my name is B5 and im a BassChatoholic
You have taken the first step to recovery by admitting your problem. Personally I never spend much time on here I'm far too busy badger farming.
What would be the point? You'd have the skanky Fender rubbish in the way.
How dare you take Mr Delvar's name in vein. -
Thanks. It was more out of hope than anything. I've been looking at a CV P-bass for a while now

Just chucking a thought around. Pondering getting a Precision style bass, but would also like it to be active if I were to get one. Are there any in the budget* price range? *I suppose budget would be around £250

The band I'm with are just getting the set list together so aiming to practice once a week. I only joined 5 weeks ago and we've practiced 4 times so everything is fairly together. I should imagine if the set list is relatively stable then once we're gigging and happy practices may become less frequent.

I'm afraid I wouldn't have a clue what makes his tone, but Brass in Pocket came on the radio yesterday and I too thought what a great sound. Nice bass line as well.
Yep - I've never heard anyone doing a Police cover either, which is odd as they were a big part of 80s/90s music. We're working on Message in a Bottle and Every Little Thing at the moment.
Band I'm with are currently working on Roxanne and Every Breath. I was considering suggesting Spirits in a material world. We did Roxanne for the first time last night at practice. The most difficult part seems to be just timing that first note on the verses. The drummer isn't too sure about the song so everything is a little hesitant.

I don't think not wanting to play certain songs has anything to do with snobbery. It's more to do with not wanting to play/murder/get bored/become suicidal over songs that have plagued clubs and pubs for nearly half a century. From what I saw on NYE's it's only women of a certain age and of a certain alcohol intake that dance to these supposed standards. It's not about wanting to play obscure stuff to 'educate' punters. I left a band after half a dozen practices as they were insistent on playing All Right Now. Why? Have some imagination. Give the audience some credit. Play popular but not obvious. I also think it's somewhat lazy of supposedly self professed 'good musicians' to be playing predictable sets I see a lot of them around my way. One guy around my way thinks he's a great performer and said to me one night "we do All Right Now but give it our own spin". Yeah, he f@cking murders it and it sounds dreadful, because it is a good song unfortunately massacred by 40 years of weekend warriors.

Mrs Marvin has assured me she has a brilliant idea. I do fear however that she will be knitting the prototype.
+1000 to all of these. Bill's designs are fantastic and it's really satisfying. I think Discreet has a brilliant build thread that ended with one of the best looking cabs I've ever seen.
Discreet's build looks fantastic, here it is Jack 12 I tried making a Jack 10 but wasn't happy with it so binned the project. Others said it was fine but I'm a bit of an obsessive and decided to move on. I must be honest although I've done a fair bit of woodwork in the past, bookcases, cupboards and the like, I didn't find the Jack particularly easy due to the angled cuts. I like the look of those fEARFUL cabs. Might have a crack at one of those.
That's blown it Nige
Well said. It's all very unbasschat like as well. Pull yourself together Nigel. -
Dakota. There are some root-note songs that I find enjoyable - She Sells Sanctuary is almost all root but it's full of energy. Rocky Mountain Way is one of those locking in to the drummer songs. But Dakota is just tedious.
Tedious to the point that at a practice just before christmas I played A all the way through the chorus. My mind had drifted so much I forget to play the E.

Perhaps I should buy a new bass that has a pickguard

I was 'moving' the pick around my mouth and nearly choked on it I've now stopped.

Now like many others I use my fingers on some songs and pick on others. But where should I stick my pick? I'm terrible for putting stuff in my pockets and losing it. It usually takes me 5 attempts to find my keys BTW I don't sing so I have no mic stand for the use of. * This is not a serious thread *

As in the title, what is the worst bass line you play in a set or have played in a set? The song itself you might quite like, it could be a favourite but the bass line sucks. Currently still only at the stage of practising, my top contender would be U2's Pride (In the name of love). Bog awful. To me it doesn't even seem to fit the song - perhaps that's just me. Has had me considering 'sawing' my fingers of with a pick whilst playing it. EDIT: not mad keen on the song either but there are other songs in the proposed set I don't like but the bass parts are ok.
