I have on occasion attempted writing at least part of a song on the bass (I don't play any other instrument). Predictably though it always starts to sound like I've nicked it from something I was playing a few days prior.

Do the other members of your 'friends' band notice this problem? Is it a talking point? Does the singer stand in front of the drum kit in almost conductor fashion signalling the beat to the drummer, as my singer has done to a drummer? That was quite funny tbh. I found the drummer in my now defunct band quite impossible when he started going off time - going into a roll at one speed, coming out at another, missing beats, adding beats...... As the least experienced in the band I found it, especially when playing live, a bit of a roller coaster ride. I did on occasion pull him back onto the beat. It always worried me though when he wanted a clear view of my foot tapping to the beat There you go, a post with absolutely no advice in it whatsoever. I'm good at that EDIT: put in a lot of missing words

The suggestion came up that we, that is my band, write a few original songs. The aim to begin with was to just play covers but what the hell . I said I'd be up for that. As I don't actually play anything else, bar the fool, I assumed the song writing would come solely from the guitarist. However, the others are keen that I should come up with some ideas. I don't know if this just means a nifty riff to work off or a whole song, probably the former. That aside though, and just as a sort of idle question, has anyone else written songs starting with the bass/on the bass?

New Gig, New Rig hit me with smallish goodish amps
Marvin replied to Dave Vader's topic in Amps and Cabs
Then you must submit to the GAS I didn't go for the Hartke in the end. I've got a Fender Rumble 350 (210). It's good for gigging, just plug it in and away you go, minimal fuss. Not sure the Rumble sound is one you'd be looking for and to be honest with my new band I may be looking to go bigger Unfortunately I haven't seen one of those Ashdowns in the local stores. That place in Barnstaple is almost devoid of anything bass related. Don't think Mansons have got any, they didn't when I popped in a few weeks ago. Have you tried Project Music in Exeter? I found them to be very friendly and helpful when I dropped in there, unfortunately they didn't have anything I wanted to buy at the time Cracking gig you've landed. -
I would just like to state that I have nothing against bagpipes - having some scottish blood in me I actually get quite emotional when I hear them - a strange mixed up feeling of warm sentimentality & wanting to fight somebody. It was the using an "elbow patch for pullovers" bit that made me doubt the seriousness of his post.
Could you just use one cab with the GK head? Or is this a GAS thing -
have a puncture. Would I be alright to use a simple bicycle puncture repair kit? Or I was possibly thinking, one of those elbow patches for pullovers. All help gratefully received. Thank you.

WoT have I done? New bass arrives this Thursday...
Marvin replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Today is the day. Followers of this thread wait with anticipation to see what it is WoT has bought. -
Really am wondering whether to get one of these in the TLB. Not sure what the band is doing, it's on hold at the moment and doesn't seem to be awakening from its slumber so I don't really need it, but.......

I've got a Rumble 350 and it's a good gigging amp. Used it in pubs with and without PA support and in a marquee last year. Volume never above half way. Tone is good, as long as you don't want to do dub I suppose . The only let down, as you point out, is that you can't add a cab. Then it would be a very loud amp.
It's been discussed plenty on here and decided against, the forum is a hefty size as it is and it would simply dilute the content IMO (it's a Bass site, not a all-emcompassing guitar/music/instrument site) There's nothing to stop you registering a domain and setting up your own forum though Si
This, exactly this, nail on head and similar.

It looks a lot like an SRT800DX. Not sure the pick ups look wide enough though. They're not on the UK Ibanez site, you need to look on the US site. He does play Warwicks apparently, and others. It certainly says he plays a RDB on the marillion website, don't know what they are

Efforts you have made to find right tone
Marvin replied to norvegicusbass's topic in General Discussion
I'm always tweeking my tone tbh. Generally it's remained sort of constant since reading a post by Cetera on here about using mids. However, apart from that general 'rule' I don't seek a specific tone and just try and find something that works. -
Bit unfair Ian! I have one on each of my 6ers. If I'm playing a song that does not use the open strings I use it to mute them all when playing up high. Certain notes creates frequencies that set the other strings ringing. In a wide neck 6, and having little hands, it's almost Impossible to thumb mute all the strings whilst playing up high so this keeps the silence silent so to speak. No solo's. No showing off. And I don't think I'm a w***er. Am I?
I thought it a little 'off' as well. Stuart Clayton certainly isn't a w***er either. Always strikes me as a fairly grounded sort of guy. My drummer used to be in a band with Stuart and he's only ever said what a genuinely nice bloke he is.
With both pickups on, there will be some phase cancellation, usually leading to a more 'scooped' sound. This would cause a drop in output across the mids. Is this what happens? Or is the drop at the bass end? Or both?
Thank you Ian, no drop in bass, well I don't think so. With your description of phase cancellation and a drop in output across the mids, this sounds (ooh a pun ) exactly what is happening. I've never noticed it before, probably because I usually just play with both pick ups on. Thanks again.

I think, and I stress think, I'm getting a slight decrease in volume when using both pick ups on my Ibanez SR300. I can't figure out if it's just a tonal difference or I'm getting a slight spike in volume when I'm just using the neck pick up. The bridge pick up seems less of an issue if at all. Before I consult a luthier and battery change aside, are there any checks I can do or what sort of issue might this be? Cheers

It's very 'in' lately to laud it up about Take That. My wife, who watched this concert, said it made her cringe. This being a women whom wantonly enjoys singing along to Aggadoo if it comes on the radio. I caught the bit where the big human figure was 'travelling' down the runway stage. All looked a bit daft to me and it would have not surprised me one bit to find out Derek Smalls was playing bass that night.

What do you hate about certain basses you own or have owned ?
Marvin replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
I once had a Westone Spectrum 11. It was plainly sh*t, I hated everything about it. The colour, neck, body, pups, bridge, pots, tuners, shape....... -
Whatever fits the band, the song and what you feel comfortable with. My pick playing is very wayward and is something I need to really work on.

Steve Lawson - Why I've Taken My Music Off Spotify
Marvin replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps I read it wrong then. I thought it read that Steve Lawson hoped the major labels would cease to exist not that the labels hoped that Steve cease to exist. Maybe I'm wrong? -
Strange question time. Stage volume vs Speaker config.
Marvin replied to Mog's topic in Amps and Cabs
The angle of dispersion is inversely proportional to the size of the source. That's the #1 reason why midranges are smaller than woofers, and tweeters smaller still. Guitars have most of their frequency content above 1kHz, where the dispersion of a twelve is rapidly collapsing. Worse, when two twelves are placed side by side their dispersion on the horizontal plane falls to that of a twenty-four inch driver. The simple solution is to use eights and tens, not twelves, and stack them vertically, for maximum dispersion on the horizontal plane. But, while most guitarists are acutely aware that their cabs beam, as with the weather they complain about it but no one really does anything about it.
Thank you Bill. -
Absolutely no flexibility with my employer whatsoever. A real pain working saturdays as well. If I were to work through my break all that would happen is I'd get knabbed to still work to the end of my shift. Booking days off is a real nightmare, last week I had to book my leave for next year, up until April 2013, and there is talk of limiting availability. I've recently turned down an audition with an originals rock band because I couldn't commit to the gigs, some too far off and a lot midweek. My employer takes the stance that we shouldn't have outside interests it seems.

Marvin replied to Mog's topic in Amps and Cabs
Bass cabs are omni-directional to about 250Hz, and don't beam much below 1kHz, so they're generally not hard to hear on stage unless cancellation modes mask their output. That's because most of their bandwidth is in the directional frequencies, and if their cabs have drivers placed side by side they're beaming through most of their range. The only solution is to have them in the monitors.
I sort of understand what 'beaming' is. This is a question out of sheer curiosity, how does speaker configuration affect beaming? Or what affect does speaker configuration have on beaming?
