assuming they're the same as the guitar sets (not having any bass sets to hand) it should be : E - brass/gold A - red D - black G - green
I've got D'Addario's on my bass and that is exactly the colour code goes on mine.
It was a rock band that had its faults but it was ok and sounded like a rock band. It was rehearsed and it was tight (I was 17, the rest of the band were 30+). We did a Radio One session three months later so it couldn't have been that bad. Seriously, though. Check this out and tell me I am wrong. The piano solo at 1.00 is a doozy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnrhE5ARc_w...feature=related This is even better... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2fl1_kqsas&NR=1
Crumbs, that's just bad.

A lot of good posts on here. I suppose, picking up of what Derren posted, the point is distinguishing between those who want to take risks but learn from them and those who think they have talent when in fact they aren't. The danger is excluding those with potential. To some extent Doddy has a very valid point. Take for example Susan Boyle (or not ), the general public believe she's an absolute gem of a singer. Talk to any pro singer and they'll say she has a good voice but nothing out of the ordinary. And Bilbo, your point about covers bands etc. I was only discussing this with a singer this morning. We have a free gig in our town in a couple of weeks. There are only 3 bands booked so far and all 3 do covers. She even admitted that doing covers herself wasn't a good thing and will chuck in some of her original material. As she said if all the bands are covers bands, you may as well just book one and they could do the whole evening. But covers and tributes are safe for venues, they seem less willing to take risks on original bands. And audiences don't seem to want to take the risk. I fear we live in a very backward looking world, the past was always better so let's just listen to that.
They probably want a full house of people with enough money to pay theatre prices and buy theatre price drinks in the interval. Don't get that with random pub covers bands and orginals. or do you mean they should book a more varied selection of tribute bands?
Yes, your right. The theatre are probably looking to fill the venue on acts they know will do so rather than taking a punt on originals. The tribute acts themselves are fairly varied. It's also compounded by the fact that it seems anything west of Bristol seems to be a no mans land for most bands.
Shushun frmmnt ssereo , pithic funch :snob:
Are you learning a new foreign language?
Maybe i'm just tight-fisted though!
No cautious and or sensible. I would, I were inclined to consider a boutique bass, look at this option.
- life's too short for [s]bad[/s] jazz.....
Fixed. It's an open goal and he scores, the crowd go wild. Sorry Bilbo far too tempting, I did last a whole 9 minutes.
Oh really? What's your connection with NZ?
Perhaps Mr Pratt has become transfixed with the hynogoat and is on his way to find it.
Hey Paul! Yeah, I'm still here. Yes, Marvin is indeed my bass brother. We never did start that 31 club did we? Ok, I'm not tryin' to hijack the thread. Just sayin' hello! Craig
It's definitely something we should get on to and organise. All the best.

My children were playing with Micheal Caines' children (that's the chef - Caines, not the actor Caine) at a fun park this afternoon. I did not speak or attempt to embarrass myself in front of Mr Caines.
NNNOOOO!!!! please nooooo!!! Think of the children!!!
Good point. But on a serious point, if a guitarist can't play it properly, then they should leave well alone. Unless of course, as per the Lea Roberts example, the band are giving a completely different take, then it's a whole different thing.

The live music at the main theatre near me, is almost entirely dominated by tribute acts. I'm not against tribute acts, all a good mix, my criticism would be of the theatre for not varying the acts they book.

Nice intro, welcome to the forum. Was silddx wearing gloves when you met him?

I've only heard good things about these little amps from the people who have bought them on BC. Ibanez seem to have really come up trumps. Great clip WoT.
Sacrilege Sir, If the guitarist cannot manage to get a "big or dirty" sound and has nothing but a "thin and weedy" sound, I personally would not attempt to play the song. The guitar riff is fairly simple, made up of an A chord with an inverted D chord plus getting the right feel.
I entirely agree with you. And I feel it is our duty, if you see a bass player playing through the verse of Alright Now, to go up to him or her and a) give them a stern glare, b ) if this fails a word in the ear and c) if all else fails a slap around the chops.
-
One, because that's all I have I'd like to have a back-up bass in the rare event that a string goes mid-set, and if I ever get into fretless then that's potentially a third bass - but then that's just being greedy!
I'll join your club, I've only got one bass as well.
-
A fabulous song that always goes down well. I have seen some bass players in bands absolutely destroy this classic by playing their bass over the guitar riffs in the verses, really naff. The bass only comes in on the chorus and during the guitar solo, it gives you time to have a sip of drink during the verses.
Idiots! Surely as a bass player the bonus of playing Alright Now is to have a break whilst not having an official break. As you say, have a quick drink and maybe rest those fingers.
-
Couldn't agree more with the above! I have heard lots of versions of Alright now, the bass line is often varied.
Very true. Even if you look at the clips of Andy Fraser miming he doesn't mime what the record is playing
Playing at my slide-player's 50th birthday bash two weeks ago. He looks like this: So just for that evening, I looked like this:
Going for the Deborah Harry look.
Same here with Chrome, no problems at all. Chrome does however struggle with embedded Flash, especially movies. Were they pages with youtube vids ?
Opera seems to suffer the same. Had it crash a couple of times. Could I ask that with your new avatar Mr Machines we don't post too close together. My avatar gets awfully frisky this time of year and all hell could break loose. Ta.
I can't think of anything to say. Have fun in NZ Guy. Does Craig Martini still post here? Can we have an exclusive famous bass player forum that the rest of us are not allowed in? Or we could start threads about as many famous bass players as possible and see how many turn up? I still bore the wife silly about the fact that the bloke off Sky News emailed me.
Craig Martini was born on exactly the same day as me. We are bass twins he got all the talent though. I bore my wife silly with that

I asked Guy Pratt a question on an online discussion forum. It was a stupid question but a question none the less.

*think of something cool or at least not stupid to say Marvin* Do you fancy a pint at the BC Arms? It's in Off Topic I'll get the first one in. *pillock Marvin, chance to ask a quality question and you balls it right up!*
