Guys, I need to say something here. I've added this comment to my original post: IMPORTANT EDIT: Obviously, this is a public forum and I'm already regretting posting my original comments. It's entirely possible that some basschatters will be able to work out who I'm referring to and I certainly do not want to cause any personal embarrassment. I think I've allowed my frustrations to get the better of my judgement. So, I do not intend to make any more comments about the individual because he's a friendly guy who really enjoys his guitar-playing. Somewhat red-faced, I'll go and get me coat.
Do not fear. I've not faintest idea of whom you are referring to The pedal fetish guitarist in my previous band was a nice bloke as well, although he did annoy the singer...and vice versa. Which is why the band split up I suppose...I digress

All the gear no idea! I was in a band with one of these sorts, although he never took 2 hours to set up. Rehearsals just ended up bringing more and more equipment per se - mixing desk, wedge monitors, cd player etc. It's not the number of pedals, effects or whatever that's the problem, it's whether the person who has them knows what they're doing with them. Contrast with the 2 guitarists (in different bands) I play with at the moment. One has nearly no effects, the other has about a dozen pedals. They're both comfortable with they're sound and what they're using and both thoroughly decent sorts.

I'm with BRX and silddx on this. The bands are adding to the event, like the catering and bar, and as such should be recognised accordingly when it comes to being paid. Personally I wouldn't do it because I'm a Republican. I'd gain no joy from working for free to 'celebrate' the day her Maj got to put a gold hat on

Mag 300 with 1 2 x 10 cab enough for pubs and clubs?
Marvin replied to JayPH's topic in Amps and Cabs
I play pub gigs with a 210 combo (350w into 4ohms) and it's plenty loud enough. I wouldn't however buy this head and cab. Firstly they seem a bit mismatched and second you can't add another cab, hence negating the flexibility and purpose of having a head and cab...sort of -
You have to be nice and be willing to play Mustang Sally! I'm neither, btw.
I'm not nice enough to agree to play Mustang Sally
I've seen a lot of bands round here over the years where I reckon none of them were gig-ready. They were still playing though, and the punters seemed to enjoy it enough. Don't worry about it, go and have a go, if you can play root notes along with them (no 3rds, it makes people upset) you'll be fine. There are some god-awful bassists round here getting plenty of regular gigs.
So you were at my last gig . I've just found 3rds, it's when you play a 7th you get a strange look
Yeah but you see Marvin is dead nice. Being nice is way more important than being willing to play Mustang Sally.
It's true, I'm afflicted with Nice Bloke Disease.

Is there really any difference in volume between active & passive?
Marvin replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Mine isn't any louder than my old passive bass was. And the change of batteries is pissing me off and I hate that I cant leave it plugged in. Is there such a thing as an active/passive bass? Such as, when the battery dies switch to passive and rock on?
Hohner B2A's. You can switch the active circuitry off and still keep going. Wicked piece of kit. I only realised recently that my Ibanez SR has passive pick ups and that it's only the EQ that's active. Since I don't use the on board EQ... -
Ed S's post is a good measure. I only started playing a couple of years ago. Since then I've been in a covers band, one scratch covers band that did a small support slot after a couple of rehearsals, depped for an originals band, did a song at an open mic night last week that I've never heard before (ballsed it right up but no one noticed ), am now in an originals band and been asked to join 3 covers bands recently. When I started auditioning I didn't know any classic covers - I still don't know how to play All Right Now, Mustang Sally or any of the usual suspects. All that and I'm sh*t. Sometimes you just have to put yourself out there.
Nick Mason..? Recorded at 78, played back at 33. That old trick worked for ages...
Has Nick Mason ever 'bigged' himself up though. The impression I got when reading his book and the interviews I've seen of him, he always seems to regard himself as a bit average at best.
The neck. Built for speed and sin.
You can't leave it like that! What've ya got man?
You have a hollow neck to get through Customs ???
I've got an Ibanez Soundgear. 3 years old. Love it. Feels right, sounds great. Tried a few others lately and although they're are good basses, nothing wrong with them whatsoever, they just didn't feel right. I might buy another Soundgear

Listened to the outtake in the OP, such a shame that a good drum groove was wasted on such a dog awful song. Probably the reason I've never taken much notice of Bonham is I don't get the adulation of Zepplin, but then I'm not much interested in the adulation of individual players.
So to get back to the topic, I haven't heard his new album, would anyone here recommend it? To a music listener, not a bass player - I don't listen to music just for the bass player.
Weirdo
I don't understand. A modelling amp/re-amp is just like any other amp/pre-amp. You turn the knobs until it sounds good in the band mix. What exactly is the problem?
This. I personally think most people hear what they want to hear. They see a modelling amp and they hear sh*t, they see a half stack and it sounds great...when in fact they both sound the same near as hell. Charic's hit on the head though, most of the crap you hear from a modelling amp is because people don't know how to 'set them up'. I had this problem with a Line6 Lowdown 300. Only when Charic provided me with a few pointers (thanks ) did I start to feel comfortable with the sound I was getting. What did it sound like? Much like my own combo when playing in a band context. I recently saw a band playing live twice, a couple of months apart. In those 2 months they, unknown to me, changed their bass player - I'll be honest I just thought the guy had had a shave...dear o dear . The first time I saw them the bass player had a full stack, a 410 on top a 115, a full sound blah, blah, blah. The second time I saw them, with a new bass player, I spent the first 10 minutes trying to figure out where the bass players rig was. He didn't have one, he was playing through a Line6 Pod, into the desk, straight to the PA and using in ear monitoring. He sounded the same as the previous guy and has the same tone as on the CD I bought that night...which he doesn't play on.
So what they need, as well as a sane CEO, is a decent Quality Engineer, which is where I come in, so Mr Hall, fire your Quality Manager and Quality Engineer, cause' they are clearly crap, and apoint me instead. Go on I dare you. Seriously I have just recently aquired Ricky GAS and was looking for a black one. Needless to say Mr Hall, can now stick it. I've always thought the build quality was crap, but I just fancied one. When you have to spend extra dosh to get a brand new bass put right something is clearly very wrong. Congratulations Mr Hall for shooting yourself in the foot big style.
If you want to save yourself a few quid you're in luck mate. Possibly not the real thing though, WoT's got one for sale and it's black!!! Also, how much does it weigh? Can you make it sound like a P Bass because that's what I'm really after? Can you replace the neck on these because I don't really like the look of that headstock tbh?

Regardless of whether the trademark is enforceable, which it seems it isn't in this case, Rickenbacker seem to have scored a massive own goal here. Pursuing a trademark infringement on a private sale on a bass forum of 20,000 members can only be seen as a massive over reaction. I think we'd all be supportive if Rickenbacker were pursing manufacturers that are presently making copies, but a 30yr old copy and a private sale, no

Auditions - why are some musicians so damned rude to others?
Marvin replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
It seems to be a recurrent theme unfortunately, the rudeness and slack attitude of 'musicians'. I answered an add for a band a couple of weeks ago, met the drummer and guitarist for a beer, arranged a meet up to run through some songs this coming sunday and was told they'd send me a few songs to learn. Nothing so far. I don't even know if it's still on, where it is, or what songs they want to play. At the moment I'm tempted to send them a text on Friday saying forget it. At the other end of the scale is this. I went to an open mic night on Monday and bumped into a guitarist I'd been rehearsing with 18 months ago. I quit after a couple of rehearsals. Got chatting to him and he said the guy that they found to replace me was leaving so they were looking for a bass player. I thought about it, so texted him yesterday saying I'd be interested. He got straight back to me saying they had someone in mind but if that didn't work out he'd be in touch definitely. He's a good guitarist, the rest of the band are solid and tight, they communicate and they don't have egos. Now that's what you want. And yes I was a twat for leaving -
Good job she was wearing dungerees...
Entirely depends on what fabric they're made of Anyway...started on bass, sold bass and did a lot of fishing (I might add not for bass ) and then returned to bass. I still do a bit of fishing. I have never played anything else, which has its disadvantages...quite a lot of them really.

I drive to rehearsals and gigs so drinking is simply not an option, especially as my job involves driving so my licence is my pay cheque. I've only met one person who drank at rehearsals recently and that was the drummer in a former covers band. He was useless when sober and after a couple of bottles of beer it certainly didn't improve matters.

School boy errors at gigs - my worst was last night
Marvin replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Ah now then Rich, I can help you here. What I do is look closely at the pedal to see where it says OUT. I plug the amp into this one. Then cunningly, using the principle of elimination, I calculate that the other one must surely be IN. I plug the bass into this one. Never fails! Though I bet you've never turned up to see a band as a punter... ...to find you're supposed to be playing in that band...
Mrs Marvin just asked "has your pedal got IN and OUT written on it?" I obviously said "uh, yes". To which she replied "you sad twat" -
School boy errors at gigs - my worst was last night
Marvin replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Worst I do, and I do it every time, is mixing up the input and output up on my Zoom pedal. Obviously this results in no sound Thankfully the 'problem' is fully resolved by the time I've actually got to play. And for some reason I like to put the lead from my bass into the headphone socket on my amp...not once has this worked -
Unlucky I have still not heard anything back yet so I have everything crossed now
I wouldn't keep everything crossed for too long, you'll get pins and needles and get frightfully uncomfortable All the best mate.
