1. There have been a couple of other members bought this combo and said it was quite loud, so it is a little perplexing.
2. The two guitarists I've practised with recently seem to get through leads at a rate of knots.
3. Are any of us ever truly happy? Probably not. Oh sorry, my rig. It's alright. It does what I ask of it. It's loud enough and can get a decent tone. Despite this I'd probably change it because I'm fickle.
4. I dropped into a local Music store yesterday, however, despite being a Hartke stockist they didn't have any Hartke heads. Just wanted to try one really. I suppose it means I'll have to go back another day, what a shame
5.
I think this sums up my view, too. I don't have the wealth of experience that others here have to contribute so, unless I have something in particular or relevant to say, don't just post for the sake of seeing myself on the internet. But I think having a low profile can have it's downside - people seem less inclined to get stuck into a discussion that I try to start or just overlook posts that I make. In a thread recently I added my tuppence-worth, no-one commented. One of the high profile, 'pro' players made much the same observation and it the discussion carried on. Not saying that everyone should have an acknowledgement to every post they make but it does sometimes engender the feeling that there are cliques here. Either that or I need to up my medication
You'll probably find that it was taken on board by a lot more people than you realise. And I wouldn't let a lack of experience hold you back from contributing. I know absolutely* nothing and it's never stopped me *does anyone remember Absolutely when it was on the telly?
6.
My dog has a lead that is nine years old. Does that count?
Maybe, if I'd asked the question in off topic
7. Did a gig on Saturday and the guitarist frowned when, after asking where I got such a shocking blue lead, I told him I bought it 20 years ago in a local music shop. Works perfectly. Anyone else got old leads?
8.
It depends. A ) you get your fill of GAS elsewhere like eBay. B ) you can afford to buy everything new. I'd say C ) you don't get GAS, but that'd be absurd.
No GAS that would be very absurd I must admit to getting dreadful attacks of GAS. Unfortunately my wallet won't extend to fund them. The pitfall of having kids, such is life
9. Last saturday. That's what I look like without that metal suit I wear on Basschat
10. I've sold nothing (had nothing I want to sell) and only bought one bass from BC. Does that make me odd?
11. I wouldn't go for a 410 combo unless you're a Mr Universe type I've got a 210 combo and that's heavy enough - 36kg. Even that makes me want to rush out and buy a lightweight something
12. Dood's sold me on it. Now I just have the hard work of convincing the wife that I need a new rig. Wish me luck.
13. Forgot to add my combo sounded good last night and was ear splittingly loud even at less than half volume. Bit disappointing really as I've been GASing for a new rig and the 'not being loud enough' and 'it's not got the right sound' were the two reasons I was using to convince the house bank I need a entirely different set up. Oh well.
14. Somewhat disappointing gig last night. The songs we played well sounded really good. Everything was helped by not having any PA issues like we had at our first gig. We had a guy on the desk and he set the PA up very well. However, it was blatantly obvious we haven't practised together for the last 7 weeks. Some members of the band don't seem to have practised at all. Half a dozen songs were real car crashes. Also the place was virtually empty which was a little disappointing but not entirely surprising. Generally a bit crap
15. Thanks guys. I'll have a dig around for the older thread.
16. I'm not really in a position to buy one at the moment, but give it a few months I was just wandering what the general consensus was on them.
You're wrecked.
Probably red wine. Good for the heart but does funny stuff to the brain
18. Cool. I'd say his strap was at medium. Are we agreed on that?
19.
You're putting words into his mouth, Marvin. What he is saying IMO is that you should think for yourself and not be a sheep. Self-styled gurus are often not quite what they appear to be. To quote Socrates: To find yourself, think for yourself.
Are you suggesting I'm just a sheep? Questioning, asking why and thinking for myself is something I probably do too much. It takes me literally ages to commit to buy anything as I want to make sure I'm buying what I need at the price I can afford. For example, there are a series of reasons why I've got a Fender Rumble combo that included cost, size, features etc. For gigging and practice I tend to place it on a stand to tilt it back or elevate it so it's not just playing to my ankles. I compromised and bought what was best for me. Unfortunately the detractors, of what is somewhat basic acoustic engineering, put up little in response apart from to say they're talking rubbish because no one else builds cabs like that.
20.
If anyone..typically, a new poster, asks for cab advice they get the stock answer.
Stock repsonse. '.......I'd get yourself a MarkBass cab....'
21.
Tonewoods are a marketing ploy to get you to spend more money.
Philistine! Tonewoods give an instrument a unique 'core tone' and well you know it. I expected much more from you
22.
This. Also, it is written that if you are a chap and unable to play your guitar/bass naked without breaking indecent exposure laws your instrument is either too high or too low to not look like the very thing you should be covering. Especially if you have a Ric or a Thunderbird.
Some might say you're trying to compensate for possible inadequacies by placing your instrument at said height
23.
No.. it is just..and I've seen this in another thread..that certain people are trying to convince you they have invented the wheel which considering some of the people they are up against was laughable in that particular thread, but there you go. What I am saying here is, .. if the build is poor, ( conjecture ) the website is even worse, then why on earth would you jump straight out and assume everything else is just wunnnerful..?? So what we have is a couple of protaganists here who are largely ignored or unknown by the rest of the industry. When you start seeing independant reviews posted ..as opposed to someone who wants to 'review' his latest buy, to a lot of other 'fans', and when you start seeing these sold commercially and in pretty visable places then you might get past forum hype.
You seem to be trying to say that Bill and Alex are peddling snake oil, for want of a better analogy. Neither one, to me, seems to be claiming to have reinvented the wheel. Rather that there are basic principles that are manifestly ignored by the bass cab building industry. There are numerous examples in all industries where basic principles or best practice is ignored in favour of profit margin. Only when the consumer has become informed do manufacturers change. Most purchases will be made on the basis of brand with little or no thought as to the actual spec of a product. 'The industry' can ignore these so called protagonists as they have the marketing budgets to shout louder in order to maintain their profit margins. Just because you can't buy a Barefaced Cab in your local music store is pretty much irrelevant. As an aside, but poignant I think, I've noticed that several major bass cab manufacturers have started to boldly place in their spec list that their cabs are made from baltic birch, and that this is a real selling point for them. Considering that most of these cabs are in excess of £500 to £600 I should hope they were made of Baltic Birch given that the wood would account for probably less than 5% of the final retail cost of the cab. I'm more sceptical about the claims made by manufacturers whose product is design within the parameters given to them by bean counters.
24.
Or....the marketing and suchlike is poor...?? If companies can't get presentation right, then you might wonder about the credence of the rest of the stuff.
I'm afraid you just sound like you're on a wind up. Bill is never going to compete against ready built cabs, they are after all self builds. And, as Bill has already pointed out, Alex builds cabs that the majors can't as there isn't the margin in it for them. I don't see anything wrong with Alex's presentation and the vast majority of the people who have bought his cabs really rate them. But you're right, if it ain't broke why fix it? Unless of course it never worked to start off with.
