying to learn that part and you can't hear it well enough in the mix The band I'm in recorded a jam we had a couple of weeks ago and we could isolate our tracks. As someone who doesn't rate his playing anyway, hearing my bass part on its own made my confidence plumet. In the mix it sounded fine and my band mates thought so to. What ya know
9. Thank you everyone. I finished shielding the pbass this evening and I do believe it's worked. For the 'hole' between the two cavities I cased the wires in a drinking straw and then covered it in copper tape, then pushed it through the hole. A wire connects the two cavities, I improved the ground contact on the bridge and I also grounded the shielding. Belt and braces

A steal?

£30, as TheGreek says, is nothing. If it works you're quids in. Personally I'd probably get a quote on the on/off switch being repaired, but that's just me . Can't imagine it'd be too much tbh
11.
For the wires that go through the hole from pick-up to cavity, I used the outer shielding from this kind of wire: Which I got from here: http://www.wdmusic.c...---1m-283-p.asp I just pulled the its original wire out and fed the pickup wires though it. It can be soldered too, which is handy. A cheap and easy way to shield those wires would be to wrap them in tinfoil and then feed them through the hole. It can't be soldered, but you can stick it down with something like Aluminium Tape, which is what I use to shield the entire cavity.
I've got some of that in my spares bag. Thanks for the pointer, similar to what John (KiOgon) was suggesting I suppose. Cheers
12.
Yep, and yep. If you are super confident of your shielding, the string ground should now go to the cavity, not the pot. You'll soon hear if you got it right.
Excuse my ignorance but...what's the string ground?
13. If it all goes 'arse about' Dave I'll be 'round yours
14. I need to shield my P bass. I'm just a little unsure as to the exact wiring re. the grounds after. The pickup and control cavity are seperate, the wires from the pickup to control cavity go through a hole. Do I solder a wire to the shielding of both cavities so they are 'connected'? Also I assume you remove the ground wire from pot to pot and just have one to the bridge from the volume pot? None of this probably makes sense
15.
Whats wrong with listening to the record and figuring it out for yourself? I don't think I've ever used tabs to learn a song and as a dep for function bands I've often had to learn 20 or more in a week! Improves your listening skills no end if you can listen to a tune once or twice and figure it out... One of the guitards I know used to send me tabs for songs all the time, usually I can tell they are wrong within one listen - who writes these things!?
Time, mainly. I used tab loads last year when in a covers band. I don't have the time to work it out by ear, I have the trappings of a full time job, kids etc. Although I can't see how lecturing someone on 'learn yourself by ear' is pertinent to the thread. And surely it's obvious who writes tabs, people who learn songs by ear. Given that most of it's wrong then, learning by ear can't be as accurate as it's cracked up to be.
16. The guitarist in my band bought one of these for £25 for another project he was doing. I've borrowed it a few times. I wasn't overly impressed with the pickup and electrics, but that could easily be replaced, and given the original price What I was impressed with was the general feel of it. The neck in particular I found very easy to play. I'd have one.
17. A ridiculous heavy handed approach to something that really isn't causing the music industry a problem regards lost revenue. If you try looking for official transcripts for bass your choice is severely limited. I personally take a dim view of bands who would support blocking unofficial tab.
18. Theory just describes what your ears are telling you play. Who honestly, when they are playing, thinks "I'm going to play an 11th or 6th now". It just flows on what you know sounds right falling off that fretboard. It should be intuitive because music is an expression of yourself, an art, not numbers, dots and squiggles.
19. I bought an early 90's Korean Squier P bass a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Don't know how well regarded these Korean made P's are but...it certainly does the business.
20.
I do like Cornwall, but didn't like the narrow roads with high hedges too much.
Always considered the A30 a quite decent road tbh
21. I've just bought a Squier P bass and it buzzes if I roll the tone up, it's not noticeable, I think, if you roll the tone off. There's no shielding so I'm assuming some copper tape and grounding wires?
22.
Welcome to the world of a P bass ! I'm glad you like your bass
Thanks
23. After much procrastination I finally took the plunge and decided to buy a P bass to see what they're all about. It's an early 90's Squier and it's +++++++AWESOME+++++++++
24. Cheers guys, I think I'll give Howard a PM if I really want it done Probably will, I've just had a go on that design you bass website thing on another thread and it'll look with a tort pg.
25. I've bought a 90's Korean S series Squier P bass, should get it on Friday. It's black with a white PG. I dislike white on black and would like to put a black or tort one on it. Question then, does anyone know if the ones from say Axerus would fit ie. without drilling any new holes or would I need to look at having one made (which given the fact it's a cheap bass may seem a little ostentatious )? Or is there anywhere which supplies a direct fit? Cheers
