It seems a common riposte to those who express a dislike for slap bass in '80s fusion-sounding music is that they're 'jealous'. I don't like that stuff myself, I think it's pretty cheesy, but I don't think I'm jealous of slap bassists. I do wonder if the boot is sometimes on the other foot though? When you see bassists who haven't spent hours and hours working on fringe techniques like slapping become successful, are you jealous of them? Players who perhaps don't even practice at all, but they make music that lots of people love. I would imagine it's quite galling if you've dedicated hundreds of hours of diligent practice to techniques that you'll only get to show off on Youtube. Kim Deal for example. I think the stuff she plays is sublime, but it's obviously not technically hard to do, she's a fine example of taste over technique. Does it piss off the macho slappers to see someone like that playing to audiences of thousands all over the world when the slap players can only get gigs at trade shows?
Kim Deal. You're a man of exquisite taste. And I mean that sincerely. Am I jealous of slappers? No. I just don't bother listening to it much, it doesn't do a lot for me. The occasional slap or pop can add a little spice, but continuous string bashing gets annoying. The bass lines, like the music, I love are those that 'speak' to me. I know sounds rather daft but there you go.

If we're referring to instrument demos only, then I'd agree that there is way too much slap used. That's nothing against slap as a style but if that's all the person doing the demo is going to do it doesn't give you a rounded idea of what the instrument can do. One of my favourite bass players is Andrew Levy, who can certainly lay down a groove but rarely slaps. When he does it adds a little sparkle, which is how I like it.
Of course - why would you not? You don't avoid having a screwdriver in your tool box because you already have a hammer.
You do if you're a carpenter My second bass was defretted, I bought it like it. Very good bass and really nice to play.
+1 although I think we're just under rock, despite not being very rocky at all. I am plugging post-goth as a genre (not sure if it exists yet)
Must be something to do with living in North Devonia mate. Some of the stuff we play should be under a rock, under lots of rocks, in a hole filled with rocks. I'd trademark the 'post-goth' before some bugger comes along and nicks and makes a fortune.

I don't think I've even touched a Fender but even I can see that's a bitsa, just looks plain wrong.

Don't know what it was, but the guy from the Eels, may have been a short scale as well. Scratch that, must have been a different band, he was playing a black p-bass with a maple neck. Oooops. Nice though DOUBLE EDIT: no, I was right, end of the set he was playing something else. Not overly cool but different which is cool in itself, and what a beard
You've never heard anything by Curve? BTW are you sure that it's Garcia on "This is the House"? He wasn't part of the band for the Sweet Dreams tour...
Great band, loved them. Reminds me that I need to get my copy of Doppleganger back off of someone
Did you notice his techie pressing his pedal buttons for him?
How lazy is that? Wish my guitarist would get someone to push his pedal buttons, might speed our set up a little
Have t say..so far, on another slant....haven't seen a very good set by anyone, U2 were average, for example.. The crowd seem to be into it all though.
Never comes across very well on the tele for me anyway. Although I can't say I'd want to be stood in a muddy field, in the night whilst the sky released 50 million gallons of water on to me
i have an ibanez sr506, happy with the sound, look, feel and weight however the bridge proved to be a real problem. i actualy have 2 in my possesion at the moment and the both fall down the same pit hole. The grub screws sink into the saddles creating clinky noises when fretted. especialy on the A,D and G strings. had to buy a new bridge as the stock ones are seemling awful. theres a few bits and bobs on the net slating the 'nez SR506 bridges. i would imagine its a problem with the stock bridges on the whole SR series although i can only seem to find complaints about the 506 series...
I'm having exactly the same problem with my SR300. It did it at a gig a few weeks ago, half way through the second set I noticed the E string was choking. I'd be interested to find out what bridge you replaced the stock one with. One issue I do have with Ibanez is parts. It took them over 6 weeks to source a battery box/compartment and send it to my local music store. It's a great bass though, sound and playability. But I've bought a Rockbass rather than another Ibanez.

Ever played a bass and regreted not buying it?

No. -
I used to have just one bass but now I have one more.

I sometimes venture up to the 11th fret, but mainly keep to the bottom 7. I wouldn't want to be thought of as extravagant in any way you see.
It's just a sound I hear a lot, and when deciding what would sit well in a track I sometimes think 'hmmm a P would fill this one's ass very well'
Hhhmmmm. My prognosis is, you may simply have GAS -
Nig the truth of it is that as you well know I have a couple of killer basses, I can get an extraordinary range of sounds from the Alembic (I'm still finding them) The main thinking is for the studio when I want an arsenal of sounds, I can get a sound that suits my playing a million times over from all my basses acoustic and electric, I just think that the P would finish the picture and mean that on a session I can supply everything that is required... Don't get me wrong I get a lot of good feedback from engineers and producers about my sound but to pull that last classic bass out would finish it off.
Can I assume, and for once I'm being serious, that you feel a P-Bass is a bit like a blank piece of paper on which you can create what you want. Yes I know that sounds ridiculous but hope you get the drift. -

I thought I wanted a P-Bass and then ended up buying a Warwick Rockbass Corvette Not sure what went on there. I see they've still got this little baby there. What a steel Looks like it just left the factory. -
If it weren't for punk most of the bands I listen to wouldn't be around. Punk did what it needed to, give music a kick up the backside. It did it, we moved on.
Because it would be self indulgent to bother making the distinction?
You're entirely correct
It was a joke, but I guess it fell flat 'cos there's no room for humour in a thread about Jazz.
I was trying to keep it going to take my mind off of the Jazz But you're right, there is no place for humour in serious discussion about Jazz *Marvin frowns knowingly*
