How did that happen - "I've got blisters on my fingers "
Marvin replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
Can't help, I've not so far got a blister on my plucking fingers. They never even get slightly tender. I haven't played for 10 days and only picked up my bass tonight for the first time and no issues even after 2 hours. -
Not to throw a spanner in the works but I've never not wanted to own any bass like... ever I'd never discount a bass just because of the way it looks, Sound > Looks (Apart from a ricky which is awful in both departments ) Dan
It's not a spanner in the works mate. It simply boils down to the rest of us being fickle and shallow

Thanks for all the advice and tips. It seems there's more to it than my band mates think there is.
Never my first choice but had a dep ( for a mate ) last night where I would have killed for a drum machine. I spent all night trying to be the drummer, not sure what the drummer was trying to be..!!
Sounds like the drummer I was in a band with 6 months ago
Anything spiky - BC Rich etc... I've got a bit of a soft spot for some of the Jackson stuff (both the basses and the band) but a pointy headstock is my limit.
I borrowed one of those BC Rich things the other day for a practice. Don't try and sit down and play one. Doesn't matter how hard you try, some part of it will dig into your thigh. Damned uncomfortable!

Firstly this is not a 'hate' thread Whenever I look at basses in shops or online I've never given any interest to Musicman or Rics. Neither one appeal to me and I've never even wanted to try one. It may be just aesthetic. The MM just looks a bit big a bulky for my skinny arse frame and I just don't like the looks of the Rics.
I've got a couple of Behringer Biros They're alright for now, until I can afford something better, and they seem to break every time I step on them.
I thought I'd go for trusty and reliable so went for some Peavey Biros. But like with most things Peavey they weigh a bloody tonne. It causes great mirth at work as I walk along slouched to one side trying to counter the weight of my pens stuffed into my shirt pocket. And my back.....
The first amp I ever owned was a Laney just like the one in your photo. I attached castors to the bottom and took it to gigs on the bus. Sounded really awful.
I played through a Laney combo at a practice a few weeks ago, that sounded awful however much I twiddled the eq.

The covers band have come up against the problem of a very unreliable drummer. Various options have been talked about including using backing tracks, pre-recorded live drums and drum machines. The backing tracks we're still looking into and we know someone who might record the drum parts for us. Questions then. Has anyone use a drum machine for use in a covers band, and if so what were your experiences? What are the pitfalls basically I suppose? And what is a good drum machine for the job? There are some fairly inexpensive ones out there. Cheers

Stagefright - who suffers from it and how do you deal with it?
Marvin replied to 4000's topic in General Discussion
Well if you're depping for an originals band and have only had one rehearsal then that'd rank as a pretty tough gig in my books. The first thing to remember is that the rest of the band obviously reckon you have the pre-requisite amount of talent and 'balls' or else they'd have cancelled the gig. The second thing to remember is that nobody has ever been given the death penalty for playing a wrong note. Keep it simple, stay relaxed (easier said than done I know, but at least try ) and be prepared to stick a little run in to get you back to the right note if you get it wrong.

You'll be fine. Just remember, whatever happens you never beat this guy for unpreparedness... and moral support from the band. Have a good one.
Thank you for the support, much appreciated. Gig went well. I even managed to scoff down a plate of steak and chips before our set. Thankfully I prepared more than the guitarist in the vid -
Went OKish I suppose. Local pub that puts music on regularly, 3 bands. I was covering, half a set, in a friend's band (originals) whose bass player left a few weeks ago. We only had one rehearsal, so playing and all things musical it went well. Drummer is very good and made life very easy. Downside. Not very well attended despite being free. Even more alarming after the second support band the place emptied of anyone who was there for the music. We played to a handful of people. Furthermore, the drummer who also played in the support act before us was beginning to feel it towards the end, he'd been playing for 2hours. Just before the last song the guitarist showed a complete lack of tact and professionalism when he turned to the drummer and told him to stop being such a dick and quit with the stupid face pulling. Apparently people could see his 'face pulling'. What people these were I'm not sure because most of the people in the pub were down the far end. Upside. I did get a few quid that near enough paid for the meal the Mrs and I had, in a different pub, whilst the first support act was on. In fact the meal was very nice and the highlight of the evening really
