I find Ed Sheeran much more annoying.
That's the guy who writes long jingles for LEGO isn't it?
They weren't judging the music, they were judging the story
This sums it all up in a nutshell. If one likes the music then feel free to like it. Muso's and muso journalists in particular have got themselves preoccupied with wanting to find 'authentic artists' whatever that means. All art is authentic and at the same time contrived and all is an indulgence of spare cash, so ultimately uncool.

She's all over the media. Initially loved by the music press but now derided (especially if you read the review of her album in Rolling Stone magazine). At first music journo's seemed to fall for Del Rey because she appeared to come from no where. However, now a little more is known of her she has almost become a hate figure. Much seems to focus on people's believe they have in some way been duped, that her father's money and her record company have bought her success and that she is completely contrived. Regardless of what you think of her music I think they way the music press have turned on her has been ridiculous and hypocritical. Her initial success was borne out of people 'finding' a youtube video of her. And although her father's money may mean she can indulge herself in trying to be a pop star more than most, ultimately you can throw as much money as you want at an artist it doesn't mean people will like them.

All very good, a big thanks to Jason at Rotosound and I suppose Mark The Corvette will be getting restrung
Five sets of RS66LD still going begging... any more takers?
Very generous. Used Rotos a lot so yes definitely interested.

I thought I had an earthing problem with my Rockbass. Was at a rehearsal in a rather 'strange' rehearsal area (that's another story though) and it buzzed continually especially with more treble added. The buzz slightly diminished when I rolled off the treble or touched the strings. Got it home and used it the other night at another rehearsal space, nothing. Odd, very odd.

The late 70s/early 80s disco thread (Chic, EWF etc)
Marvin replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
The music, good, great bass lines. However, we must consider the 'fashion' of the time. It has been my long held opinion that the clothes one had to wear in the 70's and early 80's has scared a generation -
Thanks for the suggestions and links. I've got a meet up with the others I'll see what they think.

I've never been interested in who is playing, don't give a damn to be honest. I'm more interested in what is being played, from the very simple to the highly technical. It perplexes me completely when I see the adulation poured over some 'well known' players when what they are playing is absolute arse. They may be able to play this that and the other, but I really don't give a toss when the song or whatever they are playing makes me want to rip my ears off. It can be technically brilliant and played tastefully, but if it's a sh*te song it may as well be played by someone who can only play root notes. I don't do hero worship
-
It's for covers, we only need the drum part, although it could come in handy for keyboard parts, hmmm I have thought about the drum machine route, I'm fairly certain we could programme an accurate beat. That'll be a separate thread
-
Pretty much as the title says. We're pondering using prerecorded drum backing tracks, mainly for practice at the moment as we're having some problems drummer wise. I can't seem to find just the drums online they all come with bass as well. Help much appreciated.
Bully for them, the song is utter drivel dadrock posturing hoary old bollocks. I`m constantly amazed that bands seem to think they have to play it. It`s 42 years old ffs. Best play something more modern sounding like "The Seige of Mafeking"
I left a band after 4 rehearsals because they insisted on putting it in the set list. Plenty of bands do it and I didn't see the necessity in another one doing it. Come to think of it there are plenty of 'classic covers' I don't know how to play.

What is it with guitarists and 12inch drivers and 4x12 cabs?
Marvin replied to Marvin's topic in Guitar Amplifiers
I must be playing with the wrong guitarists because the four I've regularly played with in recent times are all using combos with two or four 10"s. Anyway, shouldn't this be in General Discussion and not Off Topic?
Sorry, forgot General Discussion had been reclassified from General Bass Discussion. Currently the guitarist I'm playing with has a 2x10 combo, he's just become fixated with with getting a 4x12 cab. It's probably because his combo is on its last legs and anything else sounds better -
Both guitarists I've played with recently have become near obsessive about having combos or cabs with 12inch speakers in them. Why? What is it about a 12inch speaker that is so appealing? Do they need the surface area to push air? That's a rhetorical question by the way And what is it about 4x12's? I see them routinely used in small pubs. Why do they need so many speakers? The guitarist in my former band had 2x12 combo and was continually moaning he couldn't hear himself despite it deafening the rest of us. I told him time and time again he was stood too close to the damned thing, but would he listen, would he hell. My current guitarist, brilliant bloke, very talented, knows when to turn down the volume, very self critical...but has become convinced he needs a 4x12 stack! Our drummer is also a sound engineer and told me his biggest problem doing sound is...guitar amps, they're too loud. Oh, I just give up. Just wanted to get that rambling off my chest

The first 'amp' I played through was a loudspeaker amp for an old record player, here. My best mate and I made up a lead so I could play my bass through it. It was a Hacker amp my Dad bought back in the 60's, only 5w apparently. How the hell I didn't blow the thing apart I don't know. Then I bought a Gorilla practice amp, can't remember the output, rubbish. Followed by an old Warwick 60w combo with a 15inch speaker. Huge thing, looked awful, but grief was it loud. I left it my mates garage where we jammed and one of his brother's mates blew it up for me, nice. That was replaced by a Peavey Basic 60, it was alright. I gave up playing a year after buying the Peavey. When I started again I bought an Ibanez swx35. Good little practice amp, and cracking little thing for jamming with a guitarist, get some nice tones out of it. My gigging amp is a Fender Rumble 350. So bugger all gear really, and a lot of it rubbish
-
I've got one of the 35w Soundwave combos as a practice amp (before they revamped the design, I don't like the look of the new ones, mine looks like this). It's a great little combo, you can get some really nice tones out of it. Shame it's not big enough to gig. I hope Ibanez widen the range in the Promethean range as if that's all they're doing in the catalogue snippit then it's a backward step IMV.
This is my preference, too. I still have or have had Fender Jaguar Fender Power Jazz Bass Special Fender Precision Lyte SGC Nanyo Bass Collection Yamaha RBX800A Peavey Fury II Epiphone T-Bird Pro IV A Frankenfender P-Bass with a J neck All 38mm at the nut and, also, shallow depth. I think the Peavey is actually the skinniest of all those I have tried. Still not tried an Ibanez yet!
Shallow depth is also what I was alluding to. I own a Rockbass Corvette that is 38mm at the nut, so not at all wide. However, the neck is quite deep and chunky to be honest. Hence I would never describe it as skinny.
My Rockinbetter neck is ludicrously skinny, as was an Epi T-bird I owned briefly.
I've never tried a T-bird, I always thought they'd have quite chunky necks. Now I know different I'll have to go and try one
-
The infamous Ibanez Soundgear range aside (which I've got one of ) what other basses have similar skinny fast necks?
-
I have on occasion attempted writing at least part of a song on the bass (I don't play any other instrument). Predictably though it always starts to sound like I've nicked it from something I was playing a few days prior.
-
Do the other members of your 'friends' band notice this problem? Is it a talking point? Does the singer stand in front of the drum kit in almost conductor fashion signalling the beat to the drummer, as my singer has done to a drummer? That was quite funny tbh. I found the drummer in my now defunct band quite impossible when he started going off time - going into a roll at one speed, coming out at another, missing beats, adding beats...... As the least experienced in the band I found it, especially when playing live, a bit of a roller coaster ride. I did on occasion pull him back onto the beat. It always worried me though when he wanted a clear view of my foot tapping to the beat There you go, a post with absolutely no advice in it whatsoever. I'm good at that EDIT: put in a lot of missing words
-
The suggestion came up that we, that is my band, write a few original songs. The aim to begin with was to just play covers but what the hell . I said I'd be up for that. As I don't actually play anything else, bar the fool, I assumed the song writing would come solely from the guitarist. However, the others are keen that I should come up with some ideas. I don't know if this just means a nifty riff to work off or a whole song, probably the former. That aside though, and just as a sort of idle question, has anyone else written songs starting with the bass/on the bass?

New Gig, New Rig hit me with smallish goodish amps
Marvin replied to Dave Vader's topic in Amps and Cabs
Then you must submit to the GAS I didn't go for the Hartke in the end. I've got a Fender Rumble 350 (210). It's good for gigging, just plug it in and away you go, minimal fuss. Not sure the Rumble sound is one you'd be looking for and to be honest with my new band I may be looking to go bigger Unfortunately I haven't seen one of those Ashdowns in the local stores. That place in Barnstaple is almost devoid of anything bass related. Don't think Mansons have got any, they didn't when I popped in a few weeks ago. Have you tried Project Music in Exeter? I found them to be very friendly and helpful when I dropped in there, unfortunately they didn't have anything I wanted to buy at the time Cracking gig you've landed. -
I would just like to state that I have nothing against bagpipes - having some scottish blood in me I actually get quite emotional when I hear them - a strange mixed up feeling of warm sentimentality & wanting to fight somebody. It was the using an "elbow patch for pullovers" bit that made me doubt the seriousness of his post.
