1. These philistines are simply mocking what they ain't got. They simply aren't organised or nice enough to have such a bountiful wealth of knowledge, friendship and arguments as what you find on this 'ere small corner of the internet. I think Skank summed it up perfectly..."f*** 'em"
 2.
Really? On what basis?
Sorry, got it slightly wrong. Not classified as a renewable, but as a low carbon 'green' energy source, thus allowing it acces to R&D monies. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/may/29/gas-rebranded-green-energy-eu?INTCMP=SRCH
 3.
It's not just about the infrastructure. Electric cars will do nothing to alleviate our upcoming energy crisis. The power for electric cars (electricity) is mainly produced by burning fossil fuels. Electric transport only makes sense if the power comes from renewables, which is not happening as (for example) part of the risible government budget for research into renewables is being diverted to subsidise 'fracking' and other harebrained fossil fuel schemes.
...and due to a very successful lobbying by the gas industry the EU has classified natural gas as a renewable energy source so now that industry can get it's hands on R&D monies that was meant for 'legitimate' renewables.
 4. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Ultimately depends on what I'm playing. For example this evening I shall be rehearsing with a prog rock/metal band, so a little bit of dirt and chorus seems to work quite well. In a couple of weeks I've got a rehearsal with a covers band and will just go clean
 5. Much like JTUK, I'd like to find out whether it works first. Then sort out the other business. For me, if I were to meet up with a potential band and there was a list of this that and the other, I'd probably bugger off. Point in case, a drummer I know has been unsubtle about airing the idea of a covers band i.e would I be the bass player. I've jammed with him plenty of times and it's never really jelled for me. However, my biggest sticking point is his 'demand list' of - I want 25% say over the set list, no room for manoeuvre, to which I said that sort of black and white approach wouldn't work. Then there's a lot of - I won't play here, I don't won't to do x or y...come to think of it I wonder why he wants to be in a band . Anyway I'm tooooo busy.
 6. I really don't see watt the fuss is about. /I've already got me coat
 7.
I don't practice bass at all. I rarely play in between gigs or rehearsals at the moment, I haven't for quite a while. I'll have a quick play before a gig sometimes, or if I'm writing a live or preparing for recording. But I do play about an hour or two a day on the flamenco guitar. I'm starting lessons in about three weeks so I'm trying to get the various (very tricky) techniques into passable shape before then. I'm learning more than I ever could on a bass and most of it is highly transferable to the bass anyway.
Isn't that a bit like popping the vacuum around the house before your cleaner turns up ? Just like to add, apart from myself and Mrs Marvin our household does not employ a cleaner.
 8. I've always wanted to play Mustang Sally, but none of the bands I've been in would do it. In fact, when I mentioned the possibility I was the victim of a torrent of abuse
 9. http://www.carvinworld.com/products/BR118-4 http://www.carvinworld.com/products/BR118-8 Apparently these are new. Be interesting to know what they sound like.
 10. I can't be arsed and haven't got the time. I learn the songs I need to and that's about as far as it goes. I don't write anything for the originals band I'm in so don't do any practice oriented that way (especially as I might quit it anyway). And with a full time job and 3 kids...meh!
 11. "...f*** your singer" Brilliant. Don't think the guitarist in my band would be too pleased if I literally did though, afterall he's f***ing the singer. Actually Mrs Marvin wouldn't view it too kindly either
 12.
pubs..?? sharing..? what sort of gigs are these..?
A wild stab in the dark...a gig in a pub where there is more than one band playing that night, hence producing the circumstances where equipment may be shared.
 13.
Bass competitions?
Oh yes, narrowly nudged out Squash to become a new Olympic event. Somebody thought because it had strings on it it was a racket....it is when I play. Boom tish, ba da ba boom
 14. Simply no. Had my gear broken by others in the past, so learnt my lesson.
 15.
Surely coffee and cake is the only way??
Now you see this where the really big, heated arguments begin. It's tea with cake, not coffee as well you know.
 16.
Whilst historically, Mac users have been fairly immune - more on this later - from true virus attacks, I still advocate setting up the inbuilt firewall properly, using a non-admin account, and using anti-virus software like ClamXav - similar to Clamwin. It is just basic good practise. In a nutshell(ish), my advice to Mac users would be: The firewall: Take the time to understand what this does. It can block or allow communication in and out of the computer. For a hacker to gain access in the first place, they have to be able to communicate with the machine. You can cut down on the avenues available for entry by setting the firewall to operate on an application by application basis. For example, you may allow an application that allows you to upload files to a website to have both outgoing and incoming communications open if you use the non-passive upload option rather than passive. In non-passive mode the remote server takes control of the upload process, and requires that it can start the conversation. A word processor, Pages or Word for example should not need any communications, so the default would be to disallow. Little Snitch - http://www.obdev.at/...itch/index.html - offers additional information about applications trying to send data out. Using a non-administrator account: Any significant changes to a machine should be fully authorised. The level of authorisation depends on the type of account you have set up. On a Mac you have three types. A user account, an administrator account and the root account. The user account is the most restrictive and hence the safest - you can't install applications by default for example. Any significant changes such as an installation, require an administrator to enter a username and a password. An administrator account requires just the password - you are already running as an administrator so a username is not required. It is less restrictive in terms of what can be done. The root account is disabled by default on a Mac, although it can be enabled if you know what you are doing. With this account, you are god on the machine and can do anything. That's why it's disabled. Running as a simple user will help to make unauthorised access more difficult. Unfortunately, it cannot prevent it entirely. Most software has flaws. Most will probably be benign, but some will allow a determined hacker to trigger processes beyond the original flawed application. This type of vulnerability is all too common on all platforms, and can render antivirus software, firewalls and restricted accounts useless if carefully exploited. Using an anti-virus application like ClamXav - http://www.clamxav.com/: If you really know what you are doing, and you don't visit any nefarious bits of the web, then running an antivirus application on a Mac may be optional. There are still no true viruses for the Mac out in the wild, although there are a few trojans doing the rounds, and the odd website that triggers some behaviour that may trick a user. I'd probably recommend you run something like ClamXav, as it will also spot malware that works only under Windows, and help prevent you passing it on unwittingly to a Windows user. Let's get this clear. The Mac is not inherently immune from viruses, trojans and other forms of malware. In some regards it is more difficult to construct something that will work, although a good trojan will work on any platform as it tricks the user into running something that's pretending to be something else. If they think they want to run it, they will. I'd be prepared for the probable rise in Macs being targeted - in fact it has already started, albeit at a low level. Active malware counts are still in the handful area, on Windows it's in the hundreds of thousands. There is absolutely no room for complacency or any false sense of superiority though.
Quality post SS. Clamxav is much more user friendly than it used to be. Thank you
 17. I personally found the references to CAKE, the most interesting part of the thread thus far
 18. I've neither the room to store a fridge or the will to move one. I really not fussed how good they sound, no one listens to the bass player anyway
 19.
I offered to play drums for a friend's punk trio but I'd taken my own body weight in shrooms and the best I could manage was drooling a little bit and falling off the stool. Was pretty punk of us to self-destruct before we'd even played a note though.
Sir, I salute you. That is proper, bone fide punk - apart from the drooling, bit more effort needed there to spit . None of this namby pamby radio friendly, career conscious so called punk you get these days.
 20. Cheapest thing you can find. No one listens to the bass player, so no point in wasting good money.

 22.
Check the other posts too, Hank.
Hank?! HANK!?.....HANK!?!?! Well! I'm off to have a blub in the corner. I'm not playing no more.
 23.
SS is close...............
Hmmmm. A 16 year margin.
 24. Excellent! A guessing game. Um...Ooooo,,,,,,,aaaaaahhhh.........well.......um....... yesterday?!
 25.
Detune, and play some cradle of filth or something.
Oh yes, I could put the OP in touch with a former guitarist of CoF
