Second hand RB £150, winner.
Can't argue with that I've now got the RB that Wayne had and for the money it's a whole lot of bass. I think it's about 2 years old. It's got the clip top cavity compartment for the electronics, MEC jazz pups, all the hardware has Warwick stamped all over it and it's got that little flip lid thing to access the truss rod. Ok, the parts are probably cheaper than on a full Warwick and the body not as contoured but for £150, crickey!

New I would probably buy an SR500. Or for under £300 you get the SR300. I've had mine for 2 years. However, you may be able to find a Japanese Fender for around that money. You may have to stretch your budget a little.

"Fretless-bass-is-a-cliche-instrument-and-it-should-be-outlawed"
Marvin replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
I don't really know much about him, so I just checked his own website The first line of the Bio is "Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass. Simply put, he is considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world."
Particularly unedifying when someone writes their own bio I was surprised his ego could be condensed down to so few words -

I'm assuming, never having actually listened to a Jeff Berlin/Bob Carolges long player, that his playing isn't all that. I only say this as if he was half decent he wouldn't have to court controversy quite so much. -
Fingerstyle or Pick.. are your fingers the talkers?
Marvin replied to ToneDeluxe's topic in General Discussion
Depends on the song and what sort of sound I want. I'm not very good with a pick but if I'm playing the Greenday track in our set list my fingers just don't get the attacking sound I want for it. -
'oo are you??
What has happened to PhatMonkey? He used to be no.1 didn't he? I've also been plagued by the site hanging randomly. Can't tell you if it's improved I haven't been on for about a week I think.
(Whispering very, very quietly) I once did. Even worse, I've seen Cliff Richard, admittedly with the Shadows. My big sisters made me.
This is certainly a day for revelations. Clarky just told me what the first single he bought was

What is the OP thinking of? It'd be less shameful to say you went to a Gary Glitter concert.
Hi does anyone have the Bass tab to the following, Big Country-look away, Simple minds Love Song,Simple Minds Ghost Dancing & Talking heads Life during wartime. Thanks

I wouldn't take too personally. Bilbo's only got tab for Jazz numbers.

It is a good part that fits the song. However, I'd disagree with Pete that it makes the track. I listened to it through the speakers on my computer and bass line is barely audible, yet it didn't diminish my appreciation of a very well written and performed song. Probably the only people who will consciously listen to the bass part are bass players. Most other listeners are drawn to other parts. Upping the importance of the bass line among bass players may be a symptom of being pretty much ignored in the main.

Thank you to BC'ers for pointing me to John Martyn
Marvin replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Good innit. Also maybe listen to the bass parts Danny Thompson did for Nick Drake around the same time. Danny Thompson and John Martyn apparently, although very good friends, also used to fight like cat and dog at times. They did a rather amusing interview about their relationship. -
I can't be bothered to read this thread but I'm going to comment anyway Last night our singer told me that the bass player in his old band wasn't a patch on me. He said he was good but couldn't do that "slap thing". I only do it on Car Wash and maybe the odd bit thrown in here and there. So no mention of my trying to capture the feel of Bob Babbit on Signed, Sealed, Delivered or the fact that I play I Can't Help Myself with one finger in a desperate but totally unsuccessful attempt to sound a bit like JJ. Or that on the last chorus of Rolling in the Deep I play a really nice high harmony part with the vocals. Or even that during the middle eight to Forget You everybody else takes a back seat and I carry the whole band through it. None of that even registers. But he notices the slap. Make of that what you will but as far as I can see slap is a totally valid technique, no different to pick or fingers and it's also one that non-bass players, or "norms" tend to enjoy. The no-slap argument to me, is as pointless as the no pick argument.
I can't slap at all. But, I popped two notes at practice the other night, during a song, and all of a sudden there was talk of doing Level 42 tracks. They all got thoroughly excited. I soon told them to forget it. I don't bother embellishing songs like Rolling In The Deep. No one notices so can't be arsed. I'd rather have a good old gander around
Not been fishing so caught nowt I'm actually attending an interview next week to enable me to fish this 250 year old estate lake. A good head of 40lb+ carp, very hard apparently but it's a beautiful place and not often fished. I am not allowed to say where it is, but it's not far from me so it's like a Redmire Pool I can fish regularly!
That's stunning, and to have the chance to fish somewhere like that that isn't fished much, just, you lucky man. Sorry I seem to have pulled this off topic
Probably quite unmusical people though aren't they, if that's what they feel they should practice? If they can not understand that technique and facility is rarely valued without a musical element? Most slappers and shredders I have seen on youtube simply can't seem to get past the motor skills element and into the MUSIC.
Quite right. That's the end of that then. Have you been fishing and did you catch awt? EDIT: how do you spell awt? Is awt? Or ought?
When you see bassists who haven't spent hours and hours working on fringe techniques like slapping become successful, are you jealous of them? Players who perhaps don't even practice at all, but they make music that lots of people love. I would imagine it's quite galling if you've dedicated hundreds of hours of diligent practice to techniques that you'll only get to show off on Youtube.
It would appear the answer is probably.
I know you're referring to the question being in English, but your post sounds like a very disparaging remark about Belgians. And yes it seems that most people didn't read the first post.
I rarely read your posts. They're usually twoddle
Loving the finger style at the end.
I was much more impressed with the finger playing than the previous 2 1/2mins. It didn't help the music did nothing for me. I'm coming to the conclusion I don't like slap tone. I like to hear the note, not a string hit a fret which is essentially percussive.
Mmm, I don't see why a bassist should do as she suggests, ie. don't get involved with the dynamics. The more musical and empathic your palette, the more musical you will be. I actually think she's talking a bit of bullshit. You should do what you think is right for the song and work it until it sounds good and wholesome. Nothing wrong with a broad set of musical principles that you you identify with, but what works for the Pixies wouldn't work necessarily elsewhere.
But the whole point of the Pixies and in Deal's case her basslines was to keep it as simple as possible, to resist playing too much. Her bass lines fit the songs and the ethos of the band. You can only take her comments in the context of that song and of the material that the Pixies produced. And to Doddy's point about whether can she only play root crotchet lines, I don't know but I doubt it. The point is, that was how she wanted that line to sound in that song.
It seems a common riposte to those who express a dislike for slap bass in '80s fusion-sounding music is that they're 'jealous'. I don't like that stuff myself, I think it's pretty cheesy, but I don't think I'm jealous of slap bassists. I do wonder if the boot is sometimes on the other foot though? When you see bassists who haven't spent hours and hours working on fringe techniques like slapping become successful, are you jealous of them? Players who perhaps don't even practice at all, but they make music that lots of people love. I would imagine it's quite galling if you've dedicated hundreds of hours of diligent practice to techniques that you'll only get to show off on Youtube. Kim Deal for example. I think the stuff she plays is sublime, but it's obviously not technically hard to do, she's a fine example of taste over technique. Does it piss off the macho slappers to see someone like that playing to audiences of thousands all over the world when the slap players can only get gigs at trade shows?
Kim Deal. You're a man of exquisite taste. And I mean that sincerely. Am I jealous of slappers? No. I just don't bother listening to it much, it doesn't do a lot for me. The occasional slap or pop can add a little spice, but continuous string bashing gets annoying. The bass lines, like the music, I love are those that 'speak' to me. I know sounds rather daft but there you go.

If we're referring to instrument demos only, then I'd agree that there is way too much slap used. That's nothing against slap as a style but if that's all the person doing the demo is going to do it doesn't give you a rounded idea of what the instrument can do. One of my favourite bass players is Andrew Levy, who can certainly lay down a groove but rarely slaps. When he does it adds a little sparkle, which is how I like it.

You don't avoid having a screwdriver in your tool box because you already have a hammer.
You do if you're a carpenter My second bass was defretted, I bought it like it. Very good bass and really nice to play.
