Sunshine Of Your Love.
Mine too, I can't stand the song anymore, played it to death.
Waterfront - Simple Minds One note, repeated
Which note? I'm too lazy to figure it out for myself. EDIT: In actual fact forget it, it's probably too complicated for me and I'd just f@ck it up.
If you get any pain in your hands or wrists, stop immediately and rest. Otherwise you risk making something acute into something chronic.
Absolutely agree with silddx. At my first lesson last week my tutor pointed out that I don't always use the best or most appropriate part of my finger to fret a note (I think he was being diplomatic and was basically say 'you're doing it all wrong ars3hole'). In changing my hand shape, only slightly to get a better fretting finger, I encountered a pain shooting up from my wrist to my thumb, I stopped playing for 3 days. I've since adapted my hand shape slightly again and the pain hasn't returned. As with anything, playing an instrument or playing sport, if you encounter pain it's for a reason, it's your body telling you to stop. Stretching, exercises, supplements and changes to technique can or may help but can take time. In the mean time if it hurts step away from your instrument. Lecture over

My first bass a Westone Spectrum 11. Just awful in every respect, quality, tone, playability, I could go on and on. Early 90's cheap basses that come nowhere near the budget end basses today. I think Crazy Kiwi mentioned he had one and would probably support my view.
not a bad bassist, wrote some good songs but very dodgy shorts! You wouldn't see macca in such a pair!
TBH though the entire bad weren't renowned for their sense of style in the clothing department.
Nope, just in general really. I don't think he's a nob... that's just a nod to the 'War and Peace' effort the Macca thread is becoming! I think he is a solid, extremely capable bassist who is comparable in style to Macca i.e. he is melodic and plays to the songs needs rather than his own. He also wrote one of the most recognisable basslines ever in 'Another One Bites The Dust'. He seems a fairly ordinary chap and pretty decent along with it, plus he once played a Buzzard (even though it was a Warwick!) I think he kept his dignity by not rejoining what was obviously not Queen and going out on the road with them. John gets a wacky, Macca thumbs aloft from me!
But if I'm to be serious, I'll go along with the general sentiment of this post. Used to be a Queen fan and although I can't say he was ever a particular influence on me I'm certainly not going to diss his playing or character. Solid bloke doing what a bass player is there to do (when I find out what that actually is I'll complete this post properly).

He doesn't even deserve to lick the strings of Tony Goggle's bass, that's for certain.

My bass tutor's strap for his bass used to belong to Pino Palladino. He (bass tutor) used to house share with a guy who used to drum with Mr Palladino and said drummer had no need for the strap the he had come by. I can see why Pino discarded it though, it fell apart this evening. Now if that's not tenuous, well......

Welcome to basschat. EB-3's are on my GAS list.
Sorry guys, I must have been mad to put this up. Got home, plugged it in and it was just like coming home. And plugging it in. It's a keeper. I've had to move a lot of stuff on recently - the workhorse Fender P, a natural J (R/N neck) and an old Commer van we used to shift the &peg rig. So, regretfully, I'm going to have to withdraw the . Thanks for all the PM's
Only just noticed the thread. Damn shame I've been looking for one for a while now and yours looks to be in perfect condition. Early withdrawal is always a little disappointing, never mind.
2nd time around with a price of £225. I can buy a new one for about that. Bargain.
All these people saying Macca's a bell-end as if they have to work with him. Obviously I haven't either, but I know a man who has who can't praise him enough. He has endless tales of Paul rolling his sleeves up and getting involved, never ever mentioning his wealth and giving to charity on an epic scale. For somebody to live through what he has without any semblance of precedent would put any personality to the test, and you could argue that only George got close to being truly humble about it all. Musicians as a breed are proud of what we do or we wouldn't put ourselves in the position to communicate our ideas to an audience in the first place. Paul is quite rightly proud of his accomplishments and a lesser man would be even more boastful or whatever characteristic you wish to choose to describe him. If I had played bass in the Beatles I'd probably find it a little tricky not to mention it once in a while. Musically I believe the word to describe his playing is eloquent. Always the right turn of phrase at the right time. One of the few bass players the average punter will do "air bass" to when he drops a fill in- I'm thinking "With a little help from my friends". I can't believe there's 7 pages of this stuff and I don't believe anyone's mentioned him playing and singing at the same time. There's a video from the Magical Mystery Tour period where you can see him miming away admittedly but the bass line is bang on. I must remember the song. The earlier stuff maybe more simplistic but he rips through it. And as to all this business about Entwistle and Jamerson. McCartney was doing a very different job for those songs. Most of us have played in more than one band and know that you just can't always do your thing. It's back to the right thing at the right time. The Beatles were about the lyrics, the melodies and the textures. Paul did what he needed to and considering the variety of material demonstrated an imagination way beyond what most other musicians are capable of to suit. Entwistle was effectively the lead guitarist in his band and Jamerson developed a niche for another equally fantastic way of playing, again very specific for the audience. I'm staggered that so called musicians can't recognise what McCartney has achieved, especially as in many ways he has defined commercial bass playing.
I was going to write a post but I think you've pretty much covered it for me, a cracking post. McCartney was a big influence on me when I first picked up the bass, not so much now but you can't deny his influence.

The one I've got, I'm too skint to buy another or replace it.
Well I'm proud to say that I don't know how to play any of the bass lines suggested, except for "All Right Now" and that's only because one of the bands I'm in at the moment do it.
I don't enough know that one, in part because I'd probably refuse to play it there seems little point. Free made 7 albums and all people play is All Right Now and Wishing Well. I purposely learnt Walk in My Shadow, Ride on a Pony, Heartbreaker and one other that I can't remember the name of just to be bl00dy awkward. BTW, the new tracks on MySpace, more cracking stuff.
Well, try it but if I don't like it you'll have to change it I like the body shape looks the business. The black one on this thread looks like the neck doesn't go very far into the body or am I not looking at it correctly? I must admit to preferring minimal and or sleek design or industrial. Nice review of the Rockbass always wondered what they were like.

Wait til you see it, I have a god-like vision Anyway, Adam has started the body, making it from 47mm Seraya Mahogany. He reckons it should be ready in a week or so!
I refer the honourable member to the post I made some....time ago. Best of, and all that, I actually await with eagerness now your man has said slab of timber. (must stop watching Jeeves and Wooster).
You really know how to scare off a beginner, Bilbo! You are also ignoring the fun bit that - when learning - it really reinforces your enthuiasm to be able to play along to music you really like or appreciate. Learning scales may make you a better musician but it ain't fun, in isolation
A most excellent post Clarky, I need not add any more.

What do you "expect" from life as a musician?
Marvin replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I was talking to a bloke this morning who played two sets (one Friday and one Saturday) at a vintage car or steam rally, can't remember which. On the Friday he played for 6hrs and on the Saturday for 8hrs. He was still buzzing this morning, the gig went so well, and he simply couldn't stop smiling. A little bit of that would do me. -

After having a lesson on Tuesday, my strap length has gone a little higher so I now also play with the bass in the same position sat down or stood up. Also, the tutor pointed out my fingering on my fretting hand was not all it could be. Unfortunately changing is proving a little difficult and I can only play for about 15mins at a go at the moment as it stretches my fingers a lot (old habits die hard). There is no way I could get a decent technique with a low strap. Overall then a pointless thread.
Just occasionally, visiting BC is a rather depressing experience!
I wouldn't go to off topic then. And your right unfortunately, sometimes it seems to have as my mum would say 'a funny five minutes' (although I'm sure lots of other people say that as well, I'm not saying she coined or anything).

Not for me that one. I'm not too far from Mansons either and I've got to say I've never been in there. I've checked out the prices online and had to go and sit down with a cuppa.

It's definitely coming from the body, and I think Clarky is right, it may even be something in the battery compartment. TBH I think I'm probably the only one who notices it I've checked for bees and none were found SP thanks for the suggestion.

Just got home, and no it can't be the truss rod, your right it must be a spring or other small part in the body as that's where it's coming from. TBH it's barely audible and it's just me wanting everything perfect. New rule, don't play acoustically at 11pm when you can hear a pin drop Thanks mate, put my mind to rest. Cheers
