Depends what I'm playing! If it's anything technical i have it medium/high. But if i'm blasting out rock and roll on a 4 string it only works if slung low
You're right. It just feels plain wrong to play a punk rock number with the horn almost rubbing your chin.
I like mine at the correct height... which is high shame it looks so silly
Tish tish, it doesn't look silly. My strap is high and I'm as cool as they come Up until recently I was middling, but found this was causing a lot of pain in my fretting hand, I do fret awfully. Hence I'm now on the high side to the point there's little left in the strap to go any higher. It must be said I look very professional.
But, of course, the insinutation is that they'd make a better box. But the only people buying that argument are some people on sites like these. No one else seems to be buying their product. You don't see their kit out in the real world so maybe their argument hasn't reached there..or people don't fancy the product.
I think it's more a matter of cost. To make a box like that of Bill's design is probably not cost effective for mass production. I've had a stab at it (my wood work wasn't up to scratch) and a good friend of mine on here has made one. The actual making of the 'box' is quite involved. Are they better boxes? Well, my friend built a Jack12 and he said it blew the arse off his 4x10. The cabinet design was that efficient. I have no personal experience though. Why don't we get 4x10's stacked vertically? Probably because as consumers we are very conservative and would rather it looked nice rather than worked effectively. Major manufacturers would loose a lot of margin to make cabs like the designs of Bill and Alex. One may like to compare the whole issue to when James Dyson was getting nowhere with his 'cyclone' vacuum cleaner. Now everyone makes one.

Which model of the Ibanez SR series is likely to be the lightest in weight?
Marvin replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
I wouldn't have clue how to get my SR300 to run passive. -
He'd probably be tempted to stick it somewhere else. You have to take Bill's contributions on here with a pinch of salt. One of his (many) regular lines is that Leo Fender didn't know how to design speakers and that guitar drivers should be stacked vertically. But go to his site and look at the guitar cab design that he is flogging for 15 dollars.
To be fair to Bill, the description that goes with that cab on his site is fairly consistent with what he always says. The cab is described as a 'Plan B' so hence I took it to mean a compromise. I always read what Bill and Alex have to say on cab design. Their criticisms seem to be aimed at manufacturers who want their target customer to think they are getting a truly engineered product when it isn't, especially high end gear. Most mass manufactured cabs are simply constructed boxes with drivers in them with little or no acoustic engineering involved in it's design.

Welcome. If you've got GAS this is a very dangerous site

Welcome to the site. Brilliant place where you learn loads and have a good laugh. You'll fit in well as most of us profess to be rubbish I am.
Thanks for your insight & feedback. Im really only after a lightweight bass guitar with p bass passive tone. I guess looking elsewhere is the next step...but where?
To qualify my previous post though, a passive p bass tone is one I've never really been able to capture on the SR. It's an active bass with soapbar pick ups which may be why. -
You mean like this?
I've been practising for the last hour and tipped my 2x10 combo on it's side. It sounds quite different. I'll try it at practice later this week.

You can get pretty much any sound you want out of an SR. My 300 is probably more versatile than the Rockbass Corvette, others may say otherwise but it's just my experience. As for weight, I can only refer to my 300 which is stupidly light. -
Much more so than bass, as their frequency range runs an octave higher. One should not even use a twelve inch driver for best results with guitar, as it will beam above 1.5kHz. Put two side by side and beaming starts around 800Hz, total insanity for a bandwidth that runs to 4 to 5kHz.
My Guitarist's Combo So something like the combo in the link I've provided is a bit off then? If it is I shan't tell my guitarist, he spent a fortune on it.

There was a very old and very used Yamaha bass in the practice room last week. I haven't a clue which model it was due to it's age. It had on split coil pickup, a set of strings that were probably made just after man had discovered how to make steel and was a little abused. Obviously I had to have a go . I was genuinely surprised at how good it sounded and how loud it was. With a decent set and new strings it would have been perfectly playable.

I own a pre-2010 Warwick Rockbass Corvette (as you can see from my sig) I bought s/h and it's a great instrument for the money. It's now my main bass. As silddx said the neck is quite chunky (having come from an Ibanez sr neck which is ultra skinny it was a bit of a change ) but I've got used to it in a matter of days really. At £250 I just wish I was left handed.

That's a real shame Dave. I listened to the single and thought if I could catch a gig I'd drop along. Unfortunately in North Devon there seems to be a ready supply of 'muso's' that are nothing but incompetent but regard themselves as near pro. (For the record I know I'm incompetent ). Musically it's dominated by folk, blues and rock covers band (like what I'm in). Originals bands are few and far between, good original bands are very rare. Just awful isn't it..........

Tah! Played it over a few times just now (even got the Mrs to check, as I thought perhaps I may be going tone deaf) and what I play is spot on. So ignore this please.

Practice last night me guitarist seemed to think I was playing something wrong in this song. Basically that little bridge between the end of the first chorus and the second verse. On the original recording I'm not sure Mr Taylor plays anything at all, but I've got into the habit of playing a C#, E, F#. The guitarist said he was playing D's and A's for that part and that I was wrong. What I play seems to work against the recording I've got. Maybe I should just play nothing. Any pointers any one please?

She is without doubt incredibly talented. But why do all these players travel down the road of music you only ever hear in lifts? It's so predictable.

Having 3 kids in the house, when I've finished playing at home I always have to pack my stuff away. This is probably why the battery in my Ibanez at least has lasted nearly 2 years.
hello, is this bass still available? Any chance of some more details? Weight? Balance? Neck profile? This might suit my new band position perfectly. Thanks Matt P

I believe this was sold to Marvin
Certainly was. It sat not more than 10ft from me now.
Why not buy yourself a good second-hand Fender American Standard precision like this one for £700. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT Sell the neck on for a around £150/200, buy yourself a Mighty Mite Jazz neck for around £80/100, and away you go! Although it would probably be better to keep the neck safely tucked away, in case you decide to sell the bass in the future, as it will be worth more with the original neck. Or you could consider putting one together like this, which I have just completed. Like you, I wanted a P with a J neck, but could not find anything I really liked. Precision Bass with Jazz Neck Squier VM Body £40 Mighty Mite Jazz Neck with maple board £75 Wilkinson Tuners £24 Gotoh 201 Bridge £35 Wizard Thumper Pickup £50 Tortoiseshell pickguard £15 Total £239
That is absolutely stunning, and I don't usually like the 'ashtrays', but that is just lovely. Top work. If you don't mind me being so rude, where did you source the parts?
A very short list. Westone Spectrum II. - truly awful, the mate I sold it to is still trying to get me to by it back after over 10 years. Hohner B2A. - defretted. Really good bass, didn't realise it at the time and sold it for way too little Ibanez SR300 - my weapon now. Brilliant.
To those I should add the Warwick Rockbass Corvette (Active).
