1. I've always been pleasantly surprised how little/much a Shuker costs. Seems to me you can get a custom bass from Shuker for the price that some of the mass produced guys will charge you. Nice looking pbass btw
2. No I don't regret selling my first bass, it was bloody awful. Westone Spectrum II. It had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
3.
I've just watched the video again a couple more times, not to check out the legs of course, but to see whether the song will grow on me. Unfortunately, it still does nothing for me!
Just turn the volume down to zero and watch it a few more times, for research purposes only of course
4. Mine have arrived. Thank you very much Jason at Rotosound and Mark of...somewhere Cheers
5.
Oh wow, first time i've noticed... The head of my little predator dude is missing! <<<<<<<<<<< must edit!
I'd get onto the people who run the site and complain
6.
Look for someone else. Lessons can mean anything and everything...and it is what you come away with that is important. It doesn't seem this is working on any real level so therefore look for someone else...!!
Totally agree. I gave up on lessons with a tutor as I wasn't getting anything from it. There seemed little point on spending good money on something that didn't seem to get me any further. Unfortunately, bass tutors are rare and good ones are even rarer that and I'm not really in a position to get lessons now
7.
If that's a 50 year old Les Paul, that's a rotten thing to do to it IMHO. S'orrible now.
As a Devonian it's not often I agree with a Cornishman but on this I agree 100%. If it is a 50 year old Les Paul than he's just ruined the instrument. A sock full of sh*t would be too good for him.
8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMZFk9TqX1U&feature=related Saw these guys in a pub (The Thatch, Croyde) just before NYE. Thought they were really bloody good.
9. Ball achingly, sphincter wincingly bad...I can't even describe it as a song. It's just so bad. A drummer muted the idea of forming a band with him and I asked what sort of stuff, he played D'yer Mak'er, I left the room.
10. It's the Lego bass on that other thread?
11. Their hand made strings seem quite reasonable
12.
We're not all so lucky, Marvin
You say that but you haven't seen/heard some of the crap she does want to do I'd quite willingly play it if...it was because I was in Jessie J's band . Otherwise any time I've heard a cover of it it hasn't really worked very well.
13.
What is this strange song of which you all speak?
This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMxX-QOV9tI My covers band doesn't do it and never will. Our singer point blank refuses. Good for her I say.
14.
I use all four fingers, it is easier for me that way. *gets coat*
Quite! One finger per fret. 'Tis it not the way?
15. My Ibanez SR. It's easier to play for longer periods than my Rockbass, weight mainly.
16. Had a play on an MIM this morning and it was OK, seemed very solid, neck was nice and the quality was there. Unfortunately I couldn't spend too long noodling (bloody Mrs Marv phoned, "can you pick me up from..") I'm hoping to borrow a Squier VM PBass from someone for a band practice. Not mad keen on the sound of the Dirnt sig bass I'm afraid J. Mainly the neck. Thanks for the links.
17.
It's not a question of winning or loosing. A cover band exists to play the numbers that an audience want to hear. If, as a musician, you want to be original and creative, "do your own thing" or just improve as a technical player you should be in another kind of band. My solution is to be in both types and not to mix up their purposes.
An originals band in North Devon, somewhat of a rare species. There will be those who tell you otherwise. If you're over 40 it's folk or blues and if it's teenagers they all seem to play metal. The choice is overwhelming.
18. I don't think you have to be doing obscure songs to not have to do the usual suspects. Take 'All Cried Out'. I've not heard any other band around here do that one, and the times we have played it previously it's gone down well. The same with 'Weak', not done by others locally and goes down well. You don't have to be radical to be different.
19. Seriously looking at getting a Pbass and although the merits of both have been discussed infinitum, apart from the headstock logo and being made in different parts of the world, what is the difference between a Mexican Precision and its Squier Vintage Mod counterpart? What is it that makes that near £200 difference? Is the neck different? Can you get a better set up on one? Body wood? Pick ups? General feel? EDIT: One difference I noticed, the MIM comes in different colours, otherwise - http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/productComparison.php?section=basses
20. I've got one. Yes it'll compete with a drummer. Never had mine above 5. Like risingson says it is a little lacking in the lower mids possibly. It's done a few gigs, I used it several months ago in a marquee and it coped perfectly well - sounded quite good there actually.
21.
Yeah, the problem with a set that diverse is, that while there may be "something for everyone" there's going to be a whole lot of songs that aren't for everyone. Identify your strengths, and what type of gigs you hope to do. EDIT: Just had another look at the set. I think anyone would be forgiven for thinking that you had mixed up the set lists of a Rock covers band and a function band.
The points you've raised Steve are unfortunately the ones that we've overlooked. And I think you're entirely right the set list does look like it doesn't know what it wants to be.
22. It's a proposed set list as yet. Some of it's been lifted from a previous band the singer and I were in. As for Black Night T13, I haven't even looked at it yet, as like many of the others. I'm not investing time in learning songs that might not even see the air of a rehearsal. So the common comment is the diversity of the set. I see that as an issue as well, and think it'll be quite difficult to execute convincingly. The bands I see that get the most bookings seem to be the one's that are distinctive, locally to me, such as Dave Vader's band (that he's leaving). Furthermore, the Classic Rock tracks are played by several other bands locally already, so unless we're phenomenally fantastic at playing them, we'll be difficult to distinguish from 'the crowd'. As for whether I like the songs themselves, a few yes, but on the whole not really.
23.
I'm not detecting a pattern here ...
There in lies part of the problem.
24.
All cried out is pretty cool.
I will admit there a couple in there that 'sparkle' and that's one of them.
